For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life .Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: (Romans 5:10,12)
We have been looking at Pauls teaching about assurance,in Romans 5 . Because of the resurrection of Jesus, we have been justified by faith, and brought into a new status of grace, which empowers us to rejoice even in trials, knowing that we have been completely reconciled to God, and abide as objects of the love of God.
Martyn Lloyd Jones, in his excellent study of Romans points out that in verse 10, the text reads We shall be saved by his life, but that it could be better rendered We shall be saved in His life..
The fact that we, the believers are considered to be in His lifeor In Him, is one of the greatest assurances we can possibly hold, as to our salvation.
But of Him are you In Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us Wisdom, Righteousness ,sanctification and redemption.(I Cor 1:30)
In Gods economy there is a sense in which there are only two men, Adam and Christ. All of humanity are considered to be either in Adam or In Christ. We were born in Adam , and upon new birth, by the death and resurrection of Jesus, we are Born Again,In Christ.
For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.(I Corinthians 15:21-22)
There is also a sense in which there was only one sin, the sin in the garden, and everything else, all evil, self will, pride and rebellion, is the outflow of that one sin. Yes all of us have sinned individually, but all sins are an outflow of the one sin.
Wherefore as by One man ,sin entered into the world First of all, there really was an Adam, in whose loins the human race truly was entirely contained at one time, in the garden of Eden.
By that man sin made its entrance into the world, and consequently death. There was no death before the sin of Adam, but there is universal sin and death now. All of us were in Adam when he sinned, and all of us are and were effected by the sin of Adam.
Like it or not, all of us share in Adams sin, it has effected us, from birth, we are born in the Image of God, yet born estranged from God, and bear a sinful fallen nature.
The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies.(Psalm 58:3)
Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.(Psalm 51:5)
This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him .And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, and after his image; and called his name Seth:(Genesis 5:1-3)
Notice the teaching of Genesis? Adam was made in the Image of God, and bore a son Seth, who was born in the Image of Adam This is called the doctrine of original sin.
Original sin is highly resented by many, but it is the explanation of what is wrong with us as people. we are fallen. Our problems go deeper than what we have done, it is who we are that alienates us from God. I am not a sinner because I sin, I sin because I was born a sinner.
Adams sin has been imputed to all of us, in the economy of Gods salvation, although he makes it clear that we all sin for ourselves, without Adam. However there is a solidarity of the Human race, whereby the One mans sin has so effected us to literally constitute us as sinners before God. As in Adam all die
This also explains why salvation cannot possibly be a matter of reform or self-improvement, it is who we are that condemns us, children of Adam, estranged and condemned as sinners with Adam, bearing the family (sinful) traits.
We need far more than forgiveness, we need a new birth, in fact we need a new Creation and a new Adam. That is the gospel of Romans chapter 5, that if the first Adam can representatively plunge us all into condemnation and death, there is a second Adam who has representatively reversed all of that! Hallelujah!
Come Lord, we need you so much!!!
What was that one sin?
B does not follow A.
Said the criminal to the judge.
By the offense of the one the many were made sinners...Romans 5
No. more like, “I was an alcoholic because my father was...” but the judge says, I am sure that had an effect but you are still responsible for your own drunkenness”-
I got that. My question was, what was the original sin?
Disobedience to God and His word to him.
The original sin was grasping at godhood,”You shall be as god’s knowing good and evil” instead of being willing to be a man in dependance upon God.
Adam was made in the Image of God...but the children of Adam bear the fallen imgage of Adam...they have a sin nature
Amen!
Please forgive me for butting in like that...should have read more carefully and should not have butted in.
Pastor is absolutely right; the disobedient act (of not listening to God, etc.) was the result of Adam’s desire to be like God, knowing good and evil.
Thank you.
Thank you. To 'combine' the answers, Adam disobeyed God because he wanted to be 'like' God. IIRC, the serpent told Eve they would be 'like' God if they ate the apple.
No such thing as butting in. It's an OPEN forum.
Are you sure? Maybe it was 'made in the imagination of God'. Being in the 'image' of something, usually means 'looks like', but not always.
Could the source in the Bible have meant something like "a chip off the old block"?
In tribal societies, it is common to think of being ‘in’ an ancestor. Corporate guilt is also normal - if one member of a tribe commits a crime, all have unless the crime is dealt with by the tribe.
If we unite with Adam (which we do by birth), we share his sin. That sounds strange to nation-state type people, but is normal thinking in tribes.
If we unite with Jesus, then we become members of his tribe, and IN HIM we have everything he has. This, as I understand it, is corporate election - tribal society applied to theology.

Consider:
“Tribal law jurisdiction encompasses four major areas of consideration.
a. Killing among tribes cases are divided into various reprisal acts in which a member of one tribe is killed or murdered by another. Depending on the circumstances of the murder, tribes may exact blood from the offending
tribe or individual family. These killings can in some cases continue up to seven generations (kham) depending on the seriousness of the situation.
b. Killing during feuds or fighting cases will cause the offending tribe to seek punishment of the perpetrator or pay fasel (compensation). The amount of fasel will depend on the persons position in the tribe who was killed or his relationship to the sheikh of the tribe. The tribe which killed a member of another tribe will collect money from all the tribes families, if the killed members tribe agrees to this form of compensation. The victims tribe determines the amount of fasel.
c. Killing without cause cases. The victims tribe will kill four men from the killers tribe. This may include cousins and uncles. The retribution may target any relative up to the fifth relative (kham) in the killers family. One of the four must be the killer. This form of retribution is called Morabya. There will also be a payment of money to the killed members tribe. This is a fixed amount of money.

So you’ll know where I’m coming from, I believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God—God chose to reveal Himself to mankind through the written word, through men He chose. I believe God has an intended meaning for His word, so I believe it was meant to be taken in a plain, normal sense (that is, literally), leaving room for symbolism where symbolism is intended, as the context will indicate.
In Genesis 1:26 God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over over the fish of the sea”...
Then v. 27: And God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female he created them.
These two verses really reveal a lot—
The Hebrew word used here for God is “elohim,” and it is a plural word, and God says “Let Us make man according to our likeness,” “in His own image,” which shows both unity and plurality in the Godhead. The male and the female were created in the image of God.
We human beings have a triune nature: body, soul and spirit. The first couple was able to enjoy a perfect relationship with their Creator until they sinned. God had promised death if they ate, but they didn’t die (physically) that day, they died spiritually. And sin entered into the world.
From that day on the “sons of Adam” come into the world spiritually dead, or separated from God, our trespasses and sins. Only by the grace of God can a person be made alive, and only through Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 2:1-10 describes it well.
The Bible says that when a person believes in the Lord Jesus Christ he becomes new creation, he is no longer “in Adam,” but “in Christ.” He is spiritually made alive and can now relate to God properly (obey His word), through the power of the indwelling Spirit of God.
This is described in Romans 6.
There is so much more...it’s all in His Word, the Bible.
The Lord came once and is coming again soon for His own.
