An FBI agent said Wednesday that finding Flight 93's black box was the key to investigating its hijacking and fatal crash -- a plan which was apparently related to terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.
Meanwhile, presidential press secretary Ari Fleisher said that the White House and Air Force One were intended targets of those attacks. Apparently, the plane that struck the Pentagon was intended for the White House.
The plane departed from Newark and was headed to San Francisco, but diverted from its flight pattern and crashed nose-first in a large field about 60 miles outside Pittsburgh. All 38 passengers and seven crew members were presumed dead.
Other News: FBI Interested In Searching Local Townhouse, Car "The importance of finding the black box cannot be overstated," said Corvington, who told reporters that the device would have recorded any conversations and struggles on the plane.
Corvington said an effective mapping job was necessary so evidence could be recovered from the rural area, a process which he said would take three to five weeks. Toward that end, he said National Transportation Safety Board representatives planned a Wednesday afternoon fly-over to help "assess the scope" of the scene.
Carnegie Mellon University will be using a robotic helicopter to help in the investigation. The helicopter will be flown over the area to create 3-D color images of the terrain. It is hoped that the images could help locate the black box.
Anywhere from 130 to 150 troopers would guard the area at one time, according to Lt. Col. Robert Hickes. Click here for a slideshow of the crash scene, including pictures of debris from the site.
The next FBI news conference will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
Finding any substantial evidence from the plane will be difficult. Any remaining debris is very small. WTAE-TV's Paul Van Osdol also reports that some debris has been spotted up to two miles away from the crash scene. Some has been washing up on shore at nearby Indian Lake.
Several residents gathered debris, placed it in a plastic bag and carried it to police. Officials do not want residents to touch any possible debris. They should contact police, instead.
At least four witnesses who were at the crash scene within five minutes of the crash told WTAE's Paul Van Osdol that they saw another plane in the area.
Somerset County resident Jim Brandt said that he saw another plane in the area. He said it stayed there for one or two minutes before leaving.
Another Somerset County resident, Tom Spinello, said that he saw the plane. He said that it had high back wings.
Both men said that the plane had no markings on it, either civilian or military. The FBI said that it does not think that it was a military plane, but it would not rule out the possibility of it being a civilian plane.
Thirdly, two reliable congressional sources reported on Tuesday that an F-16 had shot down United 93. Fourthly, there is no need to have 130 state troopers (reported in the above story) surrounding the crash site which is fairly remote.
Also, the flight path of United 93 was in the direction of Washington D.C. It's safe to assume it would have crashed into another building in the capitol, if allowed.
The simple truth is that the American people would support the shoot down of this civilian airliner if the government honestly explained it. As usual, the government will not trust Americans with the truth.
TRUTH IS THE FIRST CASUALTY OF WAR.
However, if it does come to light that it did happen and there was an attempt to cover it up our war effort will suffer bigtime.
MORE INFLAMMATORY, CONSPIRATORIAL CRAP!
The terrorists on this flight said they had a BOMB! The papers(debris) could have come from a DOOR being opened on the plane. Shame on you for stating as fact, some lame conspiratorial theory without absolutely any facts whatsoever!
Most of what you are alleging as "proof" has been debunked. For example, the "debris" from the jet that landed miles away was things like aluminum foil and paper, which could well have been blown skyward and landed far from the site.
No "hard parts" have been found.
Finally, there is no reason for the government to conceal the fact of shooting this plane down, had it occurred. Such an act would actually have been welcomed as an act of control over the situation in a time when utter helplessness has been the overwhelming feeling.
I'll never be ashamed of posting information I believe to be the truth and supported by the known facts.
Wrong! It could have been due to a bomb going off or a door being opened. Another story had the remote debris as being mostly paper.
Fourthly, there is no need to have 130 state troopers (reported in the above story) surrounding the crash site which is fairly remote.
This is not significant whatsoever. Every part of the country had a massive OVER PRESENCE of law enforcement.
It is really sad how some people see a conspiracy under every rock.
In times like these, lots of things will happen that we don't like.
Thank you for the personal insult.
So what if it was covered up?
Could not disagree with you more, precisely because it was the correct response.
We should not detract from their heroic efforts which most likely brought down the plane.
I suggest you and your flipped-out Conspiracy Theory buddies go off in the corner and talk among yourselves for awhile, okay? The adults have work to do.
