Cardinals GM Orders Cross Honoring Musial To Be Removed From Mound
CBS St. Louis ^ | July 8, 2013 | none

The St. Louis Cardinals general manager ordered a cross carved into the pitcher’s mound to be removed following a fan complaining about the religious symbol to local newspapers.

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak asked the grounds crew to remove the cross and not to put the religious symbol on the mound again after learning of the practice from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

“It’s not just club policy to be putting religious symbols on the playing field or throughout the ballpark,” Mozeliak told the Post-Dispatch. “I didn’t ask for the reason behind it. I just asked for it to stop.”

God does not like Pirates. He does like pretty little birdies.

I would rather the curse be upon the GM than the team. The Red Sox deserved their curse; it was the owner who traded Babe Ruth. I don’t recall who caused the Cubs to be cursed, but judging by their fans, it was also well-deserved.....

I’m hoping that the pitchers do that. It should be up to the pitchers, really. You wouldn’t want it there for Sandy Koufax. But the GM shouldn’t be getting involved, either. It’s just a nice little thing that the groundskeeper was doing, and there was no publicity about it until some troublemaker saw it and was “offended”.

The Cardinal fans are probably among the best fans in baseball. They demonstrate this at each game with their vast array of Cardinal jerseys and caps. What a tribute if all the Christian fans started wearing a cross in honor of Stan the Man for the rest of the year.

Wasn’t Musial a liberal Democrat?

Very true. They fear the cross that they believe has no significance.

I have no idea what Musial’s politics were. I don’t recall ever seeing him involved with political issues, which is how it should be for athletes and entertainers.

I think he was a big Kennedy supporter. I apologize if I'm mistaken.

Supporting Kennedy in 1960? Seriously, I should dislike him because of that? That makes him a conservative Republican today.

He met Kennedy only once according to his biographer. He did take part in a celebrity tour promoting Kennedy for Prez, but it really does seem he did so more out of Catholic loyalty than keen interest in politics. He was much more noticed for his Catholicism than his politics. Given his religion, age, and military service, it’s not surprising if he was an FDR Democrat. Not many weren’t.
