GOP Promotes Rubio Even Though He is Less Popular With Hispanics Than Bush
Politicususa ^ | April 13, 2013 | Jason Easley

Sen. Marco Rubio’s approval rating is six points lower with Hispanics than George W. Bush’s, so the Republican Party thinks it is a great idea to put him on all 5 Sunday shows.

The Republican “rebrand” strategy is centered around making Sen. Marco Rubio the face of immigration reform. The problem is that Hispanics aren’t flocking to the Florida Republican. A new poll from NBC News/WSJ/Telemundo found that despite months of efforts to elevate Rubio, the senator’s approval rating with Hispanics is 23%. Twenty five percent of those polled were neutral, 12% had a negative opinion, and 40% didn’t know him. On the surface, these numbers don’t seem all that bad. The fact that Rubio is a relative unknown could provide upside for his approval.

Republicans might be feeling good about Rubio if the same poll didn’t reveal that George W. Bush’s approval rating with Hispanics is six points higher (29%) than Marco Rubio’s (23%). President Obama’s approval rating with Hispanics is almost three times larger than Rubio’s (64%), but not even the president can match potential 2016 candidate Hillary Clinton’s approval rating of 65%.

The GOP is responding to this lukewarm reception for Rubio by putting him on all five of the Sunday news shows tomorrow as their face of immigration reform. Just like they did with women and Sarah Palin, Republicans are acting on the assumption that Hispanic Americans will vote for them if they promote a Hispanic person.

Instead of admitting that the problem is what they stand for, Republicans are trying to once again put a different race/gender/ethnicity on the same failed platform.

Splashing Marco Rubio’s face all over television on Sunday morning isn’t going send Hispanics back to the Republican Party.....

Rubio isn't all that popular with the rest of us either. Another sellout.

Here's one... hispanics will rally aound white Uncle Teddy's mouldering corpse before they'll be impressed enough by a republican of any shade to go GOP.

Besides the fact Rubio smells like a phony to anyone with a nose.

I was done with Rubio when he gave Obama cover for his illegal war in Libya.

...and 40% didn’t know him.

Hmmm... I wonder why?

Maybe the lame-stream media are afraid he might become popular with Hispanics, if they were to get to know him, so they report as little as possible about/on Rubio. Can't take a chance on anyone leaving the Plantation, you know!!

Barry and the ‘RATS have separated the people living in this country into their different tribes. Rubio is a Cuban not a Mexican. Mexicans won’t vote for him. JMO.

"Hispanic" is a liberal concoction that attempts to lump all the Western Hemisphere's descendants of Spaniards together. Most liberals [and the GOPe] would probably even try to include the Brazilians in that heap.

But Mexicans, for example, don't feel any more solidarity with Cubans than most Americans do with white South Africans. They sort of speak the same language, but that's about it.

Throw in Rubio's alleged conservatism and it's a lost cause altogether. The guy will sink or swim on his merits. Liberal "Hispanics" will not be swayed by his ability to throw out campaign slogans in Cuban-accented Spanish.

GOP have no clue what Hispanics stand for

A lily white Cuban does not play well with Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Central Americans, etc...

Even if Rubio comes with Amnesty, money, government checks, unicorns.... it does not change the fact he looks more gringo than your average white guy

How did it come to pass that every person bearing a surname of Spanish origins is assumed to share the same
portfolio of socio-political beliefs and attitudes?

The mother of George Zimmerman (self-defender against Treyvon Martin’s assault) is of South American native (Indian?) origins but has a Spanish family name, as do many Spouth and Central Americans with not a drop of Spanish blood or cultural ancestry.
Yet for some arcane reason George is labelled “Hispanic,” and is lumped together (but not by his own personal choice) with people having ancestral roots in Cuba, Haiti, Guatemala, Mexico, etc, etc, etc,; all presumed to share like political beliefs and sympathies.
WHY?

It doesn’t matter what the GOP does. Large swaths of the US population will vote for a pile of cow manure just because it is a @#$!’n Democrat.

Because he’s a white Cuban, and brown Mexicans and Central Americans don’t see him as one of their own any more than Mitt Romney is.
<p.
It’s about much more than a common language.
