They said it couldnt be done. First, they said Donald Trump would never actually run for president, and then he officially announced his run for president. They said his comments about Mexican rapists would sink him before he got started, and Trump promptly rocketed to the top of the polls. Then, they said his attack on Sen. John McCains (R-AZ) war heroism would definitely derail the Trump train, and yet he remains at the top of all the national polls, is a close second in Iowa, and has a huge lead in New Hampshire.
Republican strategists are consoling themselves by alternately insisting that Trump will exit the race when he loses in Iowa (where hes currently almost in the lead), and that his stands on issues will trip him up once the debates begin. Even with Trump so clearly in the lead, the media have the nerve to fret about a Trump third-party run. The day will come when theyll be begging Jeb Bush to mount a third-party run against Trump.
What theyre all missing is that Trump is immune to all of the things they think will take him out. As Andrew Kirell noted not long ago, Donald Trump is adept at explaining away his past positions, and at avoiding some of his current ones. For example, even with all of his focus on illegal immigration, he has been studiously silent about a pathway to citizenship. Trumps appeal has little to do with substance, and everything to do with style, and to date, the assumption has been that theres a limit to how far that can take him. People forget how far it took him in 2011, and what it took to stop him then.
In April of that year, Trump was riding high in the polls, and had yet to even announce a candidacy. He dominated the media for months, but put most of his eggs into the Obama Birther basket. It was only by publicly humiliating Trump over the birth certificate while sending SEAL Team Six to kill Osama bin Laden that President Barack Obama was able to stop Trumps momentum. This time, Trump has diversified, and none of his current targets have a hidden birth certificate or special ops strike up their sleeves. Trump insulted Jeb Bushs wife, and Bush was like, Haha, okay, knock it off, Biff. Over the weekend, when it was reported that a fundraiser for Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker called Trump DumbDumb in a fundraising email, Trump went to town on Walker:
Finally, I can attack! Finally! Finally!
(VIDEO-AT-LINK)
If you thought Trump relished that opportunity, wait until the primetime debate on Fox News next week. Anyone who thinks that Chris Christie or Rick Perry are going to put a dent in Trump needs to have their head examined. Christie will join Trump in slaughtering Bush and Walker, and Perry will try to land a scripted attack, and get knocked on his ass. The only Republican who has the chops to damage Trump is Rick Santorum, maybe, and he probably wont be there.
The current theory is that as the field narrows, Trump will hit his ceiling, but when your lesser-polling candidates start dropping out, is their support going to go to candidates who cant stand up to the guy whos not even supposed to have a chance? Even if they disagree with Trump on the issues, Republican voters arent going to vote for a wuss. As long as he continues to get the privilege of busting these guys up in debates, and enjoying non-stop free publicity, Trump will continue to gain support.
Liberals and Democrats, meanwhile, are laughing all the way to the Whole Foods at the prospect of a Trump general election candidacy, but if you accept the possibility of a Trump nomination, then you dismiss his general election chances at your peril. Assuming that Hillary Clinton is the nominee (which she will be), Trump will head into the general election with the same attack-dog skills and media attention that he had in the primaries, but with the additional benefit of a clean slate on the issues. While the Clinton-hating media continues to attack Hillary with stories that dont actually add up, dont be surprised to see Trump outflank Hillary by, say, proposing instant citizenship to go along with his Mexican-proof fence. Once hes got the GOP nod, The Donald can freestyle on the issues like its 8 Mile Road up in here.
While Trump is busy collecting Republican voters, who will turn out no matter what in order to defeat Hillary Clinton, Hillary will be turning out the Obama coalition that helped President Obama win twice, but might not be turning out the bitterly defeated Sanders/Warren wing. Then, your election will be decided by the handful of soft-headed independents who always decide things, and who are relentlessly being told that they cant trust Hillary Clinton. Before you know it, theres a CBO report on just how much it will cost to gold-plate the White House.
People are starved for a politician that speaks the truth and follows through. The trouble seems to be the “follows through” part.
First - What sane person would want Trump as President?
Not unless Santorum tosses tampons at Trump.
Yeah.. Santorum is bad-ass..
All one has to do is visit the DUmmies web site, and realize quickly, they are scared of Trump as much or more than the GOPe. If Trump is who they want, why are they denigrating Trump the most?
Or knits him a “Make America Great Again!” sweater vest...
Sorry, I don’t trust the Don as any kind of conservative. He talks tough on immigration and he is lately giving lip service to the Second Amendment, but I’m pretty sure that underneath these calculated appeals to his perception of the base he is just another big government statist beholden to his cronies.
Obviously, from your question, not you.

McCain and the cowardly, do-nothing Republicans
Sen. John McCain is a war hero, despite many remaining questions about whether he broke and passed classified military to the North Vietnamese during his confinement in prison at the Hanoi Hilton during the Vietnam War. At the time, McCains father was the admiral in charge of the Navys Seventh Fleet in Asia, and he was a valued war prize for then Vietnamese leader Ho Chin Minh. McCain was beaten and left disabled during his captivity by his inhuman captors.
Years ago when I was chairman and general counsel of Judicial Watch, in the late 90s, before I ran for the U.S. Senate in Florida and before I founded Freedom Watch, I met with McCain in his Senate office. I was flattered that of all the senators serving during the criminally minded Clinton administration, he was the only one who had reached out and seemed to take a personal interest in the work I was doing at Judicial Watch. Most importantly, we had just uncovered perhaps the biggest scandal in American history: the sale of government access, services and classified information to the Communist Chinese by Bill and Hillary Clinton, much akin to what the Bonnie and Clyde of American politics did with Iran in furtherance of their RICO criminal enterprise while Hill was secretary of state under the Obama administration.
After I waited for about 10 minutes in his Senate office lobby, McCain emerged with a smile and held out his crippled right hand to warmly greet me by saying, I feel that I already know you, Larry, from television. Following him into his office and sitting on his leather couch, I showed him a menu prepared and distributed by the Democratic National Committee on behalf of the Clintons, promising all kinds of goodies including the sale of seats on Clinton Commerce Department trade missions, judgeships, commissionerships, overnight stays in the Lincoln Bedroom of the White House and other perks all in exchange of an illegal $100,000 contribution to the DNC for upcoming Democratic election campaigns, including Slick Willys re-election campaign in 1996.
When I showed McCain the DNCs menu, he replied quickly, This is terrible, but you know, Larry, some of my fellow Republicans do similar things. Hearing what seemed to be an honest response, I gained a lot of respect for the senator, particularly since he promised to use his office to help us investigate the Clintons criminal deeds. But following the meeting, and after many calls to him and his aides, McCain did nothing to follow through. I realized that my visit to his chambers was more intended to mollify me particularly since I had been critical of Republican inaction toward the Clintons than any real desire to rid the nation of these co-felons. After all, as McCain had admitted, his own party had less than clean hands.
And this proved to be the case during the ensuing campaign finance hearings that resulted from my work at Judicial Watch. Dubbed the Chinagate Committee, the Republican head of the joint committee investigating illegal Clinton and DNC misconduct, Sen. Fred Thompson, along with McCain, took a dive and shut the hearing down when it was revealed by the Democrats that the Republican National Committee (RNC) had also been dealing with the Communist Chinese, although hardly to the extent of the Clintons and their DNC. McCain and the rest of his Republican colleagues rushed to shut down the investigation and instead moved to pass the now infamous McCain-Feingold bill, which unconstitutionally claimed to solve the problem of illegal campaign contributions from foreign and domestic contributors. The legislation, which was later largely invalidated by the Supreme Court, was like saying to an unpunished O.J. Simpson that a new law prevented him from killing again.
Indeed, the GOPs complicit cover-up of the Chinagate scandal has become the norm with Republicans ever since. Particularly during the Hussein Obama regime one that favors Muslim and Arab interests over those of ordinary Americans of Judeo-Christian heritage McCain and his blowhard establishment allies in the Republican Party have feasted off of their thousands of appearances furthering only their political aspirations on Fox News, but in practice have embarrassingly lost every battle with the Mullah in Chief. Frightened that they will be branded as racists against African-Americans and Muslims, they have rolled over to this evil emperor at nearly every turn. Only one Republican senator has called out his colleagues on their disgraceful and cowardly conduct: Sen. Ted Cruz, much to his credit.
Now, thanks to the likes of Sens. McCain, Bob Corker and their Republican colleagues, we face the imminent approval of Obamas nuclear deal with Iran. Having again caved into King Hussein, they agreed, along with Democrats on the Hill, to perverting the constitutional requirement that a treaty be approved by two-thirds of the Senate. Instead, two-thirds of both houses of Congress are required to shoot down the treaty. Given the gravity of this Neville Chamberlain style appeasement with the mullahs, whereby they certainly will complete their march to atomic weapons with the ballistic missile means to deliver them, this McCain and company sellout of our Constitution is unforgivable.
McCain may have been a war hero in the 70s, but ever since, he has been simply a hypocritical do-nothing blowhard. Donald Trump might have used flippant phraseology to criticize McCain for his lack of courage in not confronting illegal immigration and reacted to McCains comments of calling Trump supporters crazies, but McCain and his Republican establishment political colleagues have ill-served this nation and furthered Hussein Obamas socialist-racist Muslim agenda at nearly every turn.

2008-2010
First they said they couldnt do anything because they didnt have the Presidency, House or Senate.
2010-2014
Then they said they couldnt do anything because Harry Reid was blocking everything in the Senate.
2014-2016
Then they said they couldnt do anything until the 2016 elections because Obama would veto.
2016-2018
Now they are saying they wont be able to do anything even with a Republican President because too many Senate seats are up for grabs in 2018.
There it is again. Today's talking point.
Donald Derangement Syndrome Symptom #23. Thinking that accusing Donald of having no substance will dissuade his supporters who very much like the substance Trump is espousing.
How about we nominate a conservative instead
Trump is plenty conservative for me on these issues:
1. Illegals
2. Military
3. Veterans
4. Foreign trade (biggest factor in lack of jobs here)
5. Obamacare
6. Balanced budgets
7. Iran
8. ISIS
9. Infra structure
Time for you to read some of the books written by Trump and learn facts first hand.
I have read a lot about Donald Trump, a big time lover of Bill Clinton, big corporate crony, supporter of Kelo and a guy who never shuts up.
Tissue-thin is too big a compliment
Exactly, that is the problem. You have read PLENTY OF BOOKS ABOUT TRUMP, written by his detractors. You will learn more about Trump by reading books WRITTEN BY HIM, not others.
If only Donald could get over his shyness and introversion and say what he means. :):)
Have read three so far. They were great.
The Koo Koo birds will all be joining in! :)
