Herman Cain's win in the Florida straw poll could very well be a harbinger of building momentum, according to a new poll of Republicans in the state released Thursday by SurveyUSA.
Pundits had initially questioned whether Cain's victory in the straw poll in which he earned more than twice the votes of any other candidate was a protest vote by Republicans disenchanted with the debate performance of presumptive front-runner Rick Perry. But Cain ranked second Thursday in the statewide poll of Republican voters, with 25 percent support he trails Florida front-runner Mitt Romney by just 2 points. Both Romney and Cain have substantial leads over Perry, who finished third with 13 percent of the vote.
The news is especially troubling for the Perry campaign, which had hoped to make inroads in the crucial swing state. The Texas governor held a breakfast over the weekend for Florida straw poll voters and was actively courting support, while other candidates including Romney, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann and Jon Huntsman all left to campaign in other states.
"There are a number of candidates who have spurned Florida's straw poll, and I think that's a big mistake," Perry said Saturday. "I have all my hopes on Florida."
But Perry did not seem to make a good impression with Florida voters, who may have been concerned by his debate performance or continued description of the Social Security program as a "Ponzi scheme." The SurveyUSA poll found that four times as many Florida Republicans had a favorable view of Romney relative to Perry.
Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, might have to be more concerned about Cain, who has been surging in national polls after the straw poll victory. On Wednesday, a national poll released by Fox News found the former pizza company executive running third behind Romney and Perry, tripling his level of support from a month prior.
Romney seems to be shoring up support among older voters, women and moderates, while Cain is gathering steam behind men, younger voters and Tea Party members. Perry's stronghold in Florida remains evangelicals.
Newt Gingrich, Bachmann and Texas Rep. Ron Paul effectively tied for fourth place in the SurveyUSA poll, with around 5 percent.
If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you have a soft spot for The Hermanator. Good on ya’.
I would encourage all Palin supporters to consider Cain in the event that Sarah decides against a run.
The Romneyites are winning and they are doing it with the help of Bachmann, Santorum and the “conservatives” in FR.
Great. You knocked out Perry.
Good job.
Pat yourselves on the f*ing backs, all of you.
Comments ?
Yea. Lib website The Hill, is pushing Romney
It is really irritating and an insult to the existing candidates for the Repubs to seek out Christie and Palin. We have some really good choices in our party, imo, why wait for 2 that still have not entered the race?
That is well within the margin of error. I think Cain is about to bring Romney some pain!
2/3rds of voters do not even know Herman Cain yet.
Ricardo Romney, Milt Perry, whatever. Bob Dull meets Dubya meets Poppy meets Jerry Ford with a pinch of Juan McLame. Speeding towards socialism at 75 mph instead of 100 mph. Whoopie!!
He is number 2 on my list ;)
November 13, 1979. Know what happened on that date?
SurveyUSA poll. Accurate as a DC area weatherman.
That was 32 years ago. Reagan had already run an infomerical that summer.
As has Gov. Palin. Thanks for backing me up.
Vet you are a great FReeper and better yet a even GREATER American, but I can’t help but think that you will be posting something similar come Monday, November 5, 2012 and then of course you will start again on Wednesday, November 7, 2012. ;-)
I’m not talking about you when I talk about Romneyites in Perry-bashing clothing.
But you know they are here.
You know it.
Nope. If she doesn’t declare by the primary cut-off dates or starts talking third party, I’ll start looking around. I’m not a cultist. I’ve actually worked for two administrations and several campaigns.
Reagan announces he is candidate for the Republican nomination. Is that what your thinking? Do I win anything?
You win a cookie!!
