Mr De Blasio, a first-term Democrat, told the Associated Press on Wednesday that for the first time he will take part in the parade along Manhattan's Fifth Avenue on March 17.
He skipped the parade in 2014, when no gay groups were allowed to openly march, and he skipped again last year, when only one small lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender group was permitted.
"The St Patrick's Day parade is a New York City tradition, but for years Irish LGBT New Yorkers could not show their pride," Mr De Blasio told the AP. "Finally, they can celebrate their heritage by marching in a parade that now represents progress and equality."
This year, more than 300 people will march under the banner of the Lavender and Green Alliance, an Irish LGBT group that had worked for 25 years to reverse the ban and, when those efforts stalled, founded a competing parade, called St Patrick's For All, which marches every year in Queens and allows all groups to participate.
"Our hearts will be dancing," said Brendan Fay, the head of the group.
Mr Fay gave credit to Mr De Blasio, who was the first mayor in more than 20 years to refuse to participate in the Manhattan parade, saying his boycott put pressure on the parade's organisers to change their policies.
Everybody else should boycott it.

The Catholic Church should hold an event that showcases the faith and heroic life of St. Patrick. Ditch the parade. It’s been given over to a reprobate mind.

I will not be present...although I do live in SW Colorado...but if I lived in NYC, I would not be present.

Since ANYTHING other than heterosexuality is INHERENTLY DISORDERED, this shouldn't even be an issue.
The Church has in times past allowed lay cardinals. Do you suppose that Comrade Francis is contemplating changing Deblahblah’s name and title from Comrade William DeBlasio to William Cardinal DeBlasio? I think he was impressed when Francis went to imprisoned Cuba to glad hand the Castro boys when Comrade DeBlahBlah was only able to honeymoon there with his black “ex lesbian” wife. Obviously Francis is higher on the progressive food chain than even Comrade DeBlahBlah.
Next up: Changing the name of the parade to the "Saint" Harvey Milk Day parade and move the date to November 27, the anniversary of his departure from earthly life.
Pride is a sin along with other things.
