Social Justice: “We’re telling you to do what we say Jesus said and having the government make sure you do it.”

Conservative economists, from Roepke to De Sota, have pointed out that free trade alone is not enough to insure properity for any level of the economic population. Only settled property rights and the ability to own, transfer and moneterize property can make a free trading society a prosperous society, and one that is prosperous on all levels.

Economic disparagement of “capitalism” was an emphasis of Marx and Engels who in some ways brought the term into common usage. Physical and incorporable property rights and freedom to trade, buy and sell where the touchstones of freedom at the time of our founding.

What clergyman of Christian faith does not admonish us to stop our focus on our wealth as individuals and feed the sick and poor? Prosperity is not condemned, the greed and love of money is what is condemned.

It was a comment more on the Church’s hypocrisy in calling on us to end poverty by redistributing while it sits on massive amounts of dough, and very likely increases its worth every day through investments. Recall, for example, Banco D’Ambrosiano.

I was saying, “You first.”
