"...There is still no decision on the date but the Curia has imposed a media blackout so cardinals are not allowed to give information to the press. Tensions have been rising in the past few days, leading to yesterday morning's clash between Romans and foreigners.

Yes, probably so. However, the catholic church also talks too much and so do a lot of catholics, but we are at a loss to get it stopped. Liberal Democrats also tell lies constantly and can’t get that stopped either. I guess when God’s ready, it will all stop.

Good, it’s supposed to be secret. The election isn’t supposed to be like American Idol with people phoning in their choice.
...Now somebody’s going to suggest that now that I wrote that.
The Conclave will be secret. The preliminaries shouldn't be. My guess is that the Curial Cardinals are a bit touchy about other Cardinals, left right and all in between, stating emphatically that the Curia must be reformed. Sounds like Eminences Bertone and Sodano are taking the criticisms personally.
The Cardinals were giving general press conferences every day on different stages of the process, the significance of the ritual, etc. and not on anything that was actually being discussed. They felt that this would instill confidence in the openness of the process, and they did nothing to reveal anything “secret.”
The Italians, on the other hand, are busy as birddogs leaking the actual conferences to the Italian press. But the Dean of the College of Cardinals, Cdl Sodano, is not only an Italian, but one very opposed to BXVI and his appointments (which would mean most of the younger American cardinals).
Even the Italian press today had a commentator saying “The Americans are being punished for the sins of the Italians.”
This is not the reason which was reported yesterday .....
He added that at this mornings general meeting, the names of those cardinals who revealed too much were read off in front of the assembly. (!)
Either way, I completely support a media blackout. Get the secular 'flesh' out of the way to allow only the Spirit to dwell.
seems our Twitter Culture is infecting even the Holy See
Yes, exactly.
The American Cardinals were merely talking to the press to try to educate them as to what this is all about. There were no secrets. The conclave is secret, but the conclave has not yet begun.
The problem is that Sodano and most of the Italian Cardinals think they should be the guys running the Church, and they really resent outsiders taking over—as they did with JP II and Benedict XVI.
Fortunately, they are being stupid behaving like this, and I doubt very much that it will line up much support for their insider views.
Isn’t that a 60s or 70s song, “Mother-in-law....You talk too much!”?
Speaking to the American Press is a waste of time. No matter what they are told by Cardinals or Bishops the press will turn it into some slur of the Church. The best policy is to ignore them. They will publish their fiction anyway.
“The election isnt supposed to be like American Idol...”
It is NOT like American Idol...the leaks are from Italian Cardinals to the Italian press...Cardinal Sodano has it deliberately wrong here...

To the Vatican curia, welcome to the age of 21st century social media.
They even worry my pet.
That must be an updated version of a song from the with the same name.
The Italian cardinals forget that the Church is global now.
Apparently some of the "flesh" ignoring the Holy Spirit is wandering around in cassocks.
With all the internecine squabbling, political manuevering and media manipulation going on, it will be a wonder if the Holy Spirit's guidance is even a factor for some of these papal electors.
