Social pressures force Tunisia women to fake virginity

Tunis (AFP) - It happens every April ahead of the summer marriage season, says Tunisian gynaecologist Faouzi Hajri -- desperate brides-to-be beg for surgery to make them "virgins" again for their wedding night.

Fearing rejection as "used" women in a conservative Muslim country where premarital sex is nevertheless common, Tunisian women are increasingly opting for the sort of surgery offered by Doctor Hajri.

But it doesn't stop them regretting the need to convince new husbands of their purity.

"A woman's honour shouldn't be determined by a few drops of blood," says Salima, a 32-year-old who admits she had the operation so that her "honour" was not in question on her wedding night.

It is easy for a woman to have her hymen surgically reconstructed in Tunisia.

The routine hospital operation takes around 30 minutes and costs from 400 to 700 euros ($550 to $960), with a less permanent version needing to be done within a week of the wedding, while the stitches hold.

"The number of women resorting to hymenoplasty or hymenorrhaphy (as the operations are known) has gone up a lot in recent years," says Moncef Kamel, a doctor in the southern island of Djerba.

If sex is no big deal, then why would these women go through such lengths to lie?

“Didn’t know you could put that toothpaste back in the tube.”

Yes, doctors had been doing that for years primarily in Southeast Asian countries as far back as the late 60s/early70s. A stitch is taken in the hymen area. When intercourse occurs the stitch breaks and causes about the same blood-flow as a legitimate hymen.

I was always amazed that Turkish prostitutes only allowed anal sex to preserve their virginity. That fact was one of my WTF moments in the USAF.

Not too long ago, that was the case in the USA too.

If not fake it, then at least claim it....

I'm just amazed how women of any country mutilate their bodies for men.

Anyway, on the wedding night, the new husband asks his wife how was it? She answers he's the best she has ever had.

OOOOPS!

At the risk of sounding like a whiny liberal, it is totally unfair to a girl who has never had sex to be accused of not being a virgin because her hymen was ruptured somehow other than sex.

The standard for virginity being an intact hymen is ridiculous.

This article is another example of why that standard is wrong.

Having their hymen surgically restored does not equate to a woman never having had sex before. It does not make one a virgin. Once you’ve had sex; you’re not a virgin. Period. End of story.
