A Muslim man was shot outside a mosque in Rhode Island as he set up a table to sell Islamic clothing on Friday morning.
He was bending down to arrange his table outside the Islamic Center of Rhode Island around 11.40am when a suspect in a vehicle opened fire on him and quickly fled the scene.
The man, who remains unidentified, sustained a non-life-threatening injury and was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment, according to authorities.
Imam Abdul-Latif Sackor said that the shooter lingered across the street for approximately 20 minutes before discharging a gunshot.
He believed that the shooting was a targeted attack, not necessarily directed at the victim, but rather aimed at the mosque and the Muslim community.
As of Friday afternoon, the suspect has not been identified, and there have been no arrests made in connection.
'I think it was more directed towards the Muslims,' Sackor said. 'We've been here for years and we haven't had this type of issue until recently,' he added.
Sackor told the Boston Globe that the suspect, who wore glasses and a mask, had sat in a sedan with Massachusetts license plates in the parking lot across the street from the mosque.
He and others inside the mosque had assumed that the person was early for the prayer services, which was scheduled at 11.30 am.
Providence Police Major David Lapatin said the victim is affiliated with the mosque and regularly sells clothing on Fridays at 39 Haskins St.
Sackor said the shooting was captured on camera, although there have been no surveillance footage released in connection with the incident.

Based upon the limited information and lack of any description aside from sunglasses and a mask, I am quite confident the shooter was not a whiteale, otherwise it would have been noted in the headline of first sentence.

I doubt it was a redneck since it was one shot and a bad one, at that, since the injury wasn’t life threatening.

Need to wait and see about more information. There are parts of upper Rhode Island that I think Jim Crow still exists. For me, In New England, RI man is nearly equal to Florida man. There are some serious knuckles living there and both city and the country.
The only thing you will not get is a car chase in RI as the rumor is the state police used to have orders to shoot out the tires if someone runs more than a mile from a cop. Even if this false you just did even want to consider being stupid with RISP.
