Not so much a disease like Polio or Lymes disease. More like diabetes. I understand questioning the labels though. Bottom line is addicts are unable to stop without help. Death or jail then ensues. It becomes a medical condition over time.

Absolutely! But it only works if the individual wants to quit, you can not force sobriety on an individual. I’ve been helping drug and alcohol addicted Vet’s for several years now. I use the basic 12 Steps of Alcoholic’s Anonymous with a twist or two. About a 60% success rate for those that complete the Steps. One needs to also remember that there’s a big difference between physical and mental addiction. Personally I think mental addiction is the hardest to stop.

Ditto...I've had a half dozen painful procedures on my hips including having both hips replaced.Also had hand surgery a few years ago.Still not addicted.
However,there are patients who have serious,long term and non-fixable pain.Cancer and serious car accidents are two examples that come to mind.I wouldn't bet my last nickel against *those* patients,over time,becoming addicted.
Some guy who gets clean and sober in the rooms but now wants to make money off of what wa freely given to him. That is the real sin
The disease label started with the legalization lobby.
It’s part of that movement. First decriminalize, then move to legalize. It’s worked with pot.

If it’s not contagious, it’s not a disease.
Some physical diseases are genetic, but in general, addictive personalities have TONS of baggage and the addiction is a person’s coping mechanism to deal with pain.
Many people have been delivered from addictions, without even trying, when they accept Christ. It just happens. When they find Christ, they find they don’t need their props any more.
That puts it in the sin category.
Addiction is a disease caused by a long series of very poor decisions.
Who cares ? The alcoholic processes alcohol differently than the normal drinker
I have a friend who has had two mastectomies. She became addicted to the prescription drugs she was given for pain.
Is she a sinner for that?
Or are the prescribing doctors sinners?
She has never harmed anyone else as a result of this addiction. She had to go through an intensive program to get off the drug. She is now going through three surgeries on her back. The nerve damage in her back was caused by the painkillers.
What does she do about the pain this time?
I think that is the wrong question. Instead:
“Does the addiction make a person weak, or do they become an addict because they are already weak?”
While this sounds callous, almost the same answer can be used.
In either case, disease or weakness can make a person vulnerable to addictive things, but personal strength can make it harder to both become an addictive and to stay addicted.
So instead look to that which strengthens a person, either a burst of strength, or a long steady improvement in strength.

it’s not hat at their bodies do not process alcohol like a normal person, it is that their brains do not process decisions like a normal person.
That is true for classic “maintenance” alcoholics. It’s not true of binge and recreational drinkers who go too far but have no physical addiction to alcohol.
I know a maintenance drinker. He sips starting about Noon and is drunk (but always home) by 7PM, 7 days a week. He worked his entire career this way. No DUIs or other problems.
Binge drinkers are much more dangerous.
*OTOH some addicts are just weak.*
The immoral punk part comes after the addition.
I have not found anyone who has an addictive personality who didn't grow up with a lot baggage, usually bad relationships at home.
I feel sorry for those who are in those situations. Not that I'd trust an addict as far as I could throw them, but something happened that contributed to them being that way and there but for the grace of God go I.
And each of us has particular weaknesses that are all our own.
I have a friend who was a compulsive gambler and when he accepted Christ, he vowed to God to never gamble again.
That is not something that ever even came close to tempting me.
If you never take that first drink, you will never know if you are an alcoholic or not.
It’s like Russian Roulet. If you never pull the trigger, you will never know if that spin was empty or not.
I have yet to meet a person, smart or stupid, who did not know that was the choice before taking the first drink. Most took the drink and took the chances anyway. Some of us have never pulled the trigger and will never know.
