Are you, or have you ever been, the Antichrist?
The Daily Texan ^ | 2/4/2008 | Chris Jones

Nobody's quite sure, but it seems possible that Barack Obama may be the Antichrist.

At least, that's what's been thought in various dark corners of the Internet for nearly two years, ever since Obama started rising in prominence as a Democratic presidential contender. Of course, considering what's expressed on the Internet, that's not particularly remarkable. But the closer Obama gets to the Democratic nomination, the louder the speculation seems to get, showing up in more and more places: comments on CNN Blogs, Yahoo! Answers and YouTube.

Historically, Antichrist theorizing involved a patchwork of various disparate Bible verses that Christian "scholars" such as John Nelson Darby, Hal Lindsey and, most recently, Tim LaHaye (co-author of the "Left Behind" series), sew into a Christian narrative.

The practice has been continually debunked as logically bogus and intellectually suspect. But that does not stop the significant number of people who take theorizing about the Antichrist extremely seriously. Tens of millions of copies of the "Left Behind" series have been sold. If even a tiny fraction of those people - one in 100 - actually believe the books, then possibly hundreds of thousands of people look out for the Antichrist daily.

But why would anyone believe Obama is the Antichrist? Seen through the mix-and-match lens of "Left Behind"-style prophecy, the Antichrist is supposed to be a charismatic figure who rises to great political prominence, appeals to many and promises peace and prosperity. Such a description is vague enough to cover dozens, if not hundreds of leaders, from JFK to George W. Bush. But given the decades-long marriage between Christian evangelicals and political conservatives, it's not surprising that one of the Democrats' most important candidates in decades should be tarred with outrageous accusations.

Of course, such accusations don't end there. Anonymous e-mail campaigns have dogged Obama throughout the race, suggesting that he's a Muslim with intent to eventually impose Sharia religious law on the entire country once elected. And while such accusations can be quickly disproved with a modicum of research, they're still likely to haunt Obama - swiftboat-style - through the rest of his campaign.

Even in the face of these ridiculous smears, there are two silver linings that Obama supporters can take solace in. First, it's worth pointing out that the more unhinged the attacks on Obama become, the more foolish they make the attackers and their associates look. As bad as the accusation that Hillary Clinton killed Vince Foster made fringe Republicans look, an insistence that a Democratic candidate is literally the Antichrist is much worse.

Second, it's a good, noteworthy thing that these accusations have largely eclipsed any attacks on Obama because of his race. Fifty years ago it was unimaginable that a black man could have a real shot at being elected president of the United States; today the bigger issue is whether said black man might actually be the devil in disguise. Social and political dysfunction may go on forever, but at least we as a society are collectively transcending the old insanity and letting those on the fringes develop brand new types of craziness.

If I recall, the antichrist is not married and is not into women.

He does not regard the desire of women. That can be interpreted many ways, but the desire of Jewish women during that time was to be the mother of the Messiah. So, it may just be a way of saying, he doesn’t have any regard for Christ.

Also, he worships a god of fortresses that his fathers did not know. His fathers were Muslim. Not sure who the god of fortresses would be.

Saw a hilarious segment on Hannity and Colmes last night. Frank Lutz had a room full of Democratic voters in one of the super-Tuesday states. Hannity asked them to name a single accomplishment of Obama. Lutz went through them 1 by 1 . . . and not a single one of them could name a single accomplishment by Obama. Someone needs to get that segment up on You Tube. It was the bomb.

Probably has both meanings, as prophetic OT texts often do.

I wonder if a god of fortresses his fathers didn’t know is Technology. I have never heard the son of a Muslim angle though.

A prophecy teacher named Perry Stone thinks the AC will be Muslim. I don’t. I think he will be someone that the Jews will look to as their Messiah.

“As the Apostle John said there are many antichrists.”

According to our newest parish priest, we are all the anti-Christ when we sin. Father Tom and the Apostle John have a point.

Your priest is a bit off. Here’s what the word of God says, from 1 John 4:

4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.
6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

One who denies Jesus Christ came in the flesh or that He God has the spirit of antichrist.

It is just my priest’s opinion, not scripture.

In some ways, we are all (little) antichrists when we sin.

But there will be one BIG anti Christ in the end times. Anti means 1. Before, or 2. Against. When we sin, are are against Christ.

Scripture does not agree with either of your statements. In no place are people called antichrist unless they be those who deny Jesus. Yes, sin is against Christ, but only that one sin is called the spirit of antichrist.

It’s also not revealed in Scripture that the beast or false prophet is THE antichrist. As far as Scripture tells us, there will be and are now many antichrists - not one. Dispensationalists hold the view that either the beast or the false prophet is THE antichrist, but that don’t mean it’s correct.

Have you considered that Antichrist might simply be Islam?

God is calling his people. Something is going on...I can not begin to understand... but God WILL put who he wants in place. I think that Obama is not a Muslin....he is also not a Christian what he is I’m can only guess. I will pray for him and America...we are going to need it.

Amen. One thing we can absolutely count on: When AntiChrist does rise, those who see it and call it will be mocked loud and long.

I don't think any serious students of biblical prophecy are declaring him to be AntiChrist, but I do think the things that cause prophecy watchers to take a look at Obama are

IMHO, these things are why he gets a bit of attention from prophecy watchers. MANY more things have to come together over time, of course, but at this point he has enough "curiosity factors" to cause a wee bit of head scratching.

Another interesting tidbit I just ran across:

By the end of the year, “Oprah & Friends” listeners will have completed all of the lessons laid out in the Course in Miracles Workbook (New Age "Christianity"). Those who finish the Course will have a wholly redefined spiritual mindset—a New Age worldview that includes the belief that there is no sin, no evil, no devil, and that God is “in” everyone and everything. A Course in Miracles teaches its students to rethink everything they believe about God and life. The Course Workbook bluntly states: “This is a course in mind training”5 and is dedicated to “thought reversal.”

Interesting, since Oprah is perhaps Obama's biggest and most powerful supporter. Not proof that he feels the same way, but just another interesting tidbit to toss into the mix.
