June 14, 2003 -- A New Jersey mother whose daughter mutilated herself while on the controversial anti-depressant drug Paxil called yesterday for a ban on its use to treat children.

The call for a ban comes hot on the heels of alarming new research released earlier this week that claims depressed children who take the drug become more suicidal - and a warning from the Food and Drug Administration, The Post has learned.

"Michelle repeatedly slashed her body with a razor and inflicted over 25 wounds,"

The lady is a bona fide Borderline Personality Disorder and no Rx is going to affect this condition. All shrinks have known long before Paxil that depressives have increased risk for suicide when they initiate antidepressant medication.

This claim against paxil is bogus, amplified by idiot reporters.

I think with all the new "cures" these days these sorts of things are inevitable. Far too many trying to find a pill to fix their problems.

Pills help some people but they aren't for everybody. It's become a fad.

No the allegations most likely are true. They are also controversial. Paxil is a 'spin off' medication Prozac. Prozac is linked to millions of cases involving similar severe side effects. Medical jounals are filled with statistics, research and anecdotal complaints.

3 years of this trouble? Sounded like they waited far too long before trying something from a different class of pharmaceuticals. For some people SSRIs are, plain and simple, THE PITS.

I'm not a doctor (and I don't even play one on T.V) but I think WAY to many children are given these drugs. I think a lot of children are acting up because they are trying to get attention, they were never taught discipline at school or home, and it is politically incorrect to let children play so the only "entertainment" they are exposed to are violent movies and video games.

Something is terribly wrong when the schools can pass out these drugs like candy (and they get $ for each "patient"). I'm not saying these drugs are never useful. However, seeing some pill as a magic cure-all is a disaster. If Child A is talking out of turn, quick, shut him up and give him powerful, mind altering drugs! If Child B is suicidal, tell her to shut up already -- we don't want to be bothered with her problems -- this here pill will calm her down and she can go away and leave us alone. I'm not commenting on the particulars of the case in this story. I think in general, adults (parents and schools) both overindulge and neglect children. Children are acting out in strange ways as a result.

I agree. She is a borderline personality disorder. I suspect her mom is too: either that or after money.

May I emphasize that?

As new research and study of brain chemical disorders continues one new aspect is...the description Affective Disorder should be changed to Affective Spectrum Disorder. Studies are revealing combination and multiple Affective Disorders are more likely than not, starting with the discovery anoerexcia and kleptomania are common twin disorders. My guess is Michelle has both depression and self-mutilation disorder. Her medication needs to be adjusted in light of the twin disorders. More than likely her health care workers did not know of the self-mutilation.

The Brits just banned Paxil for children under 18 because it isn't safe.

The antidepressant money machine is starting to sputter.

You are right about the claim. Paxil is for people who are depressed. Depressed people are more likelyto kill themselves.

There are, however, meds which do help with BPD. I say this from personal experience.

The success rate is less because the disorder is much more severe, and because few professionals are capable or willing to treat it. But the condition contains symptoms which do respond to medication. The depression, anger, anxiety and obsessive thoughts can be reduced medically if the patient and doctor are willing to keep working until they find the right combination. While some people are unable to find a mix that works well, most can if they have good professional help.

One thing that is interesting is that the studies which show a placebo being just as effective ignore results obtained from trying various medications. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder meds, for example, typically showa 50% success rate. But when one adds up the results from trying meds until you find an effective one, the results exceed 70%. The placebos do not match this.

Additionally, DBT therapy has excellent results in many people who have BPD.

BPD is a classic example for those who say that medication is either useless or the lazy way out. Without something to lessen the symptoms, most BPD's could not complete the therapy they need to be able to function in a healthy way. If anyone has ever seen the rage or depth of depression with BPD, they know that it is not something that would allow much progress.

And, trust me, we wouldn't accept the side-affects if it wasn't worth it. I can say without question that medication is the reason I am still alive, and may well be why I never hurt anyone else as well.

I agree with you completely. There were never this many "sick and depressed" kids years ago. Then again, years ago, we were much more active both outdoors in a physical sense and indoors when we used our imaginations to create diversions on rainy days. We were learning problem solving and coping skills while we really played. Todays kids have way too much time to dwell on any negative aspect of life which is amplified by the violent and perverted passive forms of "entertainment" which is force fed to our children by various "industries" and permitted by parents who are too busy to care.
