The problem of alcohol and drug addiction has reached epidemic proportions in the United States and around the world. Alcoholism runs rampant across the globe, drug abuse continues to consume its victims, and addiction to prescription drugs appears to be at an all time high. Many rehabilitation facilities have waiting lists for admittance, detoxification centers abound, the morgue slabs are full, and funeral homes continue to profit on the crisis of addiction stalking both old and young alike. Is there an answer? Is there a remedy to this destructive force that has been unleashed upon our planet?

It’s only been around for thousands of years. It affects more people now because their are more people on the planet, and more drugs available.

Whether it’s a sin is for God to decide, case by case.

It’s not a disease...sex, drugs, alcohol, video games, porn...these are choices on giving in to temptation...God makes it clear that He always gives us a way out...He says to flee, He says He wont allow more than we can bear. It is hard to fight off these, but we can if we choose.

The sin begets the disease. Much like VD.

“Addiction: Disease or Sin?”

Often starts out as the latter and becomes the former. Addiction is the devils work of that there is no doubt.

Sin for those who know they get wicked when they’re sloshed or otherwise chemically altered. The disease story never made sense to me. Allergy maybe, or accustomization. Doing for the body what it ought to be able to do for itself, until it can’t anymore, and might need a hand to get things normal again. I wonder if it’s an insurance issue, that it takes the disease label to get recovery paid for.

A sinful disease. Doesn’t really matter about symantics. Many folks are addicted and cannot stop on their own. Treatment centers have been full for ages. The drug of choice just seems to change.

Because it’s neither.

Addiction is a spiritual battle with one’s own dark side.

Talking about addiction to morphine derivatives it can be either/or.

I was just told recently after my hip replacement that current research shows that people taking morphine derivatives for real pain (surgery, cancer, etc, etc) *can* become addicted.Previous assumptions were that such people wouldn't become addicted.

OTOH some addicts are just weak, immoral punks.

I have taken morphine derivatives a few times in my life for surgeries.

Never occurred to be to want more when the pain was gone.

Personal Theory: this drama about painkillers is to push unhealthy pain-ridden baby boomers into checking out early.
