whom even the winds and the sea obey?”

July Devotion: The Precious Blood 
Like the Sacred Wounds of Jesus, His Precious Blood deserves special honor because of its close relation to the Sacred Passion. That honor was given to it from the beginning by the Apostles who praised its redeeming power. (Rom. 5:9 "we are justified by His blood"; Heb. 13:12 "and so Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people by His blood, suffered outside the gate"; 1 John 1:7 "and the blood of Jesus Christ, His Son, cleanses us from all sin.") 
The Church has always held devotion to the Precious Blood in high esteem. We continue to recognize and publicly acknowledge the profound indebtedness of the whole human race to Christ, Priest and Victim. 
 
Standing at the foot of the cross, we see Jesus' head, hands, feet, and side pouring out streams of precious blood. It is precious because it: 
·      Redeems us and atones for our sins. Through His precious blood we are reconciled to God, made one with Him. Death ceases to be death and heaven's gates are opened to us.  
·      Cleanses us from all sin.  
·      Preserves us and keeps us safe from the grasp of evil.  When the Father sees us washed in the Blood of the Lamb we are spared.  
·      Comforts us. It is the constant reminder that Jesus - true God and true man suffered and died to save us and to open heaven to us because He loves us.  
·      Sanctifies us.  The same blood that justifies by taking away sin, continues to work within us.  Its action gives us the grace to continue on the path toward the Kingdom of God.  It assists us in achieving our new nature, leading us onward in subduing sin and in following the commands of God.  
Jesus shed His precious blood seven times during His life on earth.  They events were: 
·      Jesus shed His Blood in the Circumcision  
·      Jesus shed His Blood whilst praying in the Garden of Olives  
·      Jesus shed His Blood in the scourging  
·      Jesus shed His Blood in the crowning with thorns  
·      Jesus shed His Blood while carrying His cross  
·      Jesus shed His Blood in the crucifixion  
·      Jesus shed His Blood and water when His side was pierced 
The Power of the Precious Blood 
"I adore You, O Precious Blood of Jesus, flower of creation, fruit of virginity, ineffable instrument of the Holy Spirit, and I rejoice at the thought that You came from the drop of virginal blood on which eternal Love impressed its movement; You were assumed by the Word and deified in His person. I am overcome with emotion when I think of Your passing from the Blessed Virgin's heart into the heart of the Word, and, being vivified by the breath of the Divinity, becoming adorable because You became the Blood of God." (St. Albert the Great)  
 
At their recent meeting, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops had continuous Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament for "healing and peace."   They encouraged parishes and communities to have ongoing Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.  In these dark months of woundedness, pain and violence we need to turn to the Precious Blood of Jesus in the Eucharist, for healing, peace, and light.  
"What power we have in the Precious Blood of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist!  He is there to protect us, to be our refuge and our redemption.  (In Exodus 12, God told Moses to have His chosen people mark their door posts with the blood of an unblemished lamb, during the first Passover. Those who did this were spared when the Angel of the death passed by). This is why Archbishop Sheen said that we must call down the Blood of the Lamb, Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament.  For, he warned, when we stop calling down the Blood of the Lamb, we start calling down the blood of each other."  (From our book Bread of Life)      
"And the Lamb on the throne will shepherd them. He will lead them to springs of life-giving water" (Rev 7:17). 
"In the tumultuous events of our time, it is important to look to the Eucharist: it must be at the heart of the life of priests and consecrated people; the light and strength of spouses in putting into practice their commitment to fidelity, chastity and the apostolate; the ideal in education and in training children, adolescents and young people; the comfort and support of those who are troubled, of the sick and all who are weeping in the Gethsemane of life."  (Pope John Paul II)  
Precious Blood of Jesus, save us! 
"The only time our Lord asked the Apostles for anything was the night when He went into His agony.  But as often in the history of the church since that time, evil was awake, but the disciples were asleep.  That is why there came out of His anguished and lonely Heart a sigh: 'Could you not watch one hour with Me?'" (Mt 26:40).  Not for an hour of activity did he plead, but for an hour of friendship (Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen).  
 
St. Maria Goretti,  Patroness of Youth & Children of Mary, Feast-July 6 St. Maria of Italy (1890-1902), couldn't wait to make her First Communion.  She wanted to receive Jesus in the Holy Eucharist so that she could become more beautiful and pure like Him; she wanted Him to live in her, close to her heart.  After she received Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament for the first time, she stayed in Church for a long time after Mass to talk to Him. Maria's family lived with and worked for a farmer. His son Alessandro kept trying to make Maria sin against purity.  One day, when everyone else was working, Alessandro grabbed Maria and tried to make her sin.  Maria kept crying out for him to stop, and each time she did, he stabbed her. Courageously,   Maria resisted him and was stabbed fourteen times. St. Maria died the next day.

A Prayer for Priests 
O my God, help those priests who are faithful to remain faithful; to those who are falling, stretch forth Your Divine Hand that they may grasp it as their support.  In the great ocean of Your mercy, lift those poor unfortunate ones who have fallen, that being engulfed therein they may receive the grace to return to Your Great Loving Heart.  Amen.  Precious Blood of Jesus, protect them!A

The Eucharist is the fruit of our Lords Passion. Jesus gave up His Body on the cross so that He may give you His Body in the Holy Eucharist. Jesus poured out His very last drop of Blood on the cross so that He may fill you with His Divine Love each time that you receive Him in Holy Communion and visit Him in Eucharistic Adoration!

The Power of the Precious Blood of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist  
"The Precious Blood belongs in an especial manner to men. Much more, therefore, does God invite them to come to its heavenly baths, and receive therein, not only the cleansing of their souls, but the power of a new and amazing life. Every doctrine in theology is a call to the Precious Blood.  Every ceremony in the Church tells of it . . . .  Every supernatural act is a growth of it. Everything that is holy on earth is either a leaf, bud, blossom or fruit of the Blood of Jesus. To its fountains God calls the sinner, that he may be lightened of his burdens. There is no remission of him in anything else.  Only there is his lost sonship to be found. The saints are no less called by God to these invigorating streams. It is out of the Precious Blood that men draw martyrdoms, vocations, celebacies, austerities, heroic charities, and all the magnificent graces of high sanctity.  The secret nourishment of prayer is from those fountains" (Father Faber, The Precious Blood).

Election and punishment of Israel


[1] Hear this word that the Lord has spoken against you, O people of Israel,
against the whole family which I brought up out of the land of Egypt:
[2] ”You only have I known
of all the families of the earth;
therefore I will punish you

Commentary:

3:1-6:14. The second (and longest) part of the book contains denunciations of
Israel and predictions about how her sins will be punished. It consists of three
oracles, each beginning with “Hear this word . . .“ (3:1; 4:1; 5:1), and three others
containing the words “O you . . . “ or “Woe to you” (5:7, 18; 6:1). In terms of con-
tent, all these oracles are a development of the oracle against Israel that closed
the previous section (2:6-16).

This part begins with a new interpretation of the meaning of God’s choice of Israel.
The oracles are about that election. The Israelites think that their pilgrimages to
the popular shrines of Bethel and Gilgal (where they make voluntary offerings and
give tithes, 4:4-5, and assemble for festivals, 5:21-25) mean that they have ful-
filled their religious duties and are in a good standing before God. They are living
in prosperous times: what better proof that God is pleased with them. Material
prosperity was more marked in Israel than in Judah, but, still, life was reasonably
good under Uzziah. However, this material well-being went hand in hand with
social injustice — oppression of the poor and needy, and a contradiction between
formal religious acts and personal morality.

This is the context in which Amos preaches and utters his prophetic denounce-
ments: quite a lot of people are getting richer, but the ranks of the poor are being
swelled all the time; the rich and powerful are exploiting the poor, and are refusing
them justice; attendance at religious ceremonies in Bethel and Gilgal (schismatic
sanctuaries, for the temple of Jerusalem was the only proper place of worship) did
not affect people’s hearts; it did not provoke them to resolve to amend their lives;
they were deceiving themselves, trusting in God without having grounds for doing
so, and believed (wrongly) that they were absolved from their sins.

3:1-8. God’s choice of Israel is very vividly described here. Amos does not use the
term “covenant” or “steadfast love” to describe God’s attitude towards Israel (those
are terms often found in other prophetical texts); but he does make it clear that the
Lord’s commitment to his people is a single-minded one: “You only have I known
of all the families of the earth” (v. 2). This election means that Israel has special
duties towards God — and that God takes special care of Israel (cf. v. 3). And so
St Jerome comments on the verse as follows: “You only I have known of all the
people of the earth; therefore I will visit your iniquities upon you (cf. Amos 3:2):
‘For the Lord disciplines him whom he loves, and chastises every son whom he
receives’ (Heb 12:6). God says that I will visit, not ‘I will punish’, for the coming of
the Lord is both punishment and cure; and, he says, I will visit all of their iniquities:
all shall be chastised and none shall remain uncured” (Commentarii in Amos, 3,
1-2).

A little further on, this teaching is rounded off with a sapiential consideration (vv.
3-8). The Lord addresses Israel by means of his prophets. All events have a
cause that one cannot perceive, but they do point to their cause: when two peo-
ple go walking together it is a sign that they have previously arranged to do so
(v. 3); the roar of the lion shows that he has caught his prey or is about to do so
(v. 4), etc. So, the conclusion to be drawn is clear (cf. v. 8): if Amos is prophe-
sying, he is doing so because the Lord has spoken and man must take heed.
In a way, this verse is a kind of parallel to what Amos says to the priest of Bethel
(cf. 7:14-15): it is the Lord who has sent him to prophesy; God is the one who
has taken the initiative: “The literal meaning of these words is as follows: If all
the animals of the earth are terrified and tremble at the sound of the lion’s roar,
how can we not prophesy when the Lord bids us speak and tell the people of the
torments that await them?” (St Jerome, Commentarii in Amos, 3, 3-8).

4:6-12. This oracle has a regular rhythm to it — each of the Lord’s actions ends
with the sort of refrain you find in a poem: “... yet you did not return to me, says
the Lord” (vv. 6, 8, 9, 10, 11). The actions taken by the Lord (withdrawing food,
drought, blight, destruction of cities) are reminiscent of the plagues of Egypt; but,
most of all, they demonstrate the Lord’s sovereignty over nature. This is the same
message as is contained in the doxologies: God, the Lord of Israel, is the only
one who has power over all creation: no Baal, no Canaanite god, has any such
power. The point is also made that the punishment sent by God is aimed at
bringing about the people’s conversion. When they saw all these awful things
happen, the Israelites should have had a change of heart. But they did not:
Israel’s sin is that of pride and self-sufficiency; therefore, it is time to get ready
for judgment and punishment (v. 12; cf. 3:1).

Commentary:

23-27. This remarkable miracle left a deep impression on Jesus’ disciples, as
can be seen from the fact that the first three evangelists all report it. Christian
Tradition has applied this miracle in various ways to the life of the Church and
the experience of the individual soul. From earliest times Christian art and litera-
ture have seen the boat as representing the Church, which also has to make its
way around hazards which threaten to capsize it. Indeed, very early on, Chris-
tians were persecuted in various ways by Jews of their time, and were misunder-
stood by the public opinion of a pagan society—which also began to persecute
them. Jesus’ sleeping through the storm has been applied to the fact that some-
times God seems not to come to the Church’s rescue during persecution.
Following the example of the Apostles in the boat, Christians should seek Jesus’
help, borrowing their words, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing”. Then, when it
seems we can bear it no longer, Jesus shows His power: “He rose and rebuked
the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm”—but first rebuking us for
being men of little faith. Quite often Gospel accounts are meant to serve as ex-
amples to us: they epitomize the future history of the Church and of the individual
Christian soul.

CHRYS. He took His disciples with Him, and in a boat, that they might learn two lessons; first, not to be confounded in dangers, secondly, to think lowly of themselves in honor. That they should not think great things of themselves because He kept them while He sent the rest away, He suffers them to be tossed by the waves. Where miracles were to be shown, He suffers the people to be present; where temptations and fears were to be stilled, there He takes with Him only the victors of the world, whom He would prepare for strife.

PSEUDO-ORIGEN; Therefore, having entered into the boat He caused the sea to rise; And, lo, there arose a great tempest in the sea, so that the boat was covered by the waves. This tempest did not arise of itself, but in obedience to the power of Him Who gave, commandment, who brings the winds out of his treasures. CHRYS. They had seen others made partakers of Christ's mercies, but for as much as no man has so strong a sense of those things that are done in the person of another as of what is done to himself, it was necessary that in their own bodies they should feel Christ's mercies. Therefore He willed that this tempest should arise, that in their deliverance they might have a more lively sense of His goodness. This tossing of the sea was a type of their future trials of which Paul speaks, I would not have you ignorant, brethren, how that we were troubled beyond our strength. But that there might be time for their fear to arise, it follows, But he was asleep. For if the storm had arisen while He was awake, they would either not have feared, or not have prayed Him, or would not have believed that He had the power to still it.

PSEUDO-ORIGEN; Wonderful, stupendous event! He that never slumbers nor sleeps, is said to be asleep. He slept with His body, but was awake in His Deity, showing that He bare a truly human body which He had taken on Him, corruptible. He slept with the body that He might cause the Apostles to watch, and that we all should never sleep with our mind. With so great fear were the disciples seized, and almost beside themselves, that they rushed to Him, and did not modestly or gently rouse Him, but violently awakened Him, His disciples came to Him, and awoke Him, saying, Lord, save us, we perish.

JEROME; Of this miracle we have a type in Jonah, who while all are in danger is himself unconcerned, sleeps, and is awakened.

PSEUDO-ORIGEN; O you true disciples! You have the Savior with you and do you fear danger? Life itself is among you, and are you afraid of death? They would answer, We are yet children, and weak, and are therefore afraid; whence it follows, Jesus says to them, Why are you afraid, O you of little faith? As though He had said, If you have known me mighty upon earth, why believe you not that I am also mighty upon the sea? And even though death were threatening you, ought you not to support it with constancy? He who believes a little will be reasoned with; he who believes not at all will be neglected.

CHRYS. If any should say, that this was a sign of no small faith to go and rouse Jesus;. it is rather a sign that they had not a fight opinion concerning Him. They knew that when wakened He could rebuke the waves, but they did not yet know that He could do it while sleeping. For this cause He did not do this wonder in the presence of the multitudes, that they should not be charged with their little faith; but He takes His disciples apart to correct them, and first stills the raging of the waters. Thereof He arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.

JEROME. From this passage we understand, that all creation is conscious of its Creator; for what may be rebuked and commanded is conscious of the mind commanding. I do not mean as some heretics hold, that the whole creation is animate - but by the power of the Maker things which to us have no consciousness have to Him.

PSEUDO-ORIGEN; There fore He gave commandment to time winds and the sea, and frown a great storm it became a great calm. For it behoves Him that is great to do great things; therefore lie who first greatly stirred the depths of the sea, now again commands a great calm, that the disciples who had been too much troubled might have great rejoicing.

CHRYS; Observe also that the storm is stilled at once entirely, and no trace of disturbance appears; which is beyond nature for when a storm ceases in the counsel of nature, yet the water is wont to be agitated for some time longer, but here all is tranquillity at once. Thus what is said of the Father, He spoke, and the storm of wind ceased, this Christ fulfilled in deed; for by His word and bidding only he stayed and checked the waters. For from His appearance, from His sleeping, and His using a boat, they that were present supposed Him a man only, and on this account they fell into admiration of Him; And the men marveled, saying, What manner of man is this, for the winds and the sea obey him?

GLOSS; Chrysostom explains this, What manner of man is this? His sleeping and His appearance showed the man; the sea and the calm pointed out the God.

PSEUDO-ORIGEN; But who were the men that marveled? You must not think that the Apostles are here meant, for we never find the Lord's disciples mentioned with disrespect; they are always called either the Disciples or the Apostles. They marveled them who sailed with Him, whose was the boat.

JEROME; But if any shall contend that it was the disciples who wondered, we shall answer they are rightly spoken of as' the men,' seeing they had not yet learned the power of the Savior.

PSEUDO-ORIGEN; This is not a question, What manner of man is this? but an affirmation that He is one whom the winds and the sea obey. What manner of man then is this? That is, how powerful, how mighty, how great! He commands every creature, and they transgress not His law; men alone disobey, and are therefore condemned by His judgment. Figuratively; we are all embarked in the vessel of the Holy Church, and voyaging through this stormy world with the Lord. The Lord himself sleeps a merciful sleep while we suffer, and awaits time repentance of the wicked.

HILARY; Or; he sleeps, because by our sloth He is cast asleep in us. This is done that we may hope aid from God in fear of danger; and that hope though late may be confident that it shall escape danger by the might of Christ watching within.

PSEUDO-ORIGEN; Let us therefore come to Him with joy saying with the Prophet, Arise, O Lord, why do you sleep? And He will command the winds, that is, the demons, who raise the waves, that is, the rulers of the world, to persecute the saints, and He shall make a great calm around both body and spirit, peace for the Church, stillness for the world.

RABAN; Otherwise; The sea is the turmoil of the world; the boat in which Christ is embarked is to be understood the tree of the cross, by the aid of which the faithful having passed the waves of the world arrive in their heavenly country, as on a safe shore, whither Christ goes with His own; whence He says below, he that will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow me. When then Christ was fixed on the cross, a great commotion was raised, the minds of His disciples troubled at His passion, and the boat was covered by the waves. For the whole strength of persecution was around time cross of Christ, on which He died; as it is here, But he was asleep. His sleep is death. The disciples awaken the Lord, when troubled at His death; they seek His resurrection with earnest prayers, saying, Save us, by rising again; we perish, by our trouble at Your death. This is excellent. When I was a child in California, we we taught that Father Serra was a great man. But now: "Here we must point out that there are obstacles in the way of our appreciating the witness of Junípero Serra. The biggest obstacle comes from an aggressive ideological campaign to discredit Serra and the whole missionary effort of the Franciscans in this state. They are portrayed as mere agents of an oppressive government that sought to destroy the Native American culture in California. While the scholarship behind these accusations is less than impressive, the campaign to discredit Serra has achieved great results in the public domain. If one tells a lie often enough, many people will come to believe that it is true. The view of the missionaries as oppressors is now taught to children in fourth and fifth grades in many public schools throughout the state. Moreover, Catholics themselves seem to have become indifferent towards Serra, perhaps even embarrassed by him. They are not sure whether these accusations are true, but they feel that Serra ought not to be emphasized as a role model for the faithful today.

"This is a terrible travesty. I believe that this whole dynamic is simply a particular manifestation of the war that our secular culture wages upon anything that pertains to the Christian faith in Jesus Christ. It should not surprise us that there is a campaign to discredit the holiness of a man whom the Church has declared possesses heroic virtue, therefore worthy of imitation in any age."

For shame.

If I wanted to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ
This is our glory: the witness of our conscience. There are men who rashly judge, who slander, whisper and murmur, who are eager to suspect what they do not see, and eager to spread abroad things they have not even a suspicion of. Against men of this sort, what defence is there save the witness of our own conscience?
My brothers, we do not seek, nor should we seek, our own glory even among those whose approval we desire. What we should seek is their salvation, so that if we walk as we should they will not go astray in following us. They should imitate us if we are imitators of Christ; and if we are not, they should still imitate him. He cares for his flock, and he alone is to be found with those who care for their flocks, because they are all in him.
And so we seek no advantage for ourselves when we aim to please men. We want to take our joy in men – and we rejoice when they take pleasure in what is good, not because this exalts us, but because it benefits them.
It is clear who is intended by the apostle Paul: If I wanted to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ. And similarly when he says: Be pleasing to all men in all things, even as I in all things please all men. Yet his words are as clear as water, limpid, undisturbed, unclouded. And so you should, as sheep, feed on and drink of his message; do not trample on it or stir it up.
You have listened to our Lord Jesus Christ as he taught his apostles: Let your actions shine before men so that they may see your good deeds, and give glory to your Father who is in heaven, for it is the Father who made you thus. We are the people of his pasture, the sheep of his hands. If then you are good, praise is due to him who made you so; it is no credit to you, for if you were left to yourself, you could only be wicked. Why then do you try to pervert the truth, in wishing to be praised when you do good, and blaming God when you do evil? For though he said: Let your works shine before men, in the same Sermon on the Mount he also said: Do not parade your good deeds before men. So if you think there are contradictions in Saint Paul, you will find the same in the Gospels; but if you refrain from troubling the waters of your heart, you will recognise here the peace of the Scriptures and with it you will have peace.
And so, my brothers, our concern should be not only to live as we ought, but also to do so in the sight of men; not only to have a good conscience but also, so far as we can in our weakness, so far as we can govern our frailty, to do nothing which might lead our weak brother into thinking evil of us. Otherwise, as we feed on the good pasture and drink the pure water, we may trample on God’s meadow, and weaker sheep will have to feed on trampled grass and drink from troubled waters.

Portrait discovered in a Zacatecas, Mexico second-hand store in 1954 by Harry Downie.

History:
Blessed Junipero Serra was born at Petra, Island of Majorca, November 24, 1713; he died at Monterey, California, August 28, 1784.

On September 14, 1730, he entered the Franciscan Order. For his proficiency in studies he was appointed lector of philosophy before his ordination to the priesthood. Later he received the degree of Doctor of Theology from the Lullian University at Palma, where he also occupied the Duns Scotus chair of philosophy until he joined the missionary college of San Fernando, Mexico (1749). While traveling on foot from Vera Cruz to the capital, he injured his leg in such a way that he suffered from it throughout his life, though he continued to make his journeys on foot whenever possible. At his own request he was assigned to the Sierra Gorda Indian Missions. He served there for nine years, part of the time as superior, learned the language of the Pame Indians, and translated the Catechism into their language. Recalled to Mexico, he became famous as a most fervent and effective preacher of missions. His zeal frequently led him to employ extraordinary means in order to move the people to penance. He would pound his breast with a stone while in the pulpit, scourge himself, or apply a lighted torch to his bare chest. He was appointed superior of a band of fifteen Franciscans for the Indian Missions of Lower California. Early in 1769 he accompanied Portolá's land expedition to Upper California. On the way he established the Mission San Fernando de Velicatá, Lower California. He arrived at San Diego on July 1, and on July 16 founded the first of the twenty-one California missions, which accomplished the conversions of all the natives on the coast as far as Sonoma in the north.

In 1778 he received the faculty to administer the Sacrament of Confirmation. After he had exercised his privilege for a year, Governor Neve directed him to suspend administering the sacrament until he could present the papal Brief. For nearly two years Father Serra refrained, and then Viceroy Majorga gave instructions to the effect that Father Serra was within his rights. During the remaining three years of his life he once more visited the missions from San Diego to San Francisco, six hundred miles, in order to confirm all who had been baptized. He suffered intensely from his crippled leg and from his chest, yet he would use no remedies. He confirmed 5309 persons, who, with but few exceptions, were Indians converted during the fourteen years from 1770. Besides extraordinary fortitude, his most conspicuous virtues were insatiable zeal, love of mortification, self-denial, and absolute confidence in God. His executive abilities has been especially noted by non-Catholic writers. A bronze statute of heroic size represents him as the apostolic preacher in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. In 1884 the Legislature of California passed a concurrent resolution making August 29 of that year, the centennial of Father Serra's burial, a legal holiday.

He was beatified September 25, 1988 by Pope John Paul II.
