Spanish-language media dub Jeb Bush 'Latino' 2016 candidate
The Washington Examiner ^ | May 7, 2015 | Eddie Scarry

It's early in the process, but Spanish-language U.S. media is seeing former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, a likely candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, as one of their own.

Bush is a fluent Spanish speaker and married to a Mexican, leading some Spanish-language media outlets to identify him as a "Latino" candidate, even though he's very much white.

In late April, Telemundo ran an Associated Press article translated to Spanish and said Bush can "express himself in English and Spanish in declarations that [highlight] his deep ties with the Hispanic culture."

Because Bush is an outspoken supporter of immigration reform — the kind that would grant some legal protection to illegal immigrants currently in the country — Noticias MundoFox in February said he's "one of the Republican candidates better positioned to attract the Latino vote..."

On Univision's "Al Punto" in January, Jorge Ramos, the most high-profile Spanish-speaking news anchor in the U.S., declared the 2016 GOP primary "historic" because Sen. Marco Rubio and Sen. Ted Cruz, both of Latino decent, are in the running. "And Jeb, if we want to turn him into a Latino, too," Ramos added.

The Spain-based newspaper El País described Bush as uniquely "capable" of appealing to the Latino vote, which is "more decisive in the presidential elections, and with which the Republican Party has a hard time connecting."

Not every Latino Republican has necessarily had the same favorable coverage.

Univision, in particular, has often been critical of Marco Rubio, who is Cuban-American and also speaks fluent Spanish. And the network's owner, Haim Saban, is an outspoken supporter of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

It’s like waking up in some bastardized mashup of 1984, Brave New World and Discworld every day.

Well he succeeded in pandering to the Hispanics, I wonder if he is going to claim a different sex so he can pander to the LGBTQIA’s next.

“Latino” is not a race, it’s an artifical political category concocted to further divide Americans and give special privileges to some. “Latino” and “White” are not mutually exclusive. So it’s not that much of a stretch to call Bush a “Latino” seeing as how he has assimilated to Hispanic culture and seems to prefer it to his native culture. Of course, the Hispanicization of the U.S. means the end of our constitutional order. But Jeb and his family don’t care, they are building their own dynasty.

For those of us ideological junkies it might be hard to understand. But most people are not ideological. This is even more true of Hispanics than the rest of us.

Most people vote and make other decisions based on who appears to be friendly and their friend. A friend started a group that was for Puerto Ricans only. It’s agenda was Puerto Ricans only as he felt Cubans and Mexicans were getting the best Affirmative Action benefits and the Puerto Ricans were being shorted.

He made me a member of the group and introduced me to others as Puerto Rican although I am not Puerto Rican. Likewise Mexicans have called me a Mexican, even before I married a Mexican.

Hispanics have positions on the issues. But they vote based on who is friendly and appears to be their friend. The Cruz style might seem unfriendly and that might turn them off. Romney certainly appeared aloof, unfriendly.

The same is true of non-Hispanics, but to a lesser extent. Blacks, Whites and Martians have positions on issues. But they often vote against their ideology and for the person who appears friendly and their friend.

Jeb Bush is not a Latino, he is literally “culturally appropriating latino culture” and the left looks the other way...
