Vatican Appoints New Archbishop for Atlanta

Bishop Wilton D. Gregory, who was president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops during the height of the clergy molestation crisis, has been appointed by Pope John Paul II to serve as Archbishop of Atlanta, the archdiocese announced Thursday.

Gregory, who had been serving as bishop in Belleville, Ill., will become Atlanta's sixth archbishop.

"I welcome the opportunity to serve the people of the Archdiocese of Atlanta. I am deeply grateful to the Holy Father for his confidence and support," Gregory said.

He succeeds Archbishop John F. Donoghue, who is resigning for reason of age. He is 76.

Former USCCB President.

Anybody know him?

He will have to be EXTREMELY orthodox to be as good as retiring Archbishop Donoghue.

Yuck. I think he's one of Bernadin's boys. Didn't you hear this clown speaking during the Dallas conference where they all fell all over themselves to cover the homosexual aspect of the abuse crisis?

Oh, good grief.

What *is* the Holy Father thinking?

You better pray he has a "road to Damascus" experience on the way to Atlanta.

This is VERY BAD news for Atlanta.

My disgust has already turned to anger. I can picture the liberals now. "This is a signal from the Holy Father that he likes the way the bishops are handling 'the crisis.' It also signals that the pope agreed with the way McCarrick handled the pro-abortion politicians." And I think there's no way I could disagree with these statements.

Gregory was cc'd in on Ratzinger's letter to McCarrick and he sat silently while McCarrick misrepresented it to the entire assembly of bishops. I will need to pray to prevent my anger from turning to bitterness.

Don't count on it.
Gregory going to Atlanta shows that we have furthur to go downhill before we bottom out.
It looks as if many of Bernardin's boys (auxillaries) are becoming archbishops.
I hope you will do better in S IL.

Maybe the archbishop job is the payoff for his silence. I Imagine McCarrick had influence in picking the new archbishop. He is the closest cardinal to Atlanta.

Oh dear, that man is poison! This is very misguided of Rome to appoint such a liberal to one of the most orthodox dioceses in America.

I only hope the Pope didn't have a hand in this. Whoever did will probably have to answer to God for the adverse consequences.

This is like putting Weakland in charge of Lincoln, Nebraska.

I agree with you totally.

I am also going to write a letter to the Holy Father and cc Hoyos,Ratzinger,Arrinze and Re,expressing my profound sadness with his choice of a man,who at the very best is a "weak sister".

I know the effects of a letter from a "nobody" from Phoenix, that will be read by some faceless clerks in the Vatican, will be miniscule,if not less. Nonetheless,I will know that I transmitted a small particle of truth, addressed to those who Jesus Christ charged with keeping and spreading His Truth.

And most important I will just keep praying.

Gosh, if I write the Holy Father in Latin, do you think he'd be more likely to read it?

This sure doesn't sound good.

He's truly awful. I can't imagine what they were thinking in appointing him. One may charitably hope that "they" actually weren't thinking, but unfortunately, this seems like such an extremely unsuitable appointment that a lot of thought must have gone into it. Not a good sign at all.

Great minds think alike! I also am working on a letter to the Holy Father. I have never sent Rome a letter like this before. I've been checking the Vatican website trying to figure out where to send it. Maybe the Holy Spirit is sending us a message and Catholics from around the country, and Atlanta in particular, will inundate the Vatican with a flood of letters too large to ignore.

At this point in time a letter in Polish would probably be more likely to get where you want it to go!

Also if you addressed it to Abp. Stanislaw Dzwiz, his nibs is more likely to get it.

Don't expect to see Abp Wilton Gregory issue documents like "Worthy to Receive the Lamb: Catholics in Political Life and the Reception of Holy Communion"

In fact expect him to either ignore that document and others like it and/or he will apologize for it/them ever having been produced.

Maybe as a special favor for the new Abp Gregory, Bp Trautman will accept an invitation to recommend replacements for your existing (orthodox) Diocesan Liturgical leadership. :(

Perhaps there will be established a new Diocesan Office of Worship Space Enhancement. :(

The laity of Atlanta need to be very vigilant. Beware of any personnel changes.
Do research on anyone who is invited in to speak anywhere in the diocese. Protest any heretics.

Pray.

His column in current issue of diocesan newspaper:

If Atlanta is a conservative diocese, presumably they will have a conservative diocesan staff for him to work with.

No longer in Atlanta - we have moved back to south FL.

This concerns me, though. Archbishop Donoghue is a very pious, reverent and conservative man. I don't understand why he wouldn't be replaced with the same.
