I have taken morphine derivatives a few times in my life for surgeries.
Never occurred to be to want more when the pain was gone.
Personal Theory: this drama about painkillers is to push unhealthy pain-ridden baby boomers into checking out early.

Ditto...I've had a half dozen painful procedures on my hips including having both hips replaced.Also had hand surgery a few years ago.Still not addicted.
However,there are patients who have serious,long term and non-fixable pain.Cancer and serious car accidents are two examples that come to mind.I wouldn't bet my last nickel against *those* patients,over time,becoming addicted.
I've gone through four major surgeries. Got off the pain meds.each time. I wisely sought help from professionals each time, as well.
I’ve had morphine and other pain pills over my lifetime and like you never thought to take any longer than was needed. In fact I was very glad not to have to take them.
I just think it’s easier for people to blame it on anything other than their own choice to continue taking them when they don’t need them. Probably shame and a host of other things come into the picture rather than admit they messed up.
