"Let it never be said there was no outcry from the Christians"
Whatever Happened to the Human Race? published by Fleming H. Revell Company | 1979 | Francis A Schaeffer and C. Everett Koop

Posted on 03/31/2005 10:16:28 AM PST by Alex Murphy

[Selections excerpted from Whatever Happened to the Human Race. These words were written in 1979.]

...from pages 111-112...

Let it never be said by historians in the latter days of this century that - after the Supreme Court decided on abortion in 1973 and the practice of infanticide began - there was no outcry from the medical profession and no outcry from many outside this profession. Let it never be said that the extermination program for various categories of our citizens could never have come about if the physicians of this country had stood for the moral integrity that recognizes the worth of every human life. And above everything else, let it never be said there was no outcry from the Christians! All Christians know why people are different and have value as unique individuals - sick or well, young or old. People are unique because they are made in the image of God.

What has happened to the human race? Why are we afraid of being people, of being human? Of enjoying the greatest blessings that life can bring - being alive and being people of love, tenderness, gentleness, care and concern?

It is vital that we put first not economics or efficiency charts and plans, but being people - real flesh-and-blood people. We are not to be materialistic robots who think and act like machines and will even kill to maintain their lifestyles. This attitude is as stupid as it is wrong. It is stupid because such people traded in their beautiful humanity for sawdust and ashes - for broken homes, for abortions, for starved children, and for old people locked away and even destroyed. Being a person has infinitely greater rewards for those who will consciously concentrate on being people - warm and loving people - rather than on their personal peace and affluence.

We challenge you to be a person in this impersonal age. Be human in this inhuman age. Put the people in your life first - whether perfect or marred. This is your once-in-a-lifetime chance of being "people with people." Come to your senses. You and those around you are people, made in the image of the personal God who created all people in His image.

We have seen how a people's world view affects how it's individuals look at themselves and others. Your basic world view matters. It will have enormous results. A mild revulsion at people's inhumanity to one another will not change anything. Outward actions against such horrors must begin with the inward action of each individual's evaluating the basis for his standards and then assessing the application of those standards to the world around him.

In Old Testament days, God expressed special abhorrence for the Canaanite practice of infant sacrifice. With heathenism, this was not confined to the Canaanites. For example, the ancient Europeans also offered up their offspring to the gods. These people killed their offspring in order to purchase from the gods, they hoped, their own personal peace and affluence.

Today, indiscriminate abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia are also performed for the personal peace and affluence of individuals. People who destroy their own children and others', so that they can maintain their lifestyles, are also sacrificing to the gods - the gods of a materialistic world view and practice, and the god of the "self" as the egotistic center and measure of all things.

-----

...from page 117...

We must be realistic. The alternatives we have discussed will demand a high price. They will cost each of us some of our personal peace and affluence. But we must do them - first of all, because they are right. This is taught in the whole of the Bible and especially in the teachings of Christ. And, second, it will be a sharing of the burdens of life, and one day it will be our turn to be helped - and we will be glad when we are.

The question is not the worth of the imperfect human, the retarded child, the defective adult, and the aging individual with physical and mental signs of the aging process. The question is this: Are we worthy enough to extend ourselves to meet their needs?

If we in the second half of the twentieth century wish to be remembered well, we need to do something to stop all the evils we have been speaking about. if we sit back and do nothing, our mere passivity and apathy will lead to actively evil results by removing resistance to those who are active and nonapathetic. That so many are doing so little should encourage more than a mild commitment to some vague idea of doing the "right" thing, as opposed to the "wrong" thing. As people, we are only as good as our deep inner principles; we are only as good as our world view.

MARGIN NOTES
FRANCIS SCHAEFFER

Widely recognized as one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century, Dr. Francis A. Schaeffer was the founder of the L'Abri Fellowship, an international study center and Christian community with branches in Switzerland, England, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United States. Through his work at L'Abri, Dr. Schaeffer came into personal contact with thousands of people searching for truth and reality in their lives. Before his death in 1984 he lectured frequently in the leading universities in the United States and abroad on the relevance of Christian thought. Author of twenty-three books, Dr. Schaeffer was a dedicated writer of letters, corresponding with many of the thousands of individuals his life and teaching had impacted. This brief compilation gathers excerpts from a few of these letters, offering an intimate view of a passionate Christian communicator and mind.

The unique contribution of Dr. Francis Schaeffer on a whole generation was the ability to communicate the truth of historic Biblical Christianity in a way that combined intellectual integrity with practical, loving care. This grew out of his extensive understanding of the Bible from a deep commitment to Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and a critical study of the world of man. These two pillars supported his inquisitive and analytical mind on the solid reality of the truth of God's creation and of his revelation. He understood the roots of modern thinking in its rejection of reality and rationality and pointed out the logical conclusions in a wide range of disciplines and in society.

Dr. Schaeffer understood that what a person believes will influence the way he acts in history and individual situations. There is a relationship between a person's view of truth and life, between philosophy and practice, between faulty ideas and foolish choices. Dr. Schaeffer discussed the truth of reality with anyone in many settings. This in turn brought students, professionals, scholars and others from around the world to his home to learn from his insights. They returned with them to their own world and applied them to their circle of life amd work. The ideas continue to bear fruit and to stimulate discussions and discoveries through more than 25 books, several films, taped seminars and lectures at leading universities in Europe, the US and abroard. The result has been a profound and enduring impact upon many thousands, who have themselves gone to make their own mark in history.

The central thrust of Dr. Schaeffer's teaching is that Biblical Christianity is the truth about the real world. The only reason to be a Christian is an acknowledgement of what is objectively true about human beings, the real world and the basic human predicaments. The Bible is true in all that it affirms. This emphasis is not so much the summary of academic instructions or doctrinal positions. It is the result of a searching mind, of being exposed to human history, the European culture and art, and of in-depth discussions with knowledgeable people for a life time of study, observation and work.

With the Bible as his base and a profound interest in human beings, Dr. Schaeffer's insights were developed through the experience of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the study of Florentine society and art, in lectures followed by tough discussions at modern Cambridge, in rude exposure to the slums of Bombaay and in probing questions of people from a great variety of backgrounds, in abortion protests, in response to life in the wider arena of human need and pervasive intellectual confusion in our world.

In the light of this morning's news that Terri Schiavo has passed away, I decided to delay posting letter #2 from The Letters of Francis A Schaeffer for another day, and instead offer these excerpts from Schaeffer's 1979 book Whatever Happened to the Human Race?.

Today's entry was completely hand-typed from my personal copy of the book - any transcription errors it contains are entirely mine.

Lurkers, please let me know if you would like to be included on a ping list to these Francis A. Schaeffer threads.

One of the books I am currently rereading is Isaac Asmiov's The Caves of Steel. In it is pictured an earth of the future where society is very regimented and ordered on a person's usefulness to the whole. There doesn't seem to be any individual worth recognized in people on Asimov's future earth. It is the Spacers (humans that have moved on to other planets) that still value the individual. This is what happens when we lose sight of the fact that all of us are created in the image of God. Whether Elect or Reprobate we are still created in God's image and in some way still bear that, even though it has been terribly flawed through the Fall. I pray that God has mercy on our country for what happened today.

The great lie is that we are our own persons. We are not; we belong to God.

I like these lines from "Joe Vs. the Volcano"...

ANGELICA: Did you ever think about killing yourself?

JOE: What? Why would you do that?

ANGELICA: Why shouldn't I?

JOE: Some things take care of themselves. They're not
your job. Maybe they're not even your business.

Well said, even the most disfigured infant is created in God's image. I fear they are next.

This indicates the end result of men believing they are the captain of their own ship and master of their own fate. Men now control the birth and death of others..

This death will now open the doors to court ordered Euthanasia as we enter into the One World Government, the "New Wold Order".

God is still on His throne, this was not surprise. He is sovereign in all events, but Michael and the attorney and the judges involves will still be fully responsible before God.

I pray that Terry is in the arms of our Savior having rest from those that sought to kill her.

Mat 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Thank you for this post. It is more that fitting considering the evil that culminated with the death of Ms Schiavo.

In good societies all people are of equal value. So to are they equal in corrupt societies. In the former because they are infinitely precious, in the latter because they are worthless.

They are already targeted in heathenistic societies such as primitive tribes and in Europe.

First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.
