[history]
The way Lavoya Talton was twisting the handle on the gum ball machine, you'd have thought the 5-year-old was a pensioner at a nickel slot machine in a Vegas casino.
Instead, the preschooler from Uptown was just trying to get her favorite toy from a machine at the North Side Giant Eagle. She was working feverishly because the store's supply of Homies dolls had run out several times before, said her mother Doreen, who was busily feeding Lavoya and her brother Jayrese quarters.

Sounds like a good, cheap collectible to be.

I've seen these and they are funny, cute little plastic figures that are tongue-in-cheek parodies of latino stereotypes.

""When I was coming up, all we had was these blonde, white girl doll-babies. Barbie's going skiing, Barbie's driving her Corvette. That's not my kids' reality," she said." Based in reality? My Star wars and Star Trek toys weren't exactly based in reality either.

Do a search for Homies on eBay. They're pretty cute, and selling for almost nothing on eBay. If you're interested in this odd collectible, this is the time. There are only a few series out, and they're cheap, cheap, cheap.
I'm thinking about grabbing the first few series sets...just to see what happens with them. No big loss if they don't escalate in price, but good potential for profit down the road when the early series figures are no longer available.

I've got a little Sad Boy on top of my monitor, but I never knew his name.

Sounds like a good, cheap collectible to be. They certainly are a fad. Hard to say if demand will be there in the future but I don't see why not.
More money could be made owning/stocking the novelty machines that sell these though (since it is difficult to complete a set because the next figure purchased is always random).
In Japan, novelty machines can charge upwards of $3-5 for random toy figures. The craftsmanship is there but it seems like a lot for a random throw. Many of them are even aimed at older buyers (they aren't toys really).
Even the homies have been written up in magazines for older people.

That's almost word for word what Mitchell Paige (Congressional Medal of Honor, Guadalcanal) told me when he was autographing the box containing his special edition G.I. Joe!

That's not my kids' reality," she said.Maybe if you had put a bit of effort toward getting an education (the my taxes provided for FREE), it would be your kids' reality. It IS my kids' reality!!!

Or "Right Eye" -- she "always leaves parties with a different guy" and "comes from an abusive home and has a negative view on life."
Riiiight...
And this is the lifestyle I'd hope my daughter would aspire to, rather then one represented by one owning a dreamhouse, a beach condo, a corvette, being a doctor, lawyer, or whatever_she_wants.
I'm chucking those evil Barbie dolls out in the trash right now.
