The Catholic Church is in de facto schism: What’s to be done?

Why is there confusion in the Catholic Church over Amoris Laetitia, and what consequences does it have for Church unity? I argue here that the confusion is ultimately over two de fide dogmas of Christian faith and that one consequence of the confusion is de facto schism within the Catholic Church.

When de fide (“of the faith”) is used in Catholic theology to designate a doctrine, it signifies a truth that pertains to Divine Revelation. The term Divine Revelation refers to truths by which God chose to reveal himself and his will to humanity in order to reconcile the world to himself so men and women might live united with him imperfectly in this world and, after death and judgment, perfectly with him in the Kingdom. Thus, the Church considers de fide doctrines necessary for salvation. Their status in Catholic teaching is irreformable. And their mode of proclamation is infallible.

This essay has three aims. First, it introduces and explains the theological concept of “secondary objects of infallibility” and shows how almost all of the truths pertaining to sexual matters taught by the Catholic Church belong to the category of secondary objects of infallibility, and so are rightly designated de fide doctrines. Second, it argues that beginning with the intra-ecclesial dissent from the papal encyclical Humanae Vitae, the Catholic Church has existed in a grave state of disunity over de fide doctrines, and that this disunity is deepened by the problems caused by Amoris Laetitia. Finally, it offers practical advice to the hierarchy and laity for responding to the crisis.

It's a pipe-dream to think or suggest that Bergoglio retract AL and actually defend Catholicism. That's just not his M.O.

The best thing the laity can do is pray for an end to the current pontificate and find a non Novus Ordo church.

Too many rules and regulations causing people to lose focus on the message of Christ. Catholic Church members needs to remember the reason why Christ came to this earth, and listen to our Pope!

For God's sake, listen to yourself! How in the world have we come to that Catholics are actually saying such things!!!

Popes have always conferred with the teaching authority of the Church before publishing an encyclical, that is until four years ago.

Francis had questionnaires sent out and people filled them out. (Funny, I know of no one who even saw one of them.) And then he got with his buds and they decided what was what. Not the Magisterium.

And then, he got AL written up, but it was never correctly edited, meaning it was not passed back to the Magisterium, to make sure everything lined up with Church teaching.

What has happened is cause for alarm.

So your answer is to ignore the words of Jesus and His teachings.

So you feel that following God’s will is too complicated.

Just say it. He is a heretic. He should resign (sooner, not later) in disgrace and go out into the darkness from whence he came.

Sad to say, Pope Francis has gone bad.

You’re overreacting. The poster was accurate about Pope Francis. The chances that the current Pontiff will do even 10% of what the author of the article proposes are epsilon above zero. Perhaps the poster you object to could have written it this way (which is what I believe he meant): “We should pray that the current pontificate ends without further damage to the Church.” That’s me prayer.

“...the pope is a hard core Marxist first and a Catholic a distant second...”

I do not believe this Pope is a true Catholic. Any Pope who installs a statue of Martin Luther in the Vatican is not Catholic.

As the article mentions Luther and others I have a question.

Does the RCC allow divorce for the cause of unchastity?

How does this writing by the pope deal with the individual who lusts after someone?

I agree with you. He’s a liberal politician more than a spiritual leader. About the only difference between the pope and the liberal wing of the Democrat party is on reproductive issues

It is the position of the Roman Catholic Church that a valid marriage is only ended by the death of one of the participants.

I do not know how this writing deals with those who lust; it is a historical teaching of the church that lust is a grave offense, equivalent to adultery.

The reason I asked is that the NT does provide an allowance for divorce in the event of unchastity.

8He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses permitted you to divorce your wives; but from the beginning it has not been this way. 9“And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.” Matthew 19:8 NASB

Sure looks like Jesus is allowing divorce in the event of adultery committed by an unfaithful spouse.

I believe this was what Joseph was thinking when he found out Mary was pregnant. He must have thought she had been fooling around on him...but we know that isn't the case.

“And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”

That could be interpreted as justification for solicitation of prostitution.

Tell the hooker "We must be married; relations outside of marriage are sinful". She says "Yeah, whatever. That'll be another 20 bucks". Then, when she moves on to her next customer, rise up in indignation and proclaim "Thou are an adulteress; I divorce thee".

Don't forget "Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder."

Sounds more like Islam.

Maybe he didn’t have the address of the Magisterium.
