*PING LISTS* Revisited (vanity)
1-8-03

A month or so ago I posted a Vanity, addressing the topic of "Ping Lists." It turned into a rather large thread, and the random pinging seemed to disappear. I hate to waste bandwidth by posting on this topic again, but .....again I am bombarded by pings that I DID NOT REQUEST.
This morning there were TWO people pinging me to the same thread, posted twice. This particular thread was ENORMOUS and VERY graphics-intensive. It took eight full minutes to load.
You see, NOT EVERYONE CAN GET HIGH SPEED SERVICE, and with old dialup phone lines that can't handle anymore than 28.8K, these huge threads load like molasses. And, no I CAN'T get anything better from PacBell. I'm stuck with it.
And now, this afternoon I got pinged by two different people who obviously have the same ping list. This is getting annoying. If you're going to share your ping list, then stay current about who wants off of it.
In my opinion, the ping list thing is stupid, and should be eliminated, or at least limited. As far as I can recall, I have only requested to be on ONE ping list, and that is the Astronomy of the Day list, and yet, each day I show up on another one or two. Are you people just clicking on EVERY name that posts comments on certain threads? It seems like that's what's happening.
Please, everyone with lists, please check them and if I'm on it, remove me.
Thank you.

As the creator of the NC ping list, I usually add the following message to my posts:
"NC ping!
Please FRmail me if you want to be added to or removed from this North Carolina ping list."
I will agree that there are quite a few lists I am on lately that are being used on articles I just don't have the time to read.
To: EggsAckley
It seems to me the answer is pretty simple.

I agree. But it sure is strange that different people are using identical ping lists. Jim should limit lists to maybe ten to twenty names. Then people wouldn't be so inclined to load up on every name they can find.

I consider ping lists the most useful feature of FR and would be very disappointed if they went away. Indeed, it's the only reason I signed up - to get on a couple ping lists I found interesting.

I think no one should be added to a ping list unless the person requests to be added. I think it bad manners for others to assume that you are necessarily interested in what interests them. And yes, it is trouble to have to send Freepmail to get off the lists.
To: EggsAckley
Jim should limit lists to maybe ten to twenty names. Then people wouldn't be so inclined to load up on every name they can find. So because some people abuse ping lists, everyone should be restricted? I ran a poll ping list during the three months before the election, and had almost 100 people on it - every single one of them asked to be on. I never added a single person who didn't request it. And at the end of every post, I indicated that anyone who wanted on or off should just send me Freepmail. But if you had your way, I guess I'd have been shut down.

Otherwise known as the "Post Police". So what's wrong with the Post Police?
I find it extremely annoying to have
to go through two threads (or more) on the same topic.
How high an IQ does one need
to check whether an article already has been posted?
Those who don't bother with this rudimentary operation deserve
to have their negligence, stupidity and lack of consideration pointed out.

One of the multiple list, huge threads just pinged me again. After minutes of waiting for the thread to load AGAIN, I found the following posted by "aquamarine:"
You pulled this same stunt on the Market Wrap-Up thread yesterday. I think they even had a little fun with you.
I pulled a stunt by asking to be taken off a ping list? And this was from someone who is happy to be on that list. Boy, talk about dividing the FR community!

Just post them a regular reply then. What's so hard about that? Most of the 50+ people on my ping list requested to be added via a regular post on the article itself.

Maybe I can be some help here. Did you know that you don't have to open a thread up to reply to a New Message to you? Just click on New Message, pick Full (instead of Brief) and you can read and reply to any message that you want (or ignore it if you want).

I will say that I have always removed ANYONE from the NC list who asked me to.
At last count, there are over 115 names on the list.
Each and every person ASKED to be added.

This ping list without request puts me in mind of company dropping by without calling. If you are busy and gently chide them for it, they say "well, all you had to do was tell me you were busy". LOL
To: EggsAckley
"BTW, yours was one of the big threads that pinged me twice, I think. The foxhole thread?"
No, Market Wrap-Up (and you have been removed). Sorry if the pings cased you any trepidation, I was only trying to help you with your decision on what to do about some gold that (I believe) you had inherited.
I get pinged to about 5 large threads a day (and individuals usually ping me at least 5 times a day to other threads. I just ignore the ones I'm not interested in (I'm on the Foxhole ping list, also. I've probably only read two or three of them, but I'll stay on it.).

I couldn't find ping list pinger type guy on this page...so here are some selected forum types...

WARNING!!! YOU MUST READ THIS!!! Klaxon, the internet Chicken Little, raises the alarm for each and every paranoid conspiracy theory, Federal Big-Brother scheme, internet hoax, and latest computer virus. No black helicopter alert is so ludicrous, no urban legend so implausible, that he will not pass it along as accepted fact (in ALL CAPS with multiple exclamation marks). Congratulations, you are recipient 16,747 of today's Urban Myth. CAUTION: Often Klaxon knowingly posts false alarms to foment mischief.

Issues has an issue and she wants it to be everyone's issue. The discussion could be about fondue pots and Issue would rage about the multinational corporate conspiracy to exploit fondue pot workers. Of course, Issues is found among all ideological persuasions - anti-gun mothers, gun totin' mothers, bloodthirsty feminists, troglodyte misogynists, politically correct, politically incorrect, lefties, righties, vegetarians, carnivores, radical Rotarians - it doesn't matter. HINT: An effective tactic to employ against Issues is indifference.

Archivist saves and squirrels away each and every discussion forum message. Do you remember having a bad day back in 1996 when in one of your messages you may have said a few things that were...well, perhaps a little...hasty? Don't worry, Archivist still has it and will post it to the forum if you begin to get the upper hand in battle. Archivist can be a very effective and fearsome Warrior.

Nitpick compensates for his general weakness as a Warrior by pouncing on errors, however irrelevant to the discussion, and using them to discredit the enemy. For example, if his opponent in a sports forum conflict casually mentioned the Cubs' 4-2 victory in the 1908 World Series, Nitpick would quickly counterattack with something like, "4-2 !? Any moron knows the Cubs won the Series 4-1! Someone so ignorant about baseball history can't possibly know anything about salary caps!" Even if the minor point is conceded Nitpick will return to it whenever pressed in the main arena of battle. Nitpick can be easily bested by even Rottweiler Puppy, but he is very tenacious and will never admit defeat. Nitpick is a close ally of Artful Dodger.
