When I saw what Francis had said, I thought it was a very strange, over-the-top shot at any part of the press that isn't in the pocket of someone to his liking. It wouldn't have been quite as shocking coming from some German trying to make a point in 1525 (Martin Luther and Cardinal Albrecht of Mainz had contemporary Teutonic vulgarities down pat), but it is from out in left (!) field today.

Odd, and - like much of Francis' pontificate - unsettling.
