US Catholic Church Ping on expected changes to the Episcopate...
IMO there's little worth commenting on, at least not until we see who he actually appoints. This one line in the article may be prescient, however:
So far, they have found an easier hand - and someone who has not made the United States much of a priority.
I think the author is simply repeating words he doesn't understand, like me singing a song in Polish.
And he uses "different than" instead of the correct "different from." I can't stand that.
And now, News from the morality front:
Church vandalism continues to spread across Italy
Naples, Apr. 12, 2007 (CWNews.com) - Vandals continue to spray-paint slogans on Italian churches, with the latest graffiti appearing on a church in Naples.
The slogan “Bagnasco, Ratzinger: shame on you!” was spray-painted in red on the church of St. Eligius the Great. The reference was to Archbishop Angelo Bagnasco, the president of the Italian bishops’ conference, and Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news).
Similar slogans have appeared during the past 10 days on the doors and walls of parish churches and other Catholic institutions in Genoa, Bologna, and Turin. The vandalism is a reaction to the Italian hierarchy’s public opposition to a legislative proposal that would give legal recognition to same-sex unions.

Yes!
This guy sounds like he's part of the problem.
I trust all you highly atuned Freepers picked up on the "dogma is incompatible with the pastoral approach" insinuation? Good. Because as we all know by know, insisting on theological clarity and doctrinal accuracy is inconsistent with teaching the faith, right? Right. Combating heresy is just not "pastoral".
In practice of course, dogma and pastoral care are complimentary not incompatible but a professor of church history at a Catholic college couldn't be expected to understand that. The Pope has in fact been very clear on dogma and just because he hasn't fried Mahony on a spit (yet) doesn't mean he's a wimp.
Men that aren't truly pastoral don't usually get the call to the See of Peter from the Holy Spirit.
Oldest Latin-rite archbishops:
Cardinal Maida of Detriot, 77.07 years
Cardinal Keeler of Baltimore, 76.11
Archbishop Kelly of Louisville, 75.75
Archbishop Lipscomb of Mobile, 75.56
Cardinal Egan of New York, 75.03
Im not sure who the other 1-2 bishops the article refers to are. Archbishop Curtiss of Omaha is 74.83. None else are over 74. There are about three dozen archdiocese, so even six archbishops in one year is an awful lot. Three cardinals being replaced in one year would be pretty stunning: there are only seven archbishop cardinals, the others being from Boston, Los Angeles, Chicago and Philadelphia.
Cardinal Mahoney of Los Angeles is 71 years old. He was appointed bishop by Pope Paul VI way back in 1975, and promoted to archbishop in 1985.
Bishop Lennon not much of an improvement over the very liberal former Bishop Pilla here in C-Town.
This is the kind of garbage that needs to get hammered.
I think Pope Benedict has been concentrating on Europe because he is alarmed at what has happened to the Church in particular, and Christianity in general, on the Continent. That's why he's been pushing the 'faith and reason' idea. He sees Europe as trying to supplant faith with reason, and failing miserably.
"Confronted with the abuse of economic power, with the cruelty of capitalism that degrades man into merchandise," Benedict writes, "we have begun to see more clearly the dangers of wealth and we understand in a new way what Jesus intended in warning us about wealth." In a chapter on the Good Samaritan, Benedict decries how the wealthy have "plundered" Africa and other parts of the developing world through colonialism.

This reads like a radical socialist tract, blaming "capitalism" and "the wealthy" for societal problems.
How about a pre-1962 Mass in every city of 50,000 people in America for starters? I’d even go with a 1962 Mass — and if even mentions the Motu Proprio I just might let out a banshee of a scream. First, let it be promulgated if it is ever going to happen. Then promote Cardinal Mahony to the Atlas Mountains in Algeria. Then do a de-Bugninizing of the Novus Ordo... Then...

Woo-hoo! Continuing to pray for Pope Benedict!
If they really cared about their parishes, they would have stayed in their own neighborhoods.
Let the dead bury the dead. Its as true about parishes as it is about people.
People should worry more about God’s final judgement and less about what the Bishops are going to let them get away with in this life.
Comments?
Graffiti sucks no matter who paints it.

The pontiff's comments put five of seven Catholic candidates at odds with their church.
Why can’t the Pope send McHooney off to some far away island?
