PITTSBURGH Bishop David Zubik announced Friday that there will be a new parish in the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh, and its one that will specifically serve the black Catholic community.
Following a listening session Feb. 23, the diocese started plans to develop a personal parish, which serves specific spiritual needs often related to a particular culture or an extraordinary need.
On July 13, Saint Benedict the Moor Parish will officially fulfill that need.
The church already exists in Pittsburghs Hill District neighborhood, but when Zubik visited earlier this year, parishioners told him about their 130-year history that allowed them to minister to black Catholics while also navigating the same systems of disadvantages that black Americans faced in the Pittsburgh region, the nation and the Catholic Church.
Along with their sincere enthusiasm and passion for their Catholic faith, I heard and felt their desire to have their unique spiritual and cultural needs met, Zubik said. I want to raise awareness of the need to walk with our black sisters and brothers as they continue to enrich and be an integral part of the Diocese of Pittsburgh and the Catholic Church Universal.

So were going back to segregation and not really considering blacks ordinary Americans Catholics but people who need an immigrant-style ethnic parish?
Sounds like racism to me.
Racism and segregation paid for out of parish out of the Sunday collection.
Just WOW. Lost for words.
Let me try that again -
Racism and segregation paid for out of the Sunday collection.
Since they generally grew up in the US Im still trying to figure out this big difference in culture that they talk about. The American culture?
There was some need for ethnic parishes 100 years ago. For example, recent Italian immigrants spoke only Italian. So it made some sense to organize a parish based on their native language.
That doesnt apply in this instance. Zubik Is pandering, pure and simple. And in doing so, he is weakening his Church, and his community. But why should Zubik care? After all, this is a feel-good moment.
My guess is that black Catholic can attend any church in Pittsburgh, but only black Catholics will be allowed in the black churches. Isn’t that how it usually works. They can segregate, but we can’t.
I’m guessing the Bishop doesn’t know that the word small c catholic means universal.
“Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever!”
Maybe they should make George Wallace the patron saint of the segregated parish.
White people are the new N-words, and it’s perfectly acceptable to be racists against them.
Might this account for the difference?
So at a time where churches are closing and consolidating youbplan to open one purely to serve a subsection of the population?!?
Brilliant. (Rolling Eyes)
A Church focusing on the physical at the expense of the salvation of the immortal soul.
This Church is really becoming pagan
Yep, such freakin imbeciles its nuts
Racism today, racism tomorrow, racism forever.
Isnt it fascinating that in less than 3 weeks we suddenly have full plans about how to segregate communities by race, new laws on the books and a whole slew of social plans corporate, political and religious wide?
Curious isnt it...
Separate but equal. Seems like a great idea. Never mind the separate communion for whites and blacks, they are equal.
I don't know about you, but I do not speak the same language as the majority of blacks in America. (I'm in agreement with your premise. I just couldn't turn down the opportunity to use my new found racism.)
What? segregation all over again? When the collection plate is passed will the people be able to take whatever they need from it?
