The most conservative candidates are, with the exception of 1964, invariably the bridesmaid and never the bride in the GOP presidential primary. (In 1980, there were candidates such as Rep. Phil Crane of Illinois to Ronald Reagan’s right.) Part of the explanation is that the most conservative voters divide their support among candidates, leaving a path for a more moderate figure to coast to victory. And part of the explanation is that they tend to set upon candidates who self-destruct, are not qualified or are simply too extreme — and often all three. In 2016, how can they break this pattern?
It starts with the recognition that even within the GOP, the party needs someone who can pull in some less conservative voters. Even if the party registered thousands of new, very conservative voters, it would be unlikely to create a plurality big enough to nominate a candidate whose support comes solely from the right wing of the primary electorate. In other words, the party has to think strategically, not merely convince itself that the most conservative candidate in the field is the horse to bet on. That said, the right will want the reassurance that its candidate of choice does not morph into a dreaded moderate.
In the danger zone for self-destructing and lacking sufficient qualifications, it should not surprise readers of Right Turn, we put Sens. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Ted Cruz (R-Tex.). Leaving ideology out of it, they are freshmen senators with little or no experience in executive leadership, have never run a national campaign and have annoyed large contingents in the GOP....

Moving on to category two, the only purpose of having Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) on to speak about immigration and impeachment is to generate headlines for the following day: “Republican congressman says ridiculous thing” or “Republicans support ridiculous thing.” The media and Democrats know that King has been repeatedly admonished by his own party and speaks for practically no one. Why not have on someone who does speak for the mainstream and really might give a sense of what is likely to happen?
If Ron Johnson, David Vitter and Ted Cruz were governors those states would be in an identical position to executive masterstrokers Walker, Jindal and Perry.

I know many so called conservatives who have that one issue that makes them reject a 100% conservative. The issue can be abortion, health care for family members, social security for a parent, medicare for parents, union bennies (firefighters and police) or help for the poor (some Catholics I know). Other than their important issue they are far right!

It’s a sick joke that Rubin gets to pose as a conservative voice at the Washington Post. She’s a smug leftist on immigration, and refuses to see that mass immigration (even the legal kind) is a Democrat-importing policy.
As if running “moderates” like McCain and Romney has helped.
In 2008 and 2012, the GOP ran to the “center” and lost.
In 2010, they ran to the right and won BIG.
In 2014, they benefitted from the Democrats losing.
I don’t expect to agree with whoever the presidential candidate is 100% of the time but I’m so sick of watching the Boehners and McConnells of the world caving in and giving up without putting up a fight. I just want our presidential candidate to go after the Democrats. No more RINOS like Bob Dole, Jerry Ford, the Bush Dynasty, McVain and Romney in the top slot. We need fighters and people not afraid of the media or the Demcrats.
