If Hillary Clinton is called ‘Hillary' in stories, why not call Ted Cruz ‘Ted' and Rand Paul ‘Rand'?

Studies find sexism slips into political coverage.

Hillary Clinton is a presidential candidate, former first lady, twice-elected U.S. senator, ex-secretary of state – and a grandma.

She is not the first candidate with some of those qualifications, including the grandparent part. When President George H.W. Bush – a former congressman, director of the CIA, ambassador and White House wingman - took office he had 12 grandchildren. While Mitt Romney was campaigning, two more grandchildren were added to his brood. Yet Bush and Romney’s roles as gramps were never headline worthy. Grandma Hillary, however, already has become part of the discourse.

Sure, there is a temptation to throw up your hands and decry the patriarchy when Clinton is cast as a scrunchie-wearing grandmother who also happens to be a politician. But as the press and the public become more comfortable seeing women in politics, those overt media missteps are growing scarce. There isn’t much room these days to forgive statements that could’ve been made with a scotch in one hand and a cigar in the other.

Scholars say the contrast in reporting goes beyond what they deem an obvious example of sexism. They say gender-laden language weaves its way through stories about Clinton in much less conspicuous ways and that it is surprisingly (or maybe not surprisingly) pervasive.

In academic studies of the writing that surrounded Clinton in her 2008 campaign, scholars found that gendered language, or writing that is characteristic of one particular gender, surfaced most often through seemingly innocuous semantic choices. Granted, what is or is not sexist is somewhat in the eye of the beholder. And yes, there is the matter of what the writer actually intended. But it’s hard to ignore the contrast in how male and female candidates are portrayed....

Because we already have had a Clinton running for president. That is why George W Bush was known as Dubya, so as not to confuse him with his dad.

Next silly question from the graduate student?

The media doesn’t do that because if they did it would humanize Cruz and Paul. It was Hillary herself who used her first name on her advertising back in ‘08. Like she was Cher or something...

Like she was Cher or something...

That's the example I was going to use. Senator Cruz is a leader, so he gets his full name, just like George Patton and George Washington. Hillary is merely a celebrity, so she gets rich for being there just like Beyonce and Cher, but she's also referred to in the same first-name manner as other celebrities.

So even though all her campaign material calls her Hillary on purpose in an attempt to make her seem less arrogant and elitist, it’s still sexist to call her that? The reason Ted and Rand are not routinely referred to by there first names is because they don’t consistently and persistently refer to themselves by their first names in their literature.

I cannot believe this freakin’ bitch with her 9 gabillion scandals, one as frequently as only a few weeks ago with the 30,000 deleted emails, is seriously being considered for POTUS. It really goes to show how incredibly effed up the left is, it really does. I mean let’s not even talk about the scandals, what has she done other than cash in? She’s accomplished absolutely nothing in her professional life other than get elected and defend rapists including her husband. Other than that, every job she’s ever held she massively screwed up.

But it wouldn’t be sexist or patriarchal to use her father’s surname (Rodham) or her husband’s surname (Clinton)?

These womyn defy logic.
