President proposed cancelling a day off on 7 January, as well as moving the dates of Statehood Day and Defenders Day, which coincide with Orthodox holidays, by 13 days.

On 28 June 2023, Volodymyr Zelensky registered Bill 9431, which envisages cancelling the celebration of Christmas on 7 January in Ukraine, as well as postponing the dates of Statehood Day and Defenders’ Day, which coincide with the Orthodox holidays of the Baptism of Rus' and the Intercession of the Virgin Mary.

The explanatory note says that "the purpose of the bill is to reject the Russian legacy of imposing Christmas on 7 January and to set the date for celebrating Christmas on 25 December".

Zelensky recalled that the OCU "on May 24, 2023, at the Council of Bishops approved a full transition from 1 September 2023 to the new – New Julian Calendar, which is used by most Orthodox Churches in the world and which, in particular, provides for the celebration of Christmas on December 25 and not January 7".

As a consequence, "the dates for celebrating the Day of Ukrainian Statehood (from July 28 to July 15), which honours the memory of St. Volodymyr the Great, an outstanding statesman, and the Day of Defenders of Ukraine (from October 14 to October 1), which is associated with the Ukrainian military tradition of celebrating the Day of the Protection of the Holy Virgin.

The draft law envisions cancelling days off on January 7, July 28 and October 14. In addition to 25 December, it is proposed to make 15 July and 1 October days off.

If he can’t disprove Jan. 7 as a possible date for Christ’s birth, then he should leave it to those who want to celebrate it then.

“KYIV, Feb 6 (Reuters) - Ukraine’s main Catholic church said on Monday it would move to a new calendar that would see Christmas celebrated on Dec. 25 rather than Jan. 7, amid an effort by Ukrainian institutions to break cultural links to Russia.”

The Orthodox celebrate Christmas on December 25 but the Russian Orthodox calculate that date by the Julian calendar, which falls on January 7 according to the Gregorian calendar used by the West and internationally.

So a Jewish guy has closed Christian churches and is canceling Christian Holidays. Do you Ukraine supporters still support this anti-Christian bigot?

That sneaky Putin must have imposed the Jan 7th date after the invasion right? I mean it can't possibly be that the invasion was just the latest chapter in a long bloody struggle that has had many chapters rather than a sudden act out of the blue that can be put right by sending in some more bombs?

He’s moving the celebration of Christmas to December 25th from January 7th. Not really cancelling Christmas.

Title doesn’t say he’s banning Christmas, it says he’s banning the official celebration of it on January 7th. It is the act of a dictator considering half of (former) Ukraine is Orthodox, and he claims sovereignty over them.

Strange statement considering the demented person currently ruling our Country. We can't point fingers. There's nothing wrong with supporting Ukrainian civilians. We are under the same attack but it's imposed differently, slowly and silently. Happy holidays instead of Merry Christmas. Perverted people are celebrated. Instead of being bombed. we are slowly being told what we can and can't use.
