New York's new Governor, Andrew Cuomo, center, leaves the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception
ALBANY - Gov. Cuomo got some spiritual backing Sunday as he set out to revitalize state government.
The new governor began his second day in office at 9 a.m. Mass at Albany's Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, where he was urged to move forward with a sense of "evangelical daring" in his work to fix the broken state government.
"We know they, over the next four years, will be deeply immersed in the work of evangelization by bringing about the transformation of our state and our society," Bishop Howard Hubbard said in his homily.
Cuomo, who was with his three daughters and live-in girlfriend, Sandra Lee, sat in the front pew as Hubbard described evangelization as the work of addressing not only a community's spiritual needs, but its social and political ones as well.
Citing the efforts of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Franklin Roosevelt and Dwight Eisenhower, Hubbard said people need a sense of vision and a willingness to take risks to transform society and make a stronger community.
"Ultimate victory over forces that are seemingly insurmountable is really possible," Hubbard said.
The divorced son of former Gov. Mario Cuomo, who was once chastised by Catholic leaders for his support of abortion rights, calmly received Holy Communion. Lee walked in line for Communion with him.
The 53-year-old governor praised Hubbard's sermon as "inspirational."
"The talk of transformation, I thought, was relevant," he said.
Lt. Gov. Robert Duffy, who was also at the Mass, added that "perhaps if the churches were filled up, there would be less problems with Albany."
Cuomo followed morning prayers with quick action, issuing an executive order requiring ethics training every two years for employees in the governor's office, as well as agency commissioners and their lawyers. "Honor and integrity will be a hallmark of this administration," Cuomo vowed.
Government reform groups quickly praised Cuomo's order of mandatory ethics training, which will be given by the Public Integrity Commission.
"With the ethical morass that has engulfed state government in recent years, this is a welcomed development," said Barbara Bartoletti, of the state League of Women Voters.
According to another source, the new governor was inspired by Bishop Hubbard’s homily. Ahhhh ... birds of a feather ...
Ping.
Both the “bishop” and Cuomo should be immediately excommunicated.
I would have hoped that his Excellency would have placed his faith in Jesus Christ to transform society rather than worship Caesar.
The Catholic Church has got to take a stand against these CINO’s. Now! This is so disgusting, it wreaks! The Church has to call sin SIN again!!! Either the faith stands for something or it is worthless.
Hmmm. Divorced, live-in girl friend, pro-abortion, receives the Sacrament. Doesn’t seem very Catholic to me.

Though divorced, she is remarried and pro-life. Whether she received Communion the articles I read don’t say.
I attended a funeral in a Catholic church a couple weeks ago. When communion time came, we were informed it was for Catholics only. Since I am not, I didn’t take it. Had I been divorced, openly living in sin and opposed to a basic Catholic doctrine it would have been all right as long as I was a Catholic, I suppose.
There were discussion amongst the local talking heads about what to call her; first lady; first girlfriend? My vote is “Governor’s shack up honey”.
What the heck does that mean? To me evangelization means using he Bible to bring people to Christ. That has got to be the most arcane statement I have ever heard form the pulpit, and believe me I've heard some doozies.
I see that his Excellency was made bishop in Albany in 1977 at the ripe old age of 38. He was among the last of the Paul VI bishops.
I think it speaks volumes that he was made bishop of Albany in 1977 and did not move beyond that relatively small diocese after JPII became pope.
I am sure the faithful of Albany are praying long and hard for a good and courageous shepherd when his Excellency retires in three years.
Worth repeating..and they wonder why the pews are empty.
Sandra Lee is “Semi-Home Made”
Oh, how ironic. Mary may have been conceived but perhaps never born had Joseph been a true liberal like KOMO.
Sorry bout that typo.
Oh, never mind. Mary was conceived without sin. Sorry again!!
Yes you were right the first time as the Immaculate Conception refers to Mary’s conception! :-)
It’s OK many (most?) Catholics get that wrong.
Bishop Hubbard, it should be noted for those who don’t know, is one of the oldest of the hard lefty bishops going all the way back to the mid-70’s... he was only 39. We have to put up with him for three more years before retirement.
