WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush plans to nominate lawyer Rene Acosta to be the first Hispanic in the Justice Department's top civil rights post, the White House announced Friday.
Acosta will replace Ralph Boyd, who is returning to private legal practice, Justice Department officials said.
Acosta, a native of Miami, is currently a member of the National Labor Relations Board. Prior to that, he served on Bush's transition team and was later the main deputy in Justice's Civil Rights Division.
Acosta, a Harvard Law School graduate, previously taught civil rights law and discrimination law at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. He was honored earlier this year by the Mexican-American Legal Defense Fund for his work in language access issues.
Acosta's nomination will require confirmation by the Senate.

That's what putting up with well over a decade of horrendous beltway malfeasance will do, all right.
TF, nothing surprises me anymore with Bush when it comes to pandering for the Mexican vote. I am convinced he will do anything. Witness his attempts to open up Social Security to millions of Mexican Nationals—Legal or Illegal, doesn’t matter. America's sovereignty is the last thing on his mind. In fact, I don't think Bush believes in a Sovereign America.
The Bush apologists will cheer this as yet another masterful, pre-emptive strike by our 'Panderer-in-Chief'.
No Doubt. The BOTs, at least the hard core ones, seem to believe that Bush is inspired by Divine Forces that are beyond the comprehension of us mere mortals. If Bush one day declared that all private property in America heretofore will be property of the Federal Government they would cheer this to as yet another masterful, pre-emptive strike to co-opt the democrats’ agenda. I really think so.
NLRB Member R. Alex Acosta
Alex Acosta was nominated by President Bush to be, and confirmed by the Senate as, a Member of the National Labor Relations Board for a term expiring August 27, 2003. Prior to his appointment, Member Acosta served as Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General at the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice.
A native of Miami, FL, Mr. Acosta earned his bachelor's degree from Harvard College and his law degree from the Harvard Law School. After graduation, he served as a law clerk on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and then worked at the Washington office of the Kirkland and Ellis law firm, where he specialized in labor issues and appellate practice.
In 1997, Mr. Acosta left private practice at Kirkland & Ellis to serve as a fellow in legal studies at the Ethics and Public Policy Center. Mr. Acosta has also taught several classes on employment law, disability-based discrimination law and civil rights law at the George Mason School of Law.

Yeah, LOL, I have to admit I'm kind of a boring guy. I don't need the excitement of bullets flying over my head in one minute and bombs going off in the next. I guess I need more of the Global Village “Vision Thing”.
Including, apparently, nominating someone with qualifications to a civil-rights post.

GW is making some more points with the Hispanic community, plain and simple.
It's not enough to allow hundreds of thousands of illegals to live in this country off our welfare system and push for amnesty for them all so they can all draw social security to which they didn't contribute.
It's not enough to bend over backward to please Vincente Fox with every demand he's made about immigration.
It's not enough to saddle our border states with the upkeep of these illegals including medical care that our citizens don't get.
It's not enough to allow Mexican mothers to have anchor babies in our hospitals free of charge so every member of the family has a free pass to the US.
No, that's not enough. Some Hispanics might feel slighted.
Let's get this straight:
GW and the Republican Party don't give a whit about the Hispanics and their welfare.
What they do care about is cheap labor and VOTES!!
Qualifications have nothing to do with it. I'm more concerned with the ideology of this guy. There are a lot of well-educated bureaucrats in our government that work night and day to bring our country down. In particular, I am concerned about his apparent affiliation with MALDEF--a radical Mexican PAC that advocates the seizure of America’s SW territories for the creation of a Mexican Republic called Azlan. It would be interesting to know what Rene Acosta thinks about this and what his ties are to this un-American Racist organization.
Finding a qualified candidate who happens to be Hispanic is hardly an example identity-politics.
