Israel Turning 70
Bible, Various | April 19, 2018 | Ezekiel

Pirkei Avot 5

21. He [Yehudah ben Teima] used to say: Five years [is the age] for [the study of] Scripture, Ten [is the age] for [the study of] Mishnah, Thirteen [is the age] for [observing] commandments, Fifteen [is the age] for [the study of] Talmud, Eighteen [is the age] for the [wedding] canopy, Twenty [is the age] for pursuit, Thirty [is the age] for [full] strength, Forty [is the age] for understanding, Fifty [is the age] for [giving] counsel, Sixty [is the age] for mature age, Seventy [is the age] for a hoary head [בֶּן שִׁבְעִים לַשֵּׂיבָה], Eighty [is the age] for [superadded] strength, Ninety [is the age] for [a] bending [stature], One hundred, is [the age at which one is] as if dead, passed away, and ceased from the world.

"Ben sheviim, l’sheivah" (בֶּן שִׁבְעִים לַשֵּׂיבָה) means the age of 70 for "a hoary head", but this phrase is translated from a word meaning to turn/return, i.e. to turn [gray].

שיבה

Compare "return, homecoming"

The root word is based on return, bring back. Also here. Wisdom is in mental reflection, and wisdom gives patience.

"Age 70" (בֶּן שִׁבְעִים) = 474 = da'at (דעת), knowledge

Seventy - shevi'im שבעים

Age 70 is for turning, returning.

70 (ע) is in the middle of the word "seventy", which is in the middle of the word shavim [שבים], "we return."

Furthermore, the next verse (22) connects specifically to 70 because

Ben Bag Bag says: Search in it and search in it, since everything is in it. And in it should you look, and grow old [וְסִיב] and be worn in it; and from it do not move, since there is no characteristic greater than it.

Which is all about

Teaching the Seventy Faces of Torah

>>>

I strongly believe that the development of cognitive pluralism lies at the heart of Jewish learning. The classic rabbinic expression of this is shiv‘im panim laTorah, there are seventy faces to the Torah. Our job as talmidei Torah is to uncover those seventy faces. When Ben Bag Bag says in Pirkei Avot 5:22, “Hafoch ba vehafoch ba dekula ba,” “Turn it over and over, for all is within it,” he’s reflecting on the inherently multivocal nature of Torah.

https://prizmah.org/teaching-seventy-faces-torah

The verb to grow old is sav (סב), from Aramaic but is related to the word(s) linked above. From sav are the words for grandfather and grandmother.

Gray hair, wisdom, sage advice, grandparents, patience - especially with the grandchildren. All interrelated concepts.

===============

Again with the concept of turning is the word face:

The word "face", panim (פנים) is inherently plural. Its numeric value is 180, which is the number used idiomatically to express something turned completely over. In fact,

פָּנִים pânîym, paw-neem'; plural (but always as singular) of an unused noun פָּנֶה pâneh; from H6437; the face (as the part that turns); used in a great variety of applications (literally and figuratively)

Pun, of uncertain origin

Seriously?! Panim (face), is from panah (to turn), which in turn is a corner (pinah), which is from pen (meaning to turn), which leads to another corner, which comes from here, because who (hu) is he, right from the mouth (peh), because of the turning corners of the mouth...

A pun *is* the turning of a word or phrase over and over and over to find what all is in it, uncovering "shiv‘im panim", 70 "pun-eem".

On that note, the word for patience is savlanut (סַבְלָנוּת). The root word is saval, meaning to suffer/carry a burden, but savlanut (patience) begins with sav lanu (סב לנו), "a grandfather for us!". It ties right in with all of the above. Patience begins with a grandfather for us:

Wisdom, and its gift of patience, means the ability to turn... into a kid again.

70, the age of turning... into a kid again.

Birthday parties.

One of the interpretations of the Messianic name Shiloh is that it reads as shai lo, "a gift for him".

Similarly, the word sheivah (for turning at the age of 70) is spelled as shai bah, "a gift in her". Wisdom (a feminine noun) gives the gift of patience. Within wisdom is a gift for the one who turns 70: patience. It's how one turns into a kid again. Because now that Israel has turned seventy, he gets a birthday present.

Shiloh: שילה
sheivah: שיבה

The red letters spell lev, heart.

Proverbs 8

1. Does not wisdom call? And understanding put forth her voice:
2. She stands at the top of high places by the way, where the paths meet:
3. She cries at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the entrance of the doors:
4. To you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man:
5. O you simple, understand wisdom; and, you fools, be you of an understanding heart:
6. Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things:

Matthew 18

1 At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?
2 And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them,
3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

Mark 10

13 And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them.
14 But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.
15 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.
16 And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.

"children of Israel"
occurs 644 times in 600 verses in the KJV

The stuff that just sits there...

I have long thought that those that enter Heaven will become children again for eternity. I find that extremely compelling, in that one would have a childlike wonder about everything. Imagine getting to learn new and wondrous things, in the presence of God, for eternity!

Thank you for your reply. There is a massive quantity of info that came out of the original track of this thread (one door opens ten more), so I'll get another post in here as soon as I can. But in reference to your comment, I'll toss this in for now:

Going up at age 13, coming back down (taking a chill pill) at age 70. 57 years in this human accountability work mode, and then it's like being released from the bondage in Egypt, because...

People always say that youth is wasted on youth. Older/wiser people don't really desire to go back to being a child (because kids are stupid), but they wish they could take what they know with them and then go back to being a child again.

Jacob's ladder, angels ascending and then descending... sulam (ladder) is also the word for a musical scale.

Concepts:

Born of water (water is a metaphor for Torah) - going forward from age 13, the age of accountability

Born of the spirit - people gain wisdom from life's experiences, and then go back from age 70, because that is the age of turning.

But it doesn't take the same amount of time. It takes 57 years to go from 13 to 70, but upon reflection, a person could convert back into a simple humble little child the same day.

This is often the theme in movies (for good or ill, as it's often corrupted into a dumb parent or evil conservative catching a much-needed clue), when the evil or cranky character has that light bulb moment and finally "gets it". Like with the Captain in the Sound of Music. There's the water scene with the rowboat, when the kids fall in and get soaked. Then the argument ensues about his attitudes. Then he hears the singing.

After hearing the music, the captian softens up and realizes the error of his ways (repents), because Maria brought music back into the house. He said he had forgotten. Saccharine sweet movie, but it sure illustrates the point. Can a nation be born in a day?! It sure can, when it hears the music of 'turning'.

This goes on and on, that's just one small example. Not enough hours in the day! That entire movie is prophetic. Lyrics, everything. There's even a grand turn about with that, because the movie is often thought of as the quintessential sappy musical. Like a pun being the lowest form of humor, the movie will have its day, because the low will be exalted, and the high will be abased.

Regarding a cornerstone... the Biblical texts don't specify whether it is a foundation stone or a capstone. One is the first, the other is the last. There's always a reason. The head of a corner is its turning point. That IS what a corner is.

An age milestone is a waymark (the word Zion is from tziyun, a waymark): head of the street corner, of turning over a new leaf, page, of starting a new chapter, etc. Even marking a peak as in going "over the hill".

Some people simply refuse to turn around when the dead end is ahead. The stone the builders refused (think wisdom) has become the head of the corner - the turning point. This is the Lord's doing, it is marvelous in our eyes (eye is the meaning of the letter ayin, 70).

It goes on.

"Blossom of snow may you bloom and grow, bloom and grow forever..."

The redemption comes through singing.

I should have clarified (because you never know around here) that Israel turning 70 is the framework for the concept of restoring order in the world through wisdom and patience, with the new found love and joy in life in the loving and caring for others, exemplified by grandparents playing with their grandchildren and having fun. It’s life back from the dead.

I am not implying that one group or another needs to get a clue about embracing certain doctrinal beliefs. That’s the old paradigm that is a big part of the strife that needs to be turned away from. A clean slate - when everyone realizes that they were *all* wrong on major points. Nobody can then say “I told you so.” There is zero redeeming value in snarky attitudes.

Another aspect of the Number 70 is found in the ancient tradition from the Talmud that says "When the wine goes in, the sectrets come out." This is based on the following pair of identities:

יַיִן Yayon / Wine = 70

סוֹד Sod / Secret = 70

It goes on...

Shabbat Shalom!

In this land, the Maker of Stars and Dust vowed to Abraham that his children would be as many as the dust of the earth and the stars of heaven. In their darkest days, they would be as the dust. But there is mercy in the numberless count of the dust. Mercy in not being able to make a full count of the fallen and remaining ignorant of that full measure of woe. Modern technologies permit us terrible estimates. Databanks store the names of millions; digital cemeteries of ghosts. But there is no counting the dust. And when we walk the length and breadth of the land, as the Maker told Abraham to do, it the dust that supports our feet, we walk in the dust of our ancestors.

Who can count the dust of Jacob

Daniel Greenfield's Memorial Day article is all about the counting or not counting the dust (עפר). It just so happens that

The age of 70 (ע) is the age of turning [gray].

gray: אפור, from ashes (afar with an alef) which is related to the word for dust (afar with an ayin).

Luke 12:6-7 Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? 7 But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.

Can these bones live, the Lord asks Ezekiel. And generations, after each slaughter, they come again, the descendants of the dead to reclaim the hills of their ancestors. Rising like the red flowers out of the soil. Like the bones out of the earth.

On the topic of rectification in the rearranging of dust, the root of the gray hair is here, in the rearranging of the letters:

Isa 61

1. The spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord has anointed me to announce good news to the humble; he has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound:
2. To proclaim an acceptable year of the Lord,

and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn:
3. To appoint to those who mourn in Zion, to give to them a garland [פאר] instead of ashes [אפר], the oil of joy instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified:
4. And they shall build the old ruins, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the ruined cities, the desolations of many generations:

Age 70 (ע), the time for turning.

To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heaven

A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep

To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heaven

A time to build up, a time to break down
A time to dance, a time to mourn
A time to cast away stones, a time to gather stones together..

The Byrds - Turn! Turn! Turn!

It's what Solomon said. Solomon, famous for being the king of wisdom.

Age for a child becoming a man: 13
Age for a man becoming a child: 70

One direction (from below, and then going up, takes 57 years). The other direction (from above, going down... only takes a moment... of reflection).

Matthew 18

1 At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?
2 And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them,
3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted [turned], and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
5 And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.
6 But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

Verse 3-5 are like the images of the grandparents sitting down in the sand with the kids, or raising them up to play with and hug them.

At the same time

Compare what was going on in chapter 17. "The children are free". And lest we offend them...

Ha, remember what Uncle Buck did? He flicked that quarter to pay for treatment...

"Because they're all good kids, until dried out, brain-dead scags like you drag them down and convince them they're no good..."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEt5dEOcW0I

So much for the Establishment, no matter which one. Anita had been an educator for 31 point 3 years.

Come to think of it, Jesus was last seen in the Temple at age 12, then no mention of him until he 'arrived' at 30. The Temple was destroyed in AD 70.

Thirty is the age for koach, strength/power:

Luke 4

14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.
15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.
16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read...

See, right on time. Joseph also arrived at age 30 to teach and get to work.

Neighborhood Bully - Bob Dylan

Well, the neighborhood bully, he’s just one man
His enemies say he’s on their land
They got him outnumbered about a million to one
He got no place to escape to, no place to run
He’s the neighborhood bully.

The neighborhood bully he just lives to survive
He’s criticized and condemned for being alive
He’s not supposed to fight back, he’s supposed to have thick skin
He’s supposed to lay down and die when his door is kicked in
He’s the neighborhood bully.

The neighborhood bully been driven out of every land
He’s wandered the earth an exiled man
Seen his family scattered, his people hounded and torn
He’s always on trial for just being born
He’s the neighborhood bully.

Well, he knocked out a lynch mob, he was criticized
Old women condemned him, said he should apologize
Then he destroyed a bomb factory, nobody was glad
The bombs were meant for him. He was supposed to feel bad
He’s the neighborhood bully.

Well, the chances are against it, and the odds are slim
That he’ll live by the rules that the world makes for him
‘Cause there’s a noose at his neck and a gun at his back
And a license to kill him is given out to every maniac
He’s the neighborhood bully.

Well, he got no allies to really speak of
What he gets he must pay for, he don’t get it out of love
He buys obsolete weapons and he won’t be denied
But no one sends flesh and blood to fight by his side
He’s the neighborhood bully.

Well, he’s surrounded by pacifists who all want peace
They pray for it nightly that the bloodshed must cease
Now, they wouldn’t hurt a fly. To hurt one they would weep
They lay and they wait for this bully to fall asleep
He’s the neighborhood bully.

Every empire that’s enslaved him is gone
Egypt and Rome, even the great Babylon
He’s made a garden of paradise in the desert sand
In bed with nobody, under no one’s command
He’s the neighborhood bully.

Now his holiest books have been trampled upon
No contract that he signed was worth that what it was written on
He took the crumbs of the world and he turned it into wealth
Took sickness and disease and he turned it into health
He’s the neighborhood bully.

What’s anybody indebted to him for?
Nothing, they say. He just likes to cause war
Pride and prejudice and superstition indeed
They wait for this bully like a dog waits for feed
He’s the neighborhood bully.

What has he done to wear so many scars?
Does he change the course of rivers? Does he pollute the moon and stars?
Neighborhood bully, standing on the hill
Running out the clock, time standing still
Neighborhood bully.

Thirty is the age for koach, strength/power:
_________________________________________
Was 30 actually known as the age of koach, strength and power? I know it was the age for becoming a priest, and have thought that’s why at least in part Jesus began His ministry at that age, but I went looking to just be sure I hadn’t misread the part about priests needing to be 30, and came across this interesting article:

http://www.jpost.com/Blogs/Truth-Beyond-Price/Holy-Hebrew-Arithmetic-What-Age-was-Jesus-when-he-became-Teacher-Priest-542343

I don’t know if I agree with its every conclusion, but it makes many very interesting points. It says that the Theophilus to whom Luke wrote was the high priest of the time, and it discusses the office of sagan/segan, the deputy to the high priest, called a sagan in Hebrew and segan in Aramaic (which got me reading about both and about a little about Carl Sagan). I didn’t know there was such an office. Then it talks about how Joseph, Jesus’ father, was called a tekton in the New Testament, and this writer says that wouldn’t have meant to the Jews “carpenter” but one who was a teacher. I haven’t finished the article yet but it makes some interesting points for looking into.

I've been so busy - I haven't had a chance to read your link, but thank you. I'll have time this evening. As to your question:

Was 30 actually known as the age of koach

Yes, this was the word used in the quote from Pirkei Avot:

He [Yehudah ben Teima] used to say: Five years [is the age] for [the study of] Scripture, Ten [is the age] for [the study of] Mishnah, Thirteen [is the age] for [observing] commandments, Fifteen [is the age] for [the study of] Talmud, Eighteen [is the age] for the [wedding] canopy, Twenty [is the age] for pursuit, Thirty [is the age] for [full] strength [כֹּחַ, koach], Forty [is the age] for understanding, Fifty [is the age] for [giving] counsel, Sixty [is the age] for mature age, Seventy [is the age] for a hoary head, Eighty [is the age] for [superadded] strength, Ninety [is the age] for [a] bending [stature], One hundred, is [the age at which one is] as if dead, passed away, and ceased from the world.

koach

Compare the word used in the Greek:

Luke 4:14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.
