It's deja vu all over again.

The gypsies are the new victims in Slovakia. How are they being treated in the rest of E. Europe? I recall that the Serbs treated Roma in Kosovo better than the Albanians did.

These Balkan people like the Slovaks and Czechs have been doing this to the Roma for centuries. Sometimes they even hold them in slavery.

What is absolutely remarkable is that you have some Eastern European occupants claiming that they are "white" and the Roma are "non-white". Frankly, they all look alike from here! Time to check for that B-type blood eh?!

When I was in Bulgaria and met with some officials, they arranged for a group of young people to meet our group to show us how wonderfully tolerant they were (several members of the group were Jewish). The young Bulgarians informed us that Jews were all right, but they hated Gypsies.

Then, before leaving for the Czech Republic recently, I went to the embassy in Washington. A young woman working there wanted us to know that we shouldn't believe everything we hear about the country's treatment of Roma. For instance, she said, we might hear that Roma children weren't allowed in some Czech schools. "That's not true," she said. "It's just that some teachers don't allow the Roma kids in their classes, not the school system as a whole." Bottom line: they're still segregating over there.

The gypsies are the new victims in Slovakia.

Nothing new about the Slovaks vs. the Roma. Been going on for centuries. It continues to be an issue because the Roma were never slaughtered or driven out as they were in the more "enlightened" countries who now sit in judgement of the Slovaks.

Apparently they're the thorn in the side of most of the countries where they live...

Got that right. Remember the "child-slapping ‘traveller'" threads here on FR just a little while back?

But to relocate those who own their own homes, pay taxes, hold good jobs, just for being part of an ethnic group...

The Slovaks I have met seem to think that virtually none of the Roma in Slovakia meet this description. In my three trips to Slovakia I have seen nothing to contradict this estimation.

The Slovak government isn't trying to beautify towns by eliminating rampant crime and poverty. They're trying to get rid of the Romas altogether.

Huh? Many Slovaks are convinced that Roma don't want to work and commit a disproportionate share of the crime. The Roma have had this reputation everywhere they have ever been for centuries. Is everybody wrong? (Note: I am adressing here the Slovak's motivation. Not saying that their actions are moral.)Besides, they are not "getting rid of them altogether" as noted above. The Roma are still in Slovakia and still on the dole.

These Balkan people like the Slovaks and Czechs have been doing this to the Roma for centuries. Sometimes they even hold them in slavery.

Czech, Slovak = "Balkan"? "hold" as in present tense? Get me fact check!

What is absolutely remarkable is that you have some Eastern European occupants claiming that they are "white" and the Roma are "non-white". Frankly, they all look alike from here!

They look alike like Swedes and Sicilians look alike. Not that this is the important difference. And what means this "occupants"? Slovaks "occupy" Slovakia?

"It's just that some teachers don't allow the Roma kids in their classes, not the school system as a whole." Bottom line: they're still segregating over there.

How many Roma want their children to go to school? Are the Roma children being forced to go against their will? What do they do once they are there?

It's quite obvious to everybody that the Czechs and Slovaks retrogressed in their humanity and civility under the Russian yoke.

Speak for yourself. Living under communism left the Czechs and Slovaks unskilled in certain ways. There is also entrenched corruption and a certain fatalism. But they are just as human as anyone else and more civil than many in the EU in my observation.

The way they seem to wish to deal with the Roma is definitely Balkan.

Define "Balkan" as used here, please.

Makes me wonder why the Western Europeans can seriously entertain applications for EC membership from these guys and not the Turks!

I don't wonder. One hundred years ago Prague and Bratislava were as Christian (and Jewish) and European as any other cities on the continent. The cultural foundation of these two countries (the Czech and Slovak Republics) renders them completely integrable with the West. They were dealt a rough hand by the Nazis and commies and are still playing it out. May God bless them. P.S. It's "EU," not "EC."
