SLED is called in whenever a law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty.

But when a peasant is slain "we'll get back to you when it's convenient for us."

A man accused of killing a Greenville County sheriff's deputy was shot to death in a standoff with officers this morning, Sheriff Steve Loftis said.
Mark Herring of Greenville was shot and killed in a shootout before 8 a.m. with three SWAT team members in woods off Sulphur Springs Road, Loftis said.

Herring, 19, of 8 Link St., was charged Sunday night with murder in the shooting death of Deputy Andrew Mazur.

He had eluded deputies overnight, Loftis said. Herring went into a Sulphur Springs warehouse about 7 a.m. today and asked an employee for something to drink, Loftis said.

The employee recognized Herring, Loftis said. The suspect apparently was still wearing a handcuff on his wrist and no shirt, the sheriff said.

Responding deputies saw him running into a nearby woods, he said, and deputies told him to stop and surrender. Loftis said the man refused and fired at deputies twice.

"Deputies had no alternative but to fire upon the suspect, killing him," Loftis said.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating this morning's shooting. Loftis said there also will be an internal investigation by the Sheriff's Office. Both such investigations are routine after an officer shoots someone.
