Ted Cruz's team stands by campaign aide who compared Confederate flag removal to a 'Stalinist purge'

Lee Bright, a local lawmaker who is serving as the South Carolina co-chair for the presidential campaign of Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), compared the calls to remove the Confederate flag from the capitol building in his home state to a "Stalinist purge." According to a spokesperson for Cruz, those comments don't conflict with the candidate's position on the issue.

"What Senator Cruz has said is that this is an issue for the state of South Carolina and South Carolinians to sort out and I think that's what you're watching happen," Cruz campaign spokesman Rick Tyler said in a conversation with Business Insider on Tuesday evening.

The shooting at a historically black church in Charleston, South Carolina that left nine people dead on June 17 has reignited a nationwide debate over the flag. The alleged shooter, Dylann Roof, has been linked to a website that featured Confederate imagery and a racist manifesto. This prompted South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) to call for the flag to be removed from the capitol on Monday....

The next Logical Step is to have the Department of Re-Education “delete” any Reference of the Civil War from the History Books.

After that, they can dig up all the Bodies of Confederate Soldiers and Cremate them inside the all the Coal Fired Plans that Obama shut down.

They can Dynamite all the Confederate War Memorials like ISIS is doing to Historical Landmarks in Iraq.

Liberals, ISIS without the Weaponry.

He should’ve demanded Democrats apologize for putting confederate symbols on state property. Make democrats own their confederate heritage.

We should demand an apology from Dems for having a KKK leader in their Senate Caucus only 5 years ago. Did Robert Byrd wear his sheets to Democratic caucus meetings?

Since the governor of SC knuckled under so quickly

Don't get mad at Haley, or even Graham and Scott.

Mitt Romney, the RNC, and other puke national Republicans got the ball rolling and forced this crap.

Had they butted out, Haley would have simply called for an internal debate on the issue.

National Republicans should have STFU

1. Flags don’t kill people. People (with weapons) kill people.
2. The issue with the Confederate battle flag is complex. Yes, some hate groups have co-opted it, but at the same time, it represents resistance against what increasing numbers of people see as an intrusive, meddlesome central government that does not share their values.
3. It’s as if the United States is slowly coming apart at the seams. You already have 2 Americas. The secular America of the northeast, mid-Atlantic/Rust Belt and Pacific Coast; the traditional America of the Southeast, Texas and most of the Midwest and mountain West. It’s a classic example of what divorce lawyers call irreconcilable differences. The USA is more divided than at any time since 1865. Hopefully, if separation does come, it’ll be peaceful

"As battle flags were powerful military symbols, great significance was placed on the capture of an enemy flag. This would often lead to great pomp and ceremony."

The battle rages...

Conferate Flag

Thank you, Mr. Cruz

Thank you, Rick Tyler, you mean.

If Mr. Tyler is still employed in 48 hours, Senator Cruz will deserve the thanks. Not before.

It won’t be peaceful at all.

The leftists won’t let anyone escape their plans for the “workers utopia” they have envisioned.
They can’t have a place where freedom shines outward so close that their serfs can see there is a better way.

No, for them it is all or nothing.
They know that like the East Germans, their own citizens who desire a better life would vote with their feet.
In their eyes, better we all live in misery than let a few live in peace and happiness.

Well in that case, we should count our blessings that mot active military —and recent veterans—hail from “flyoverland”, then.

There is no way a rational person can look at this hysteria and see anything but a Stalinist purge. I can't believe I am even seeing this, with everyone trying to one-up the next by being more irrational.

Yeah, I’m one of those who thought it was past time for Southern states to stop celebrating the flag.

But the whiplash purging of it from public commerce or acceptability is indeed appalling. What’s worse is seeing how easily social media mob rule leads to businesses, governments and individuals immediately enforcing an extreme suppression of speech.

It’s not dissimilar to how a live-and-let-live acceptance of gay marriage immediately makes it discriminatory or oppressive to refer to a wife or husband, or to teach other than bizarre theories of sex and gender down to the kindergarten level.

PC enforcement gets only faster, more authoritative, and more oppressive all the time.

I never said they had fully thought it out.
There are many vets in rural Virginia as well.
I believe they think we’ll all just fall in line for the reeducation camps.

Are they in for a surprise!

The secular America of the northeast, mid-Atlantic/Rust Belt and Pacific Coast

There's plenty of traditional Americans in those places (and some leftists in the SE, Texas, parts of non-rust belt Midwest and Mtn west).

For the most part, it's about the major cities and academia havens vs everyone else.

That is why I support Cruz.

All of the Trump people got on here and bashed Cruz for selling out...well, Trump on this issue sold out.

Cruz was solid, as usual.

Go Cruz!

Well, I understand where you are coming from, but I still thank Mr. Cruz for a) standing by the comment, and b) not jumping on the bandwagon of complete idiots.

He does deserve thanks now IMO.

Yes it’s “his fist” as it smashes the White power structure. The dedication expands it beyond just Joe Louis himself.
