Saturday of the Second Week of Advent

Reading I
Sir 48:1-4, 9-11

In those days,
like a fire there appeared the prophet Elijah
whose words were as a flaming furnace.
Their staff of bread he shattered,
in his zeal he reduced them to straits;
By the Lord's word he shut up the heavens
and three times brought down fire.
How awesome are you, Elijah, in your wondrous deeds!
Whose glory is equal to yours?
You were taken aloft in a whirlwind of fire,
in a chariot with fiery horses.
You were destined, it is written, in time to come
to put an end to wrath before the day of the LORD,
To turn back the hearts of fathers toward their sons,
and to re-establish the tribes of Jacob.
Blessed is he who shall have seen you
and who falls asleep in your friendship.

Responsorial Psalm
80:2ac and 3b, 15-16, 18-19

R (4) Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved.
O shepherd of Israel, hearken,
From your throne upon the cherubim, shine forth.
Rouse your power.
R Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved.
Once again, O LORD of hosts,
look down from heaven, and see;
Take care of this vine,
and protect what your right hand has planted
the son of man whom you yourself made strong.
R Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved.
May your help be with the man of your right hand,
with the son of man whom you yourself made strong.
Then we will no more withdraw from you;
give us new life, and we will call upon your name.
R Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved.

Gospel
Mt 17:9a, 10-13

As they were coming down from the mountain,
the disciples asked Jesus,
"Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?"
He said in reply, "Elijah will indeed come and restore all things;
but I tell you that Elijah has already come,
and they did not recognize him but did to him whatever they pleased.
So also will the Son of Man suffer at their hands."
Then the disciples understood
that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.

In 2004, the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe (December 12) falls on the Third Sunday of Advent. Our Lady of Guadalupe may be observed on December 11 or 13 with the permission of the local Diocesan Bishop. Our Lady of Guadalupe may be appropriately honored on December 12 in one or more petitions of the Prayer of the Faithful, in the homily, and in one of the hymns during the liturgy, but the readings and Mass formulary for December 12 will be those for the Third Sunday of Advent.

The following readings (in the next post) or any from the Common of the Blessed Virgin Mary may be used.

Saturday of the Second Week of Advent,
Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Reading I
Rev11:19a; 12:1-6a, 10ab

God's temple in heaven was opened,
and the ark of his covenant could be seen in the temple.
A great sign appeared in the sky,
a woman clothed with the sun,
with the moon under her feet,
and on her head a crown of twelve stars.

She was with child and wailed aloud in pain
as she labored to give birth.
Then another sign appeared in the sky;
it was a huge red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns,
and on its heads were seven diadems.
Its tail swept away a third of he stars in the sky
and hurled them down to the earth.

Then the dragon stood before the woman about to give birth,
to devour her child when she gave birth.
She gave birth to a son, a male child,
Destined to rule all the nations with an iron rod.
Her child was caught up to God and his throne.
The woman herself fled into the desert
where she had a place prepared by God.

Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say:,
"Now have salvation and power come,
and the Kingdom of our God
And the authority of his Anointed."

Responsorial Psalm
Judith 12:18bcde, 19
R You are the highest honor of our race.
Blessed are you, daughter,
by the Most High God,
above all the women on earth;
and blessed be the lord God,
the creator of heaven and earth.
R You are the highest honor of our race.
Your deed of hope
will never be forgotten.
by those who tell of the might of God.
R You are the highest honor of our race..

Gospel
Luke 1:-39-47

Mary set out and traveled into the hill country
in haste to a town of Judah,
where she entered the house of Zechariah,
and greeted Elizabeth.
When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting,
the infant leaped in her womb,
And Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said,
"Most blessed are you among women
and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
And how does this happen to me,
that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears,
The infant in my womb leaped for joy.
Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord
would be fulfilled."
And Mary said:
"My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
my spirit rejoices in God, my savior."

From: Matthew 17:9a, 10-13

The Transfiguration (Continuation)

[9] And as they were coming down the mountains, [10] (And) the disciples
asked Him (Jesus), "Then why do the scribes say that Elijah must come?"
[11] He replied, "Elijah does come, and he is to restore all things; [12]
but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not know him, but
did to him whatever they pleased. So also the Son of Man will suffer at
their hands." [13] Then the disciples understood that He was speaking to
them of John the Baptist.

Commentary:

10-13. Malachi 4:5 (3:23 in the Hebrew) speaks of the coming of Elijah
the prophet before "the great and terrible day of the Lord", the
Judgment Day. When Jesus says that Elijah has already come, He is
referring to St. John the Baptist, whose mission it was to prepare the
way for the First Coming of the Lord, the same as Elijah will have to
do prior to His last coming. The scribes failed to grasp the meaning
of the prophecy of Malachi; they thought it referred simply to the
coming of the Messiah, the First Coming of Christ.

THE BIGGER THE PRIZE

Presence of God

Grace I Ask:
Not to be deaf to Christ's challenge, but ready and eager to do His holy will.

The Idea:
Doctors, in public and private, seem to be always warning businessmen to watch out for their health, not to overwork or strain. Yet how many articles have I ever read or seen warning anyone not to work himself to death in spreading Christ's cause, in doing good to others, in teaching Christ's truth?

Why not? Isn't it strange that so many men should literally kill themselves with work in order to make money? They have to leave it behind when they die anyway. And so few make any noticeable effort at all to win a reward they will never lose.

My Personal Application:
In my ordinary affairs, the bigger the prize, the greater the effort I make to win. That's only common sense. Yet do I really follow through on that common-sense principle when it comes to working for Christ, helping my own soul and the souls of others? I am playing for the biggest stakes imaginable – eternal life. Do I act like it?

Others think nothing of devoting their whole days, all their free time, giving up food and sleep to make their business a success, to win an election, to pass an important examination. Well and good, but what of myself and the effort I make for the success of the one completely important job in the world – spreading the kingdom of Christ?

I Speak to God:
My God, I do not like to think of myself as a coward or slacker. Yet there must be something wrong. Maybe I just haven't thought seriously enough about the way things really are until today. Pour light into my mind that I may see more and more what is really important in this life and what part I should have in it.

Thought for Today:
"Lay up for yourselves treasure in heaven."

Mt 17:9-13
# Douay-Rheims Vulgate
9 And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying: Tell the vision to no man, till the Son of man be risen from the dead. et descendentibus illis de monte praecepit Iesus dicens nemini dixeritis visionem donec Filius hominis a mortuis resurgat
10 And his disciples asked him, saying: Why then do the scribes say that Elias must come first? et interrogaverunt eum discipuli dicentes quid ergo scribae dicunt quod Heliam oporteat primum venire
11 But he answering, said to them: Elias indeed shall come, and restore all things. at ille respondens ait eis Helias quidem venturus est et restituet omnia
12 But I say to you, that Elias is already come, and they knew him not, But have done unto him whatsoever they had a mind. So also the Son of man shall suffer from them. dico autem vobis quia Helias iam venit et non cognoverunt eum sed fecerunt in eo quaecumque voluerunt sic et Filius hominis passurus est ab eis
13 Then the disciples understood, that he had spoken to them of John the Baptist. tunc intellexerunt discipuli quia de Iohanne Baptista dixisset eis

Lk 1:39-47
# Douay-Rheims Vulgate
39 And Mary rising up in those days, went into the hill country with haste into a city of Juda. exsurgens autem Maria in diebus illis abiit in montana cum festinatione in civitatem Iuda
40 And she entered into the house of Zachary and saluted Elizabeth. et intravit in domum Zacchariae et salutavit Elisabeth
41 And it came to pass that when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the infant leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost. et factum est ut audivit salutationem Mariae Elisabeth exultavit infans in utero eius et repleta est Spiritu Sancto Elisabeth
42 And she cried out with a loud voice and said: Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. et exclamavit voce magna et dixit benedicta tu inter mulieres et benedictus fructus ventris tui
43 And whence is this to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? et unde hoc mihi ut veniat mater Domini mei ad me
44 For behold as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. ecce enim ut facta est vox salutationis tuae in auribus meis exultavit in gaudio infans in utero meo
45 And blessed art thou that hast believed, because those things shall be accomplished that were spoken to thee by the Lord. et beata quae credidit quoniam perficientur ea quae dicta sunt ei a Domino

The Word Among Us

Meditation
Sirach 48:1-4, 9-11

A stone falls into a pond, and its only evidence is the ripples that radiate across the water’s surface. The ripples continue, however, and affect the whole pond. And that is one way to understand our calling to evangelize. Jesus himself is the stone who came into this world ages ago, and each of us is another ripple affecting the world in numerous ways. Ripples have a way of changing things, but silently and without a lot of fanfare.

Our world is plagued by war, anxiety, suspicion, and divisions. How deeply, then, does it need us to shine the light of Christ! Jesus is not necessarily asking us to stand on rooftops to proclaim the gospel. Most of the time he is looking for us to be another ripple in the pond. Think of a neighbor who has just had a baby. Bringing her a meal or offering to run errands for her can go a long way in manifesting the love of Christ. Or what about speaking words of comfort to a coworker who has just lost a loved one?

God uses each of these small movements to soften people’s hearts and to show them that they do have a loving Father in heaven who cares for them. And it’s in these gestures of kindness that new life can be born.

Jesus needs only a small opening to allow him to fill someone with his love. His light will shine not because we have put the gospel in a person’s face but because the gospel shines through our witness. Actions are very powerful tools, and as the saying goes, they speak far more powerfully than words. Every day, the Holy Spirit gives us opportunities to preach the gospel through our actions. So in prayer today, ask him to help you see the people around you in the light of his love. Then, you will begin naturally to reveal Christ to them in everything you say and do.

“Jesus, you came to us in a way that hardly anyone expected, and yet you conquered sin and death. Please teach me how to let your love shine brightly, not just in words but in my actions as well. Lord, I want to please you by loving and serving you.”

RECONCILIATION

“Why do the scribes claim that Elijah must come first?” —Matthew 17:10

Elijah must come before Christ’s Christmas coming. Before the first Christmas, he came in the person of John the Baptizer (Mt 17:12-13). Before this Christmas, Elijah comes in your spouse, child, parent, friend, a poor person, or even in a stranger. You can recognize Elijah by the work he does. No matter how he looks, he will “turn back the hearts of fathers toward their sons,” and vice versa (Sir 48:10).

Elijah is that person who is the catalyst for a series of events which promote reconciliation and forgiveness, especially in families. This change of heart is an absolute prerequisite for a true Christmas. If we bring our Christmas gift to the altar at Christmas Mass and then recall that someone has something against us, we must leave our Christmas gift at the altar and go to be reconciled (Mt 5:23-24). We need ministers of reconciliation (see 2 Cor 5:18) like Elijah to make Christmas possible, for there is no true Christmas without reconciliation.

Prayer: Father, by Your grace, I choose to forgive everyone who has ever hurt me.
Promise: “Elijah is indeed coming, and he will restore everything.” —Mt 17:11
Praise: The epitaph of Pope St. Damasus I reads, “He, I believe, will make Damasus rise again.”

FEAST OF THE DAY

Today's feast commemorates the apparition of Mary to St. Juan
Diego on Tepeyac hill near Mexico City. Mary appeared to Juan in
the form of an Aztec princess and had the complexion of a Native
American. Mary spoke to Juan in his own language and sent him to
the bishop of Mexico with the request that a chapel be built on the
hill.

When Juan spoke to the bishop he was doubted and the bishop
asked for a sign to prove the authenticity of the vision. Mary
appeared to Juan again and gave him some Spanish roses to take
back to the bishop in his cloak. When Juan emptied out his cloak, an
image of Our Lady was left imprinted upon it. The image left on the
cloak was the same as Juan had received when he looked upon Our
Lady. This apparition occurred in the year 1531, and helped to
convert many Native Americans to Christianity. Our Lady of
Guadalupe was declared patron of the Americas by Pope Pius XII. In
1999 this celebration was raised to the rank of feast throughout all
the countries of the Americas.

St. Jane Frances de Chantal's feast is celebrated on this date
outside of the United States. In the USA St. Jane's feast is moved to
August 18.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

When shall it be that we shall taste the sweetness of the Divine Will
in all that happens to us, considering in everything only His good
pleasure, by whom it is certain that adversity is sent with as much
love as prosperity, and as much for our good? When shall we cast
ourselves undeservedly into the arms of our most loving Father in
Heaven, leaving to Him the care of ourselves and of our affairs, and
reserving only the desire of pleasing Him, and of serving Him well in
all that we can? -St. Jane Frances de Chantal

TODAY IN HISTORY

1769 Pope Clement XIV proclaims a universal jubilee
1974 Pope Paul VI announced his intention of canonizing Elizabeth
Ann Seton

TODAY'S TIDBIT

Guadalupe is Spanish for the Aztec name Tecoataxope and means,
"she will crush the serpent of stone".

INTENTION FOR THE DAY

Please pray, through Our Lady of Guadalupe patroness of the
Americas, for all for all people living in the Americas.
