South Africa's Nobel peace laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu says he will never worship a "homophobic God" and will rather go to hell.
The retired archbishop was speaking at the launch of a UN-backed campaign in South Africa to promote gay rights.
Despite sex-same relationships being legal in South Africa, it had some of the worst cases of homophobic violence, UN human rights chief Navi Pillay said.
Archbishop Tutu, 81, is a long-standing campaigner for gay rights.

He retired as Archbishop of Cape Town in 1996, but has remained the moral conscience of the nation, correspondents say.
Same-sex relationships are illegal in more than a third of countries around the world and punishable by death in five, Ms Pillay said.
In Africa, homosexual acts are still a crime in 38 countries, according to the rights group Amnesty International.
"I would refuse to go to a homophobic heaven. No, I would say sorry, I mean I would much rather go to the other place," Archbishop Tutu said at the launch of the Free and Equal campaign in Cape Town.
"I would not worship a God who is homophobic and that is how deeply I feel about this."(continued)

Go to Hell.
I doubt that the Creator of the Universe is anything-phobic. Its bad enough to apply the homophobic tag to people who are not afraid of homosexuality, but to apply it to God is just stupid. Even for a Leftist who pretends to be a Man of God.
What other of G-d’s rules do you not wish to follow, Mr. Tutu?
He should have a talk with his good buddy Mugabe.
” .... rather go to hell.”

It’s really of his choosing.
Perhaps he should: Zimbabwe: Mugabe Threatens to Behead Homosexuals
Tutu must wear a Tutu.....what an IDIOT.
Satan said words of similar effect.
Hey Tutu or Fufu, whatever you call yourself. I have no doubt that Hell & the Lake of Fire is your destination throughout eternity. Be not deceived, God is not mocked! You will roast in Hell forever, for your rebellion & lack of salvation. The words that you speak so arrogantly is this life will haunt you & echo back to you throughout eternity in Hell.
He probably should pack light weight summer clothing for his final trip.
Who thinks God is afraid of gays? He loves them and died for them as he did all sinners.
Does Desmond Tutu think that God has sin-ophobia? God isn't afraid of anything. He's not afraid of sin but hates sin like he does cancer. Is God cancer-phobic?
"Homophobic" is another confused oxymoron like "gay rights." It confuses fear with hate and confuses the sin with the sinner. Satan wants the world (and as many Christians as possible) to think that God is angry with and hates the gays because of their perverse life style. But Satan is a liar.
The cross of Jesus Christ was the only way sin could be separated from the sinner. Because of the incredible sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross ALL of EVERYONE'S sins past, present, and future were completely and fully judged by God the Father on his beloved Son Jesus Christ because of his great love for us. On the cross, God was able to separate out and fully judge destructive and deadly sin which he hates while preserving the sinner in the person Jesus Christ.
God isn't afraid of sodomy, he hates sodomy. God doesn't hate or fear the sodomite, he loves him and gave his only Son for him.
South Africa is much like another country in the Southern Hemisphere, Argentina, which sank from a relatively prosperous standing into a morass of social despair and endless unrest. And for much the same reason - endless agitation for “social justice” and a redress of all real and imagined wrongs by the “rich”.
Argentina and South Africa have traveled somewhat different paths, in that South Africa has not had anybody of quite the resolve of Eva Peron to personally drain the national treasury, but the same feelings of “us against them” were exploited to the fullest. South Africa has managed to stay above insolvency just because of the extraction of gold and other minerals, keeping them in a relative positive balance of trade. Argentina lost its dominance of trade in processed beef quite early on, when the First World War ended, and foreign exchange dried up.
“Progressive” policies in both countries led to their present loss of national focus. And both countries give us a preview of what lies in wait for the territory once known as “the United States of America”.
Hell is exactly where necktie Tutu is going.
So the glory of heaven...or someone’s butt crack....and the butt crack wins every time. How special!
This clown is an “archbishop” and sounds like he’s never read the Bible. Just wondering if he bought his vestments in a surplus store, but just in case, he should read Romans 1:2627, 1 Corinthians 6:910, and 1 Timothy 1:910. Won’t bother mentioning Leviticus because some Christians think it’s no longer binding (protip: some parts arent’t but some parts still are).
The poorest and most violent African countries are also the most liberal. Coincidence? I think not!
This makes me very, very sad.
God will surely give Tutu his wish.
