Posted on 09/13/2001 22:33:52 PDT by Plummz >SHANKSVILLE, Pa. -- A partial transcript has been obtained

An FBI agent said Wednesday that finding Flight 93's black box was the key to investigating its hijacking and fatal crash -- a plan which was apparently related to terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.

Meanwhile, presidential press secretary Ari Fleisher said that the White House and Air Force One were intended targets of those attacks. Apparently, the plane that struck the Pentagon was intended for the White House.

The plane departed from Newark and was headed to San Francisco, but diverted from its flight pattern and crashed nose-first in a large field about 60 miles outside Pittsburgh. All 38 passengers and seven crew members were presumed dead.

Other News: FBI Interested In Searching Local Townhouse, Car "The importance of finding the black box cannot be overstated," said Corvington, who told reporters that the device would have recorded any conversations and struggles on the plane.

Corvington said an effective mapping job was necessary so evidence could be recovered from the rural area, a process which he said would take three to five weeks. Toward that end, he said National Transportation Safety Board representatives planned a Wednesday afternoon fly-over to help "assess the scope" of the scene.

Carnegie Mellon University will be using a robotic helicopter to help in the investigation. The helicopter will be flown over the area to create 3-D color images of the terrain. It is hoped that the images could help locate the black box.

Anywhere from 130 to 150 troopers would guard the area at one time, according to Lt. Col. Robert Hickes. Click here for a slideshow of the crash scene, including pictures of debris from the site.

The next FBI news conference will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

Finding any substantial evidence from the plane will be difficult. Any remaining debris is very small. WTAE-TV's Paul Van Osdol also reports that some debris has been spotted up to two miles away from the crash scene. Some has been washing up on shore at nearby Indian Lake.

Several residents gathered debris, placed it in a plastic bag and carried it to police. Officials do not want residents to touch any possible debris. They should contact police, instead.

At least four witnesses who were at the crash scene within five minutes of the crash told WTAE's Paul Van Osdol that they saw another plane in the area.

Somerset County resident Jim Brandt said that he saw another plane in the area. He said it stayed there for one or two minutes before leaving.

Another Somerset County resident, Tom Spinello, said that he saw the plane. He said that it had high back wings.

Both men said that the plane had no markings on it, either civilian or military. The FBI said that it does not think that it was a military plane, but it would not rule out the possibility of it being a civilian plane.

TOPICS: Editorial; Your Opinion/Questions
KEYWORDS:
United Airlines Flight 93 was shot down by an F-16. The FAA yesterday admitted a U.S. F-16 had closely shadowed the flight for some time before it crashed. The above article mentions several pertinent facts: First, some debris was found two miles from the main crash site. That could ONLY be pieces of the United flight knocked down by a missile impact. No pieces of the airliner could have been thrown two miles from the site. Secondly, four eyewitnesses saw an unmarked (F-16's are grey and appeared unmarked)aircraft in the area. Remember, the nation's civilian air traffic had been grounded for some time at that point.

Thirdly, two reliable congressional sources reported on Tuesday that an F-16 had shot down United 93. Fourthly, there is no need to have 130 state troopers (reported in the above story) surrounding the crash site which is fairly remote.

Also, the flight path of United 93 was in the direction of Washington D.C. It's safe to assume it would have crashed into another building in the capitol, if allowed.

The simple truth is that the American people would support the shoot down of this civilian airliner if the government honestly explained it. As usual, the government will not trust Americans with the truth.

TRUTH IS THE FIRST CASUALTY OF WAR.

I don't think that a shoot down has been anywhere near confirmed yet.

However, if it does come to light that it did happen and there was an attempt to cover it up our war effort will suffer bigtime.

MORE INFLAMMATORY, CONSPIRATORIAL CRAP!

The terrorists on this flight said they had a BOMB! The papers(debris) could have come from a DOOR being opened on the plane. Shame on you for stating as fact, some lame conspiratorial theory without absolutely any facts whatsoever!

You're full of sh*t, but I guess you know that.

Most of what you are alleging as "proof" has been debunked. For example, the "debris" from the jet that landed miles away was things like aluminum foil and paper, which could well have been blown skyward and landed far from the site.

No "hard parts" have been found.

Finally, there is no reason for the government to conceal the fact of shooting this plane down, had it occurred. Such an act would actually have been welcomed as an act of control over the situation in a time when utter helplessness has been the overwhelming feeling.

All that has to happen to convince me is for Rumsfeld or an appropriate designate to come in front of the cameras and say, "Rumors to the contrary, United 93 was absolutely NOT fired upon by any US military aircraft."

My God, people. Is there anyone out there who feels that the military would have any reason to fear public reaction if they had shot it down? Don't you think the military knows that? Some of the smartest PR people in the world work at the Pentagon and if they had shot down the United Flight the networks would have been awash with interviews with Captain So-and-so, the man who protected Air Force One and the life of the President by shooting down the hijacked airplane. It flat didn't happen.

I did provide facts. I posted this as an editorial and opinion with a question mark in the title. Shooting down this airliner makes pefect sense, is justifiable and is certainly not a conspiratorial conclusion.

I'll never be ashamed of posting information I believe to be the truth and supported by the known facts.

Wrong! It could have been due to a bomb going off or a door being opened. Another story had the remote debris as being mostly paper.

Fourthly, there is no need to have 130 state troopers (reported in the above story) surrounding the crash site which is fairly remote.

This is not significant whatsoever. Every part of the country had a massive OVER PRESENCE of law enforcement.

It is really sad how some people see a conspiracy under every rock.

I guess you would be like those people who criticized Bush for not explaining why he flew all over the country in order to evade terrorist attacks.

I don't belive the plane was shot down. But so what if it was? So what if it was covered up? There was a good reason to shoot it down, and good reason to belive that Americans would not take the news well. I don't like being lied to any more than anyone else, but there will be times that people will make the less than honorable decision on issuance of news like this, it doesn't mean that the whole entire government conspired to lie for sinister reasons.

In times like these, lots of things will happen that we don't like.

I would be inclined to agree with you 100% except that I did hear a DOD official yesterday (dammit I do not remember the name!) given the opportunity to deny any shoot down and he did not do so.

But so what if it was?
Agree, in fact shooting it down was the right thing to do under the circumstances.

So what if it was covered up?
Could not disagree with you more, precisely because it was the correct response.

IMHO...the aircraft was forced into a steep dive by the surviving flight crew member and broke up in the air when one of the terrorists tried to regain controll....I don't think it is normal ops for a F16 to fly around fully armed...

It wouldn't have to come to light nor would it have to be true. There will always be those who will believe it anyway, to suit their agenda. And there are many who want it to be true because their agenda needs bolstering.

The only FACT that we do know through cell phone calls is that some passengers, who knew their fate, decided to fight the terrorists.

We should not detract from their heroic efforts which most likely brought down the plane.

The reason Rummy hasn't come out to deny the rumors is because he probably hasn't even heard them. He must have forgotten to renew his subscription to the Tinfoil Report.

Oh, don't mention it. It was from the heart.

I suggest you and your flipped-out Conspiracy Theory buddies go off in the corner and talk among yourselves for awhile, okay? The adults have work to do.
