Belief in Five Spiritual Entities–God, Angels, Heaven, Hell, the Devil– Edges Down to New Lows

The percentages of Americans who believe in each of five religious entities — God, angels, heaven, hell and the devil — have edged downward by three to five percentage points since 2016. Still, majorities believe in each, ranging from a high of 74% believing in God to lows of 59% for hell and 58% for the devil. About two-thirds each believe in angels (69%) and heaven (67%).

Gallup has used this framework to measure belief in these spiritual entities five times since 2001, and the May 1-24, 2023, poll finds that each is at its lowest point. Compared with 2001, belief in God and heaven is down the most (16 points each), while belief in hell has fallen 12 points, and the devil and angels are down 10 points each.

Whether boo jit or not, this IS what "they" think and as is true with the Christian, "As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he."

They actually do operate from what they think, and especially what the perceive to be factual for their customer base, thus making polity and policy governing their method of governance and more importantly to the consumer, how much wealth will be allowed to/for the common citizen.

Inflation will continue to drain the common man of his perceived power.

In the sixties, they invented Viet Nam to drain the American pool of intelligent (Their public school system really WAS successful) "angry young men" . . a serious threat to "the establishment".

In latter years, they learned they could accomplish the same thing without losing a voter base by merely scrambling childrens' brains with sex, drugs, rap n' shit, and 'effed up indoctrination.

Eliminate common language definition of words, and produce nothing BUT indoctrinairs, call them public school teachers, and eliminate the competition.

A brilliant, and so far successful plan.

Most churches in America have become social clubs built around a vague kind of Christian "ideology" (i.e., not based on Jesus but loosely based on his teachings).

And when people from those churches mix with a population that is changing rapidly because of technology and a disintegrating belief in freedom (democracy with a little "d"), you end up with what we have. A mess.

Wealth, material consumption, sexual temptation, and self-interest are powerful enemies. People without Jesus have no defense against such enemies.

Astute observation. Don’t know what can be done about it though. Western culture which is the greatest culture ever is at stake. It is teetering on the brink and the Brandons of the world are tripping it.

The push poll attempts to bring the death of Divine Providence. But Divine Providence is timeless, it lives forever.

WHat a laugh. Watch the pollsters ride the lightning as they lose all protection..

And the funny thing is that Western culture was built on a foundation of Christianity...and it is dying from its own successes because those successes created temptations that have drawn the population away from the thing on which it was founded.

I guess that's the way of the world. Hardship creates good character, good character makes you successful, and success destroys your good character.

The devil " You're losing the battle"

Atheist psychiatrist " I didn't even know we were in a battle"

the devil "That's why you're losing".

psychiatrist " You're insane"

The devil " I assure you I am the most sane person you'll ever meet"

I heard Jordan Peterson yesterday respond to a young atheist who had ask for a definition of "religion."

Peterson said, "Religion is the basis for how you act out."

The young atheist was confused and so was I...at first.

Peterson (he's becoming a Christian) went on to elaborate that if you hold a belief but don't act on it, that religion is just an empty label. For example, a REAL believing Christian will act like one in every way. He will make mistakes because he is human, but when he makes mistakes he will act to correct them.

A person who claims to be a Christian but cheats on his taxes or is nasty to other people is, of course, just a superficial Christian.

That entire Peterson conversation kept popping into my head last night.

That's the truth...but there's one problem with it.

The Devil is rarely honest enough to tell someone the truth.

What do we expect when public schools teach evolution as “science”? Evolution teaches there is no God..... which means there is no devil, angels etc.

(I grew up with this teaching since my Dad was a college educated evolutionist. He was an atheist.)

I believe that this was the beginning of our downhill slide in America. God was removed from the public sphere. Remember when stores were closed on Sundays?

Watch nature shows. It only takes moments before Evolution is mentioned as the cause. The media cements this indoctrination.

The percentages of physicists who believe in each of Newton's 3 laws of motion as perfect truths have edged downward by three to five percentage points since 2016. Newton's equations will still get you to the moon, but keep that cockpit window.

This just in: all models, physics formulas, theories, and religions are wrong; an embarrassingly small number of them are useful.

All other things being equal, bet on the team of traditional Christians over a team of progressive Demonrats.

What an odd poll... they are not clear on “entity”

1st of all, Hell is not an entity. It’s a place.

2nd, The devil is an angel... so that’s 2 to scratch off the list because Satan falls within that group.

3rd, they left out demons. They are entities too, and are distinct from angels and humans, in that they are hybrids of both. (disembodied spirits of the Nephillum... see Gen 6)

Finally, they leave out lower forms of life... i.e. “Are there animals in heaven???”

Yes, it is odd, but only because entities and places are one and the same. Nevertheless, the point--that belief in God, angels, and so on has reached a new low,--stands since it is true.

Exactly right. Evolution as an anti-creation origin account has replaced the Genesis account in the hearts of a majority of Westerners, Americans, and even some Christians. What none of them appear to know is that if evolution is true then humans, rather than being God's ensouled image bearers, have no souls, or inner persons.. By extension, if we have no souls and are not persons, we have no Constitutional rights as they are grounded in the reality of humans as people, plural of person.

There are far more consequences that can be revealed, but the list is long, so these most important ones must suffice.

Far too many people conflate actual true, life changing relationship with Jesus Christianity with cultural Christianity.

Amen.

I think most people in my local church don't want a real relationship with Jesus. It gets in the way of their conventional lives.

I recently assembled the audio Bible narrated on youtube by David Suchet (of Hercules Poirot fame) and tried to share it with local friends from church because it is easier to listen to the Bible when eyes are tired at the end of the day. Only one person was interested and even he hasn't actually used it.

Most people looked at me like I was a Jesus freak from the 1960's.;-)

I have subsequently learned that these people have no interest in reading the Bible whether in print or on audio.

As you know, Godly people have a hunger for God's Word. I guess I was naive in believing this would be welcome.

BTW, links to the audio Bible are on my homepage. Check it out (it's on youtube).

I listen for at least an hour a day and again during the night when I can't sleep. The audio Bible is transformative because you get a sense of how the Bible narrative flows (which is difficult to get when reading because, in my case, my eyes get tired after a while).

David Suchet is an incredible actor and a born-again Christian. He reads the Bible with such passion and intonation that it really comes alive.

I've always loved reading the Bible, but now I am addicted. It is so profound and peaceful at the same time.

Re: Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord in vain.

Dennis Prager suggests that the word translated “Take” can also be translated “Carry.”
One carries “the name of the Lord in vain” when they publicly and loudly proclaim that they are a Christian but overtly never act like it.

Prager suggests this does the greatest harm to Christianity.
