The top legislative body of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) voted Thursday to redefine Christian marriage in the church constitution as the union of "two people" instead of only "a man and a woman."
The amendment requires approval from a majority of the 172 regional presbyteries, which will vote on the change over the next year. But in a separate vote that will take effect immediately, the Presbyterian General Assembly allowed ministers to preside at gay weddings in states where gay marriage is legal. Nineteen states and the District of Columbia recognize same-sex marriage.
Alex McNeill, executive director of More Light Presbyterians, a gay advocacy group, said the decisions Thursday were "an answer to many prayers" of same-sex couples.
The conservative Presbyterian Lay Committee decried the votes in Detroit as an "abomination."
"The General Assembly has committed an express repudiation of the Bible, the mutually agreed upon Confessions of the PCUSA, thousands of years of faithfulness to God's clear commands and the denominational ordination vows of each concurring commissioner," the committee said in a statement.

My own United Methodist Church continues to fight Jezebel and Thyatira....here’s hoping there’s a split.
We are at the “Joshua and Golden Calf” moment.
Well, watch their attendance plummet.
Aaron was no great help at the golden calf moment. What did he say, something like “we threw all this gold in the fire and look what came out.”
My United Methdist Church has gone from about 15 million to 7.5 million just for arguing over this stuff. They yearn for irrelevance.
Any church accepting Homo marriage should be left immediately. those that remain are the problem and should be treated accordingly. It really is that simple.
What part of the term “abomination” don’t Presbyterians understand?
I agree with you.
If they can’t see the difference between a man + woman and a man+man, then they have left the Creator.
John Knox is spinning in his grave.
Time to split. Vomit-worthy
Yup. It’s binary. there is no other correct answer.
To me it looks more like “Here be your gods!” moment when Israel and Judah split. Many people in the Northern Kingdom moved into Judah.
Close friends of mine just left the UMC. They are both roughly 50 and had been lifelong Methodists, but they said they could no longer subject their children to what was being taught in their church. Most Methodists I know seem much more conservative and traditional than their leaders. I’m not sure if that’s as true everywhere as it is in Tennessee and Mississippi.
It’s the PCUSA, but my sense is that they simply cannot be believers in Jesus Christ. They believe their job is to perpetuate the ‘myth of Jesus’ as an incentive for groups to work in soup lines and so others can give them a salary for running community activities and weekly poetry readings.
There are some truly bad Methodist churches, and some of them are in Tennessee, although Tennessee tends to be better on average than other places.
I really hope to hold the line against the pro-homosexuality group again in 2016, and the frustrated sexually promiscuous crowd cause a church split.
Good point. I would welcome a split myself.
It is total amazing that it took Christian theologians/ministers a couple thousand years to discover that same sex marriage is a good and proper thing. I guess it took the help of heathens to get them to see the light.
“...the Presbyterian General Assembly allowed ministers to preside at gay weddings in states where gay marriage is legal... Alex McNeill, executive director of More Light Presbyterians, a gay advocacy group, said the decisions Thursday were “an answer to many prayers” of same-sex couples.”
Except the gays members that live in states where it isn’t legally recognized. Imagine belonging to a religious group that believes that indeed you can be married, but only if the state you are in first agrees. I would think that is pretty lame.
Freegards
And pretty much only in irrelevant mainline western Christianity.
