SCO Run-Time License Ready

SCO Run-Time License Ready Fri Sep 5, 1:16 PM ET Add Technology - Ziff Davis to My Yahoo!

Peter Galli - eWEEK

The SCO Group has been threatening corporate Linux (news - web sites) users with legal action unless they obtain a license for its intellectual property, but until now, businesses have been unable to buy that license.

The Lindon, Utah, company last week began selling its SCO Intellectual Property License for Linux, a run-time license that lets buyers use the company's intellectual property that is contained in Linux distributions, company officials told eWEEK. SCO, which is suing IBM for more than $3 billion and says Linux is an illegal derivative of Unix (news - web sites), announced the license last month. The license protects customers using Linux 2.4 and Linux 2.5 kernels from infringing on SCO intellectual property rights, officials said.

Despite the availability of the new license, some Linux users have been unable to obtain one—or, in some cases, even inquire about it. Linux reseller Gary Sandine, chief technology officer at Los Alamos Computers, in Los Alamos, N.M., which owns and ships many GNU Linux computers, said that despite numerous calls to SCO, he has been unable to talk directly to a salesperson.

I consider this to be a legitimate news story dealing with the SCO v Linux controversy and would appreciate it staying in the main forum. Thank you.

Linux is wonderful! We have used it for years! Linus is a genius!

SCO sent us several bills. We immediately paid them all.

Only when the courts rule in favor of SCO will I give them a dime. Until then they can kiss my rear.

You couldn't license from SCO if you wanted to. They are not in business to sell Linux licenses, the are in it to get a BIG check from IBM.

There is also an interesting article on the GPL that may just turn me around on that subject too on NewsForge where I picked this up. However I'll leave it for one of you guys to post that being that I have been attacking the GPL for the past three weeks it probably wouldn't be right for me to do so. ;-). I have to admit that I probably got a little brainwashed by a trio of trolls into thinking that attacks on Linux and the GPL were defenses of America. I'm now looking forward for the first time in three weeks to Mr. McBride and Mr.Sontag getting the uncoveted orange suit and cuffs award. Will probably be starting up the Linux side of my box again tonight and see if it is still working. As you can probably understand it has been rather neglected for quite a while.

How about your "pigs fly" graphic, at least? ;)

Kudos for your honesty.

Why would he want to talk with SCO?

I am always impressed when some one is able to change their mind after looking at an issue, and to say so publicly. It's not an easy thing to do, so congratulations.

I'd be interested in knowing what evidence helped change your mind, if you're willing...

We also sent SCO some gift certificates for Happy Meals just to be sure they would be nice to us. I heard from someone that SCO management likes Happy Meals since they find the "free" prizes since they "get something for doing nothing".

I have some old copies of CP/M. I'm going to send Caldera, er, SCO some money for those too. I also have some old Betamax tapes. David Boise might decide that SCO owns the right to that format so I'll send some more money for that just in case. Hope I'm out of trouble now.....

Thanks for the tip. If no one else wants it, I'll mark it up and post it later on tonight.

If you need custom BIOS code for that CP/M, let me know. I think I can did up some now moldy listings of 8080 assembler.

OBTW, there was an article on GROKLAW yesterday about someone in Ireland trying to inquire about Linux run-time licenses from $CO. Also here is the guy's blog.

I still do not see GPL as a truely free license but I can see the point that some moves away from pure freedom in code distribution in order to keep it open might be neccessary against a greater conspiracy against America in computing that I believe Microsoft plays a large part in that I will be discussing later on, probably in another "General Interest" article under the conspiracy topic therin first but definitely in a full length book I was writing with proprietary Star Office (like the fonts for it better than Open Office) under Linux before I got involved in trolling against it. I do still believe that Bush2000, Golden Eagle and TheEngineer do have the best interests of America at heart and are not necessarily MICROSOFT trolls. They just do not realize that there are greater threats to America from a Fascist One World centralized proprietary computing system like Microsoft and other Globalist companies are attempting to build with Paladium then there is from a foriegn open source kernel regardless of the parentage of the person who got the ball rolling for it. In fact this was the subject that I came to places like this to post articles and song parodies about in the first place before getting side tracked on calling everyone commies. I hope that my future postings here will hope school them about the REAL threat to America in the computing industry. The revival of not global Communism using open source but of Global FASCISM using Palladium and other Globalist originated re centralization gimmics.

Thank you for the other articles. It was the conversation we had last night about my Freedom Public License that did NOT devolve into the usual flame fight and name calling session that was very decisive in my choice to try Linux again. I was able to find that you guys are NOT all Slashdot types through it. I wonder how long it will be before one of us gets to post the BIG article in this series:
DARL MCBRIDE GOES TO THE CLICK FOR MAIL FRAUD AND ENRON STYLE STOCK SHENAGIGANS!!!

It was largely the conversations I was able to have with Linux users when Bush2000, Golden Eagle and TheEngineer were not present. Turns out they are actually very nice people when you are not trolling at them ;-)
Also I have always believed that Globalist Companies and organizations using Microsoft and Palladium to control the world economy were a greater threat to America than even the most left wing portions of the Open Source movement such as Richard Stallman but heard that such "conspiracy" talk can get one banned here and thus never posted it. However since I found that there is a topic SPACIFICALLY for such stuff in the "General Interest" forum I will be less afraid of posting my real feelings and thoughts about these matters now.
