BLOODY COST OF PEACE: Jewish activist witnesses horror of terrorism
SCOTT FROST , Staff Writer 08/20/2003
Abe Greenhouse will never forget the bloodshed.
The Rutgers University student will never get used to the sights he encountered during his one-month peace mission to Israel. He will never get used to the looks on childrens faces at the scene of violent acts generated by social and civil unrest in a tiny land shared by nearly 5 million Jews and 4 million Arabs.
Yesterday, however, it was the look on faces of Orthodox Jews praying at the scene of another terrorist attack in Jerusalem.
That was when the New Brunswick resident realized the full horror of this bloody conflict.
"Im horrified," Greenhouse, the founder of the newly formed Central Jersey Jews Against the Occupation, said from his East Jerusalem hostel last night. "Im in the depth of a peace offering and its frustrating when you see all these things happening in front of my eyes," he said.
"Its too much a part of my daily life, but Id sooner think no man can get used to what Ive seen."
Greenhouse, who heard the explosion about 9 p.m. Israeli time yesterday, ran towards thethree-way intersection where the blast occurred.
When he got there he saw the carnage: another suicide bombing aboard a crowded bus just outside the West Wall -- Judaisms holiest shrine.
"It was chaotic. It was unlike anything Ive seen before," he said.
Using his college ID, Greenhouse managed to get into the press area about 20 minutes after the explosion occurred.
Standing right next a live CNN broadcast, he watched as Israeli agents, armed with submachine guns, started pulling body after body from the mangled bus.
Officials last night said 20 people were killed in the blast and more than 100 more were injured in what is deemed one of the deadliest bombings in the last three years.
Several children, lined up in front of Greenhouse, were among the reported dead and wounded.
"I was a pretty early arrival and snuck into the press tent after showing my college ID when I saw the bags of bodies along side (of the tent)," said Greenhouse.
"They were just lined up in front of me. I was shocked by the numbers of bodies coming out (of the exploded bus)."
Greenhouse, 25, said police continued to pull bodies from the bus, as officials cornered off the street from onlookers.
A crew of orthodox Jews, he said, perched themselves next to the body bags in prayer.
"I wish I knew what they were saying," said Greenhouse, who doesnt speak Hebrew.
He said it was lucky he was at the scene early enough to sneak into the press tent and witness what the history and political science major explained has been a daily occurrence for him.
Greenhouse, whos been over in Israel for about month and has joined the International Solidarity Movement, Rabbis for Human Rights and the Israeli Committee Against House Demolition since the start of his visit.
"There is a lot of danger in the work I do," Greenhouse said. "It was a very trying experience, but nothing compared to the regular dangers Palestinians face every day.
"The bombing tonight made me want to remain here in working through this peace effort. My efforts are more important now than ever."
The militant Islamic Jihad group claimed responsibility for yesterdays bus bombing to avenge the killing of a senior operative in a raid last week, but Greenhouse said theres two sides to the story.
In many instances, he felt the Palestinian citizens have been wronged by Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and have even felt his wrath when he was among the 47 activist arrested for trying to shield the home of a farmer in the West Bank Village of Masa on Aug. 5.
He was detained for 22 hours and eventually released, but now has a different perspective on whats really going on in Israel.
"I think the average American doesnt really have access to a balanced picture of whats really happening," Greenhouse said. "Its demoralizing. Just the other day I was in a city in the West Bank and was given a tour of a bomb site from a year ago when Israeli Tomcats tore through two or three city blocks that had been flattened.
"Seeing the devastation first hand makes you wonder the loss of the lives that occurred. Just the expressions on the kids faces told me how many of their parents were killed in front of their eyes."

Note that he interjects plenty of Palestinian propaganda into his comments, and manages to mention that the Israeli police were armed with submachine guns, but seems to have precious little sympathy for the 20 people, including several children and a tiny baby, who lay mangled right before his eyes. He speaks of them almost as objects rather than as people and his thoughts are obviously never far from the propaganda requirements of his Arab masters, the perpetrators of this outrage.
(Isn't it odd as well that he just happened to be so close to the scene?)
From our "too good to be true" department:
According to Fifth Column Central (Indymedia), the so-called "Rachel Corrie Peace Center" in East Jerusalem is about to be CRUSHED BY IDF BULLDOZERS!!
The ISM quislings plan a blockade and they call on everyone to help. Sounds like we have the potential for a pancake feast here. I would be happy to help, by driving the bulldozer.
(sorry about forgetting the "projectile barf alert" on the original post.)
Wow, he can tell which Palestinian kids are not only orphans but also saw their parents killed just by looking into their eyes.
Think he might've used "mangled bodies" instead of body bags if the victims had been Palestinian?
Fifth columnists and dhimmis are apparently gifted with this kind of clairvoyance, as when the BBC ran a still picture last April of an unidentified little Iraqi girl looking upward and declared that she was "apprehensively scanning the sky for American bombers."
IJ isn't even a "militant group" anymore--now it's just a group that happens to be militant.
Oh, I hope it's true. Even if it isn't, I hope the collaborationists believe it's true.
The ISM quislings plan a blockade and they call on everyone to help. Sounds like we have the potential for a pancake feast here. I would be happy to help, by driving the bulldozer.
Let me help you visualize:
(sorry about forgetting the "projectile barf alert" on the original post.)
No need to apologize - it was implicit in the letters ISM.
Thanks for the news tip.
