Yes, it’s Reformation Day and so here’s some Luther.
First, the famous speech at the Diet of Worms. Some of this is, perhaps, a little embellished but the guts of it is certainly true. And Joseph Fiennes’ portrayal of Luther is just brilliant.
Next, my favourite Luther quote ever - for what I hope are obvious reasons!
We should preach the Word, but the results must be left solely to Gods good pleasure . . . I opposed indulgences and all the papists, but never with force. I simply taught, preached, and wrote Gods Word; otherwise I did nothing. And while I slept, or drank Wittenberg beer with my friends Philip and Amsdorf, the Word so greatly weakened the papacy that no prince or emperor ever inflicted such losses upon it. I did nothing; the Word did everything (LW 51:77).
Enjoy.
Joseph Fiennes portrayal of Luther is just brilliant.
Please note that I substituted a picture of the "Diet of Worms" scene in the above, for the embedded YouTube video preview found in the original. Fiennes' version of Luther's "Here I stand" speech can be found on YouTube here.
Is that from a movie? The Reformation is one of my favorite Historical periods..
The Church dropped the ball during this period if you ask me. What happened a century later with the dissolution in England was deplorable. For example; destroying all the statined glass window, statues, etc and replacing the abbies, cathedrals, etc, with the drab austerity of a “reformed” church..
That’s a great picture. Who brought the camera? :O)
