U.S. Catholic Bishop Who Resigned Fathered Two Children

VATICAN CITY Jan 4 (Reuters) - An assistant bishop of the Roman Catholic archdiocese of Los Angeles in the United States has resigned because he had a secret family, including two teenage children.

The Vatican said on Wednesday that Pope Benedict had accepted the resignation of Gabino Zavala, an auxiliary bishop of the diocese which has been plagued by sexual scandals.

A brief Vatican announcement did not give the reason for Zavala's resignation, saying only that the pope had accepted it under the norm in canon (Church law) that says a bishop who is ill or otherwise unfit to carry out his duties should resign.

But Zavala's direct superior, Los Angeles Archbishop Jose Gomez, has prepared a letter for the faithful in the archdiocese explaining the circumstances of the departure of Zavala, who was assistant bishop for the San Gabriel region of California.

In the letter, a draft of which was obtained from a Catholic Church source in Rome, Gomez said Zavala, 60, had informed him in early December that he was the father of two teenage children who live with their mother in another state.

The Catholic Church demands celibacy from its priests.

"Bishop Zavala also told me that he submitted his resignation to the Holy Father in Rome, which was accepted. Since that time, he has not been in ministry and will be living privately," Gomez says in the letter.

The blogosphere is abuzz with this at the moment.

Looks like Abp Gomez is starting to clean house. Zavala was one of Mahony's pals and had been a long time auxiliary in LA. I can't believe Mahony didn't know about this.

He used to be rector at St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo. It’s highly suspect he actually fathered any children.

Mahony was our Bishop (Stockton) when I was a kid in Catholic school, I am always bothered when I see things like this because I always had liked him.

AFA coming clean, better later than never but he shouldn’t have waited so long either.

Yeah well, it’s not such a big scandal in light of other ones that we’ve endured. I hope things work out for him and his family.

Father children is not at all in keeping with the Catholic doctrine for priets/bishops. Now, had he had sex with two children; well, that would be a different story.

U.S. Catholic Bishop Who Resigned Fathered Two Children

WIKI Bishop Gabino Zavala (b. September 7, 1951 in Guerrero, Mexico) is a retired Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Born in Mexico, Zavala grew up in Los Angeles and was ordained a priest on May 28, 1977. Bishop Zavala opposes the death penalty, supports young people, and is a long-time supporter of immigration reform, and although he is sometimes considered orthodox in his beliefs he has a long history of supporting controversial positions on homosexuality.

He was honored in 2004 by Death Penalty Focus for his efforts in reforming the criminal justice system and working to abolish the death penalty.

Zavala is involved with a number of organizations: he is the bishop president of the U.S. section of Pax Christi, the international Catholic peace movement; the Co-President of Interfaith Worker Justice, an organization committed to educating, mobilizing, and organizing the religious community to advocate for better wages and working conditions for low-wage workers; and he serves as the Episcopal advisor to the International Commission of Catholic Prison Pastoral Care (ICCPPC).

Formerly rector of St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo, CA, he also is an adjunct professor of Canon Law and Pastoral Theology in the graduate programs of Theology and Pastoral Theology at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.

The pope accepted his resignation due to Code of Canon Law c. 401 §2 on January 4th, 2012. According to the Archbishop of Los Angeles José H. Gomez, Zavala resigned because he fathered two children.

I can believe that Mahoney gave this a pass. I am glad the house is being cleaned. I am glad to read of the support offered to the woman and the children.

Of course he knew. Mahony was one of the most progressive bishops, a gift to the US Catholic Church from Archbishop Jadot Still Proud Of Bishops He Gave U.S.. These included former Santa Fe Archbishop Roberto Sanchez, who resigned in a sex scandal, Boston Cardinal Bernard Law, Mahony in Los Angeles, Clark in Rochester, and my bishop Howard Hubbard, many of whom are known more for their advocacy of homosexual rights, their protection of pederast priests, and their conunitment to modernism than to their commitment to the Church's doctrines.

Why didn’t he resign when he first made the woman pregnant?

The Catholic Church demands celibacy from its priests.

Correction for the ignorant Philip Pullella:

The Church requires those men seeking ordination in the Latin Rite to adopt the discipline of celibacy.

The other 21 Churches sui juris which comprise, with the Latin Rite, the Catholic Church, ordain, as a norm, married men. However, a single Priest once ordained in any one of those 21 Churches is required to adopt the discipline of celibacy.

His number is not in my Filo Fax so I can not call and ask.

Why didn’t he resign when he started having intimate relations with her? I’m sure in his mind he justified his behavior as all sinners are wont to do. What that justification was I have no idea.
