New childrens book is a gentle introduction that there is no dog but dog. For nearly two thousand years, religious groups have held a monopoly on how to teach morals to young children. Now Me & Dog, a new childrens book by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Gene Weingarten and illustrator Eric Shansbyboth of The Washington Poststeps into the competitive arena of nighttime reads (6-8 p.m. division) with an atheist lullaby.
Cue sincere hand wringing: Wont somebody please think of the children?
The setting for this shameless piece of atheist propaganda (you can quote me on that, religious right) is a walk between a young boy named Sid and his dog, Murphy. The young boy accidentally treads on the dogs tail, causing the dog to instantly apologize for whatever he had done to deserve this punishment. The childs realization that the dog thinks hes a superhero leads to a fun, beautifully illustrated exploration of the problems of the canine condition. They think were all-powerful deities when actually were just a bunch of klutzes.
Weingarten told the Daily Beast that the book is part parable, part narrative, adding, I dont want to sound messianic, but I think there is a need for this book. There are hundreds of childrens books written with the intention of helping toddlers take their first wobbly steps on the straight and narrow, but there are no books about atheism for children. This book seeks to fill that void (although arguably atheist kids should get used to nothingness sooner rather than later). Its the antidote to sentimental stories about people riding butterflies in heaven. Its Everybody Poops for the humanist set.
Like all good scripture, Me & Dog can be read literally as well as metaphorically.

Yep.
And when that atheist dies, who will answer his question, “Are you there, Dog?”
.. or should he have been asking “God” that question all of his life?
I’m sure they’ll sell tens upon tens of books.
But in the story the child mistaken for God- exists.
Huh?
“You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.”. (St. Augustine)
I couldn’t get past the name of the author of this article - Candida Moss - really? Sounds like a horrible yeast infection.
And then there is this gratuitous/insulting statement:
“For religious parents concerned that teaching humanism to kids might turn them into psychopaths, this is a very gentle book. Theres no genocide, rape, or mutilation here. For that you can stick with Bible. (For what its worth, the early Church father John Chrysostom recommends that you begin with the stories of violent divine judgment and circle back to Jesus in due course).”
There already is one - one that this pales in comparison to.
The most pathetic thing about atheists is their deep need for Christian disapproval, when in fact we don’t care what they think or do.
The book would have exactly the same value under atheism if the child set up a gulag for dogs. Literally no difference.
ya, sounds bad.
If Christians in modern times are supposed to bear the smears of Old Testament levels of faith as well as what anyone calling himself a Christian happened to do... well, atheists, what do you think about the atheistic Communist regimes around the world?
Some Christians get snotty that atheists are mucking up their society, which is an ungodly take. These atheists are pitiable bundles wrapped up in their own selves and any knowledgeable Christian will pity them.
True enough. Have they ever complained about the criticism of people who believe in leprechauns?
Now the author should do another book with a boy and his dog and a cat who doesn’t think the boy is a god.
Luke 17:2 It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin.
Speaking of children who want to come to the Lord. Of which some may be in atheist households. (”God has no grandchildren” as the adage sometimes goes.)
God the Father becomes very ANGRY at such fools.
