And yes, I will have shirts with this logo on it. The main reason I want to go to this rally is to meet TED HAYES!

With all due respect, Iraq was absolutely crawling with weapons under Saddam. Doesn't seem to have made them free.

Firearms are not magical. Possession of a hunting rifle or assault weapon is no guarantee of freedom if your oppressors are armed with tanks and helicopter gunships.

Key word in your statement is "Iraq". Are you comparing American gun owners to Muslim terrorist?

Nope, but a lot of pro-gun people seem to think that the possession of guns makes it impossible for the government to oppress the people. Or that a people must be disarmed before oppression can begin.

Iraq is a good example of the fact that this is untrue. It's not the presence of weapons, it's the comparative effectiveness of the weapons held by oppressors and oppressed.

IF the US government decided to become as oppressive as Saddam, AND the police and military supported it (neither of which will happen), the possession of small arms by the citizenry would be little protection.

No - he is comparing common, ordinary Iraqis to common, ordinary Americans. For the muslim terrorist comparison, you'd have to use whackjob paleocon "all weapons, from machine guns to stingers to bombs are legal under the 2nd Amendment of the Constimatushun" types. You know, the ones who charge tanks while driving SUVs.

The Iragi citizens don't possess the guns. You don't really think that all those pictures of people firing guns in the air are of regular, ordinary Iragis do you? The only people in Iraq that have guns are those that Saddam approved of, period.

Your comparison is false at best, and insulting at worst.

Sh1t. Don't tell that to those who fought the battle of independance here in the US. Or those who fought against the Russians from invading their countries. Or any of hundreds of examples throughout history.

The Iraqi's didn't have the collective WILL to put up resistance. Beaten, tortured, scared, abused, they never had the CHANCE to fight back. Are you going to fight back against a government that will give you a gun, but then lock up your children to assure your good behavior?

Common, ordinary Iraqis don't have the guns. But you already knew.

Found any more gun-grabber schemes you want to push today?

With all due respect, Iraq was absolutely crawling with weapons under Saddam.

This is just another leftist lie. Only those faithful to Saddam were allowed weapons.

Good points, but we need to remember that this is a false analogy to begin with. The common, ordinary Iraqi doesn't have access to guns. Only Saddams goons and thugs have them.

No politician can maintain a 300 yard perimeter indefinitely - if they could manage it at all. Just a thought.

You're confused.

A few Baa'thists and Saddam Fedayeen waving their AKs for the cameras, is all. Gun ownership was tightly controlled in pre war Iraq, as it is in all tyrannies.

Your point is well taken. I must admit the idea that a high altitude weapon can take out my neighbor's house and leave mine untouched is troubling. Americans, however, have a history of willingness to die for their freedoms. Small arms in the hands of ten million or so reasonably organized individuals can still be a deterrent to tyranny.
