CHERIE Blair yesterday provoked controversy by defending Muslim women who cover their faces.
The wife of the former Labour prime minister said it was wrong to see burkha-clad women as a threat, and compared the all-enveloping robes to a nuns habit.
Her half-sister, Lauren Booth, announced last month that she had converted to Islam and has not ruled out wearing a burkha herself.
Mrs Blair made her remarks in the Spanish capital Madrid, where she was an unpaid guest speaker at a conference to celebrate European Muslim women of influence.
Last year she attacked women in Afghanistan being forced to wear burkhas as a symbol of Taliban tyranny. She called it a crucial barrier in the struggle both to be equal and to be seen as equal.
She has also said full-face veils such as the niqab or burkha prevent women from expressing their personality and has questioned whether they are actually acknowledging the womans right to be a person in her own right.
But yesterday she said womens rights to choose their dress should be respected, not feared.
Non-Muslims used the burkha as a metaphor of our fear of a supposed Islamic threat, she told an interviewer. But if the thousands of Muslims in Europe who participate in our way of life chose to dress in a particular way because of their beliefs, we shouldnt feel threatened.

She’s an idiot who’s sister just turned Muslim....double idiots.
Yes, but nuns don’t wear suicide vests to blow themselves up in supermarket or smuggle arms to their terrorist buddies under their ample garments.
So if thousands of women go back home to their abusive husbands and boyfriends just to get knocked about and beaten up all over again, does that make the abuse, the beatings and the knockdowns “right”?
(Just curious.)
The only nun I ever saw carry a weapon or explosives under her habit was a fake nun in a Clint Eastwood movie.
True that. Nuns are always blowing sh!t up...
Nuns aren’t forced into servitude.
A nun who refuses to wear her habit isn’t setting herself up to be a victim of an “honor killing”.
Get a grip on reality, you stupid liberal bitch... try to see what’s really going on here.
Muslims are slowly burning England to the ground.
Too bad no one cares. :(
EXCEPT: Wearing a nun’s outfit is a matter of choice to the women who do it. They are not forced into wearing it, and I don’t see the whole of western culture wearing it either.
“Yes, but nuns dont wear suicide vests to blow themselves up in supermarket or smuggle arms to their terrorist buddies under their ample garments.”
Exactly. The only weapons the nuns I had in Catholic school were yard sticks to wrap your knuckles.
"How do you solve a problem like Sharia...?"
I have 16 years of Catholic education. Nuns are much more scary then Islamic terrorists. They’re tougher and if you get on their wrong side more dangerous too.

I can’t speak for all nuns but the Irish ones were tougher on kids than the Polish ones my husband had in grade school. They were sweet old ladies compared to the crew I had. Italian nuns were just as bad.
Tony needs to shove Cherie into a burkha that has a gag in it.
I never saw a nun conceal her face, either.
“Her half-sister, Lauren Booth, announced last month that she had converted to Islam and has not ruled out wearing a burkha herself.”
Methinks someone needs a psych eval. Anybody know anything about this woman ?
The French in wanting to ban Burkha’s as just going back to their historic roots.
So THAT'S what all those recent democrat-sponsored attack ads meant when they said "So-and-So is AGAINST a woman's right to choose...!"
They never finished the sentence, and I kept asking my wife: "A woman's right to choose WHAT?" -- but she didn't know either. Wait 'til I tell her!
On the other hand, why would any republican oppose a woman's right to choose how to dress? I guess I'm still confused...
;-)

I agree; also the history of the religion and their patrons should be looked at as well. I’ve never heard of a nun blowing herself up, and Catholics being terrorists.
I’m not saying all Muslims are terrorists, either, but their religion dictates hate and it seems the only time you hear about them it’s related to something bad or hateful.
I think they need to realize it’s just plain unrealistic for everyone to be the same in religion, thought, etc... I guess that’s why everything is mandatory with them. :(
It’s not about a piece of cloth. It’s the ideology that it symbolizes. To date, no Christian nun has ever put on a suicide vest and blown herself up to kill non-Christians.
