The video below boasts, “America loves Italy” and features a Fiat car driving through American towns with Italian names.
If that is the case then America loves Catholicism even more, since thousands of towns and places are named for Catholic saints, themes, and objects. Consider the following:
In California: San Diego, San Miguel, San Francisco, San Bernadino, San Clemente, San Luis Obispo, San Jose, San Rafael, Santa Maria, Santa Barbara, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Los Angeles (aka Nuestra Senora de los Angeles de la Porciuncula), Santa Cruz, Santa Clarita, Sacramento, San Joaquin Valley, San Gabriel Mountains
In Texas: Corpus Christi, San Antonio
In Florida: St. Augustine, St. Petersburg, Port St. Lucie, Santa Rosa Island, St. George Island, Port St. Joe.
And these are just three states! The map at the upper right (which you can click to enlarge) shows thousands of cities, towns, and places named for saints and things Catholic.
What’s in a name? Usually history, honor, and respect. If so, then Catholicism has left its mark on this country whether the secularists like it or not. I wonder when and if they will sue to remove these sorts of names as St Petersburg, Russia once became Leningrad.
To me your post is another example of a catholic pulling something out of context for which there is little or no support.
No, it is actually about promoting the cult of Roman Catholicism. It does nothing to promote the Gospel, nor does it meet the need to promote Christ, not some organization which is solely based on manmade rules and theories (though the blind can't see that!).
Nice try, again! God will be mocked!!!
Mark 16: 14 Later Jesus appeared to the Eleven as they were eating; he rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who had seen him after he had risen.
15 He said to them, Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. ...
Those are more indications of settlement patterns; there is nothing to indicate “America” as a whole has any use for Catholicism. Long before “gay marriage”, our infatuation with divorce and abortion showed how much Catholicism played a role in contemporary culture. You can watch a dozen “Christmas” specials without a single mention of Jesus Christ.
Ft. Caroline preceded St. Augustine. It was Protestant. French Huguenot. Wiped out by Catholics from what became St. Augustine.
I’m not sure, but Maryland should have a lot of Catholic type names.
FWIW, Hitler’s train car was named “Amerika”. I don’t think it indicated love.
Then we must really love Indians
I would think so too.
Maybe something like a Carrollton after the first Catholic Bishop in the United States — just a guess.
I don’t believe God is mocked by these names.
Claiming the Indians as catholic is.....problematic at best. While spaniards rolling into Aztec areas is most analogous to the armies liberating Nazi death camps, the Indians were not exactly free will converts.
I??
How about the author? I just posted it.
About half of Catholics vote democrat. the split in 2012 was 50-48. I wouldn't say rat victory margin that fluctuates from a few points to negative indicates that an entire group "doesn't love America."
And eagleone, the freedom of speech clause protects your freedom from the government, it has nothing to do with whatever restrictions FR may put in place. I'm not saying you can't comment on this thread, but I felt the need to clarify this pretty basic fact.
Of course, when the Mexican government liquidated the ranchos the Indians slaughtered hundreds of thousands of head of cattle in revenge and subsequently, a lot of them starved to death. Oops.
I've read the bleached bones of the slaughtered cattle provided a steady supply of fencing material for decades thereafter.
. I could also ask why was this article even posted if not an effort to promote catholicism.
I'm saying, and it's supported by evidence, that catholics have in the majority of presidential elections, supported liberal candidates. Catholics voted for JFK about like blacks for Obama. Again look at the northeast....heavy catholic.....heavy liberal.
Regarding the free speech thing.....if you're afraid of contrary comments on a topic then one, don't post it, or two use the caucus thread to limit who can..
The Spanish made huge numbers of converts. The missionaries - Jesuit, Dominican or Franciscan - would preach to them. The Indians did not have to accept the preaching, but they had to listen to it. If they didn’t accept it (the Hopi never did) they had to execute a treaty with Spain. They were then allowed to live as they had before unless they attacked the Spanish. Generally, they didn’t, because they got some protection from other hostile Indian tribes.
There were problems with civil governors who felt that all the migratory tribes should be settled. Some could be settled and benefitted by it; others wouldn’t, and the missionaries stayed with them but then often died in attacks on the civil authorities. This happened in several places in new Mexico and Arizona.
It can also be seen by the many football players who suddenly are making the Sign of the Cross on the field for no apparent reason but to draw attention to themselves. Some even making it with their left hand.
More power to you dude. Here’s hoping that it benefits you.
Correlation does not imply causation. Delaware and Virginia have very few Catholics, and both are liberal states. Ohio and Oregan have quite a few Evangelicals. Texas is loaded with Catholics. Race is a far better indicator of voting patterns than religion. If you insist on using religion, for most Christians frequency of attendance is the best indicator, excluding blacks who vote D regardless of attendance rate (oh look, that race variable again.)
Too hard to read the map even enlarged. We have a few. St. Donatus is one. Near Dubuque, there were tons of Catholic settlers and, of course, other parts of the state. We have St. Ambrose University and all the Catholic churches and schools have either a saint or something associated with Catholicism.
“None of those cities are Italian in name or history.”
Maybe not, but the continent and the nation are since America is named after Amerigo Vespucci.
St.Augustine
Port St. Joe
St. Petersburg
Port St. Lucie
St. George Island
Steinhatchee (well it begins with St)
St. Marys
Santa Rosa Beach
St. Vincent National Wildlife Refuge
St. Mark’s
St. Cloud
San Carlos Park
