Cardinal Law Linked to Crackdown on Nuns

Three respected Catholic publications are reporting that Cardinal Bernard F. Law, the controversial former Boston archbishop, played a key role in the Vatican's decision to tighten its grip on the largest association of Catholic nuns in the United States.

The Vatican announced its initiative on April 18, naming three American prelates to ensure that US nuns conform to Church doctrine, which has grown more conservative under Pope John Paul II and his successor, Pope Benedict XVI.

Earlier this week, a columnist for The Tablet, a British Catholic weekly, reported that the Vatican's initiative was sparked by William E. Lori, the recently named archbishop of Baltimore, who "formally petitioned" the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith to investigate the nuns.

The Tablet also reported that Law was "the person in Rome most forcefully supporting Bishop Lori's proposal."

But Lori denied the first of those assertions in a statement issued to the Globe yesterday through the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

"Bishop Lori did not petition the CDF to conduct the current doctrinal assessment of the ((Leadership Conference of Women Religious)), nor would it have been appropriate for him to do so," the statement said.

The statement did not address any role that Law might have played in the move to rein in the Leadership Conference, which represents 57,000 nuns, or 80 percent of those in the United States.

Sandro Magister, writing in an Italian publication, and John Allen of the National Catholic Reporter also reported that Lori and Law used their influence to help initiate the Vatican's actions against the nuns, although those reports were less specific about their actions.

And the US Conference of Catholic Bishops appeared to at least partially confirm those reports in a second statement to the Globe.

This statement said that Lori, when he........

"... naming three American prelates to ensure that US nuns conform to Church doctrine . . ."

I don't care who was involved in getting the ball rolling the above quoted action was long overdue.

The secular press continues to LOATHE the Catholic Church.

Therefore the faith-errant, disobedient nuns wear the white hats and the mean ole bishop (A.K.A. ALL Catholic males) wear the black.

Nuns take vows of obedience? I can hear the s.p.: "Bad laws are made to be broken." The s.p. continues to shows its abysmal ignorance of the one true 2000-year old Church of Jesus. Ignorance IS bliss in this case, and arrogant and ESPECIALLY self serving.

The nuns: arrogant, disobedient, vow-breaking and self serving, ESPECIALLY self serving.

The other day I ran into a woman I used to see every day at Daily Mass. I told her I missed her and asked if her job was interfering. She got highly indignant and said she had “had it with those cardinals sticking their noses into things that didn’t concern them.” She said she hadn’t been to Mass since their letter about the healthcare bill, and now that they are “going after the nuns” she doesn’t know when she’ll be back. I was appalled, but can’t help but wonder how many other CINOs will take the same stance. I am a convert and, for the life of me, I can’t understand how a cradle Catholic doesn’t understand the position of the church on life!

Cardinal Law used to say mass on television years ago when he was in Boston and nuns used to set up and break down the ‘set’ at the studio. According to my friend who helped produce the show the cardinal treated the nuns like dirt. He was very harsh with them.

SHOCK!

“Vatican demands Nuns teach Catholic Teachings!”

“linked” is always such a positive term in the hands of liberals.

Did they ever inquire about any of Obama’s “links”?

Wow. “Sister” ranting away. No man is gonna tell her what’s what. Good luck to the Vatican in reining-in that crew. Maybe the Sisters will split off and become Episcopalians.

I suppose the purpose of this article is to undermine the effort to do something about all those dissident nuns, and that’s why they are pinning it on Cardinal Law, who is famous because of the priest-pederast business, which was initiated by the liberal media in Boston.

I’m not going to excuse Cardinal Law. But he had a very difficult job. His archdiocese was full of heretical priests, notably the Jesuits with the colleges and seminary, and if he had removed all the troublemakers there would not have been enough of them left to man the churches.

My Aunt knew him well. I met him personally several times, and found him orthodox and admirable. He had a reputation before the scandal broke as a conservative who gave liberal priests a hard time. And, of course, the Sexual Revolution was in full swing and the usual attitude in the Church at that time was that if a priest got into trouble, he should be sent to a psychiatrist and quickly straightened out, then put back on duty. That was a terrible error, but it was widely believed, until reality demonstrated that it didn’t work.

In any case, I don’t think Cardinal Law is exactly the villain that the press has portrayed him to be, in order to advance their attack on the Church and its priests.
