(01-02) 16:18 PST WASHINGTON (AP) -- Departing Democratic House leader Dick Gephardt of Missouri has decided to form a presidential exploratory committee, kicking off his second run for the White House in 14 years at an event later this month, The Associated Press has learned.
An invitation obtained by the AP says Gephardt will raise money for the exploratory committee at an event Jan. 22, asking for donations of at least $1,000 -- or half the maximum for presidential candidates.
"Join us for a reception benefiting Richard Gephardt for President Exploratory Committee," the invitation said.
A source close to Gephardt, who spoke only on condition of anonymity, confirmed Thursday night that the Missouri Democrat has decided to form the exploratory committee -- the traditional first step in a presidential bid -- in the next few days.
Gephardt is stepping aside after eight years as the Democratic House leader and will bank on a a strong national organization and close ties to traditional Democratic groups like organized labor to help him in his presidential bid.
His last bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1988 started strong in Iowa, but quickly faded.
Not going to happen in a million years. Party conventions simply don't work that way any more. Thanks to the "Super Tuesday" primary changes in the 1980s, it's pretty much physically impossible for either party to reach the convention without a clear winner having been chosen by the voters months earlier.
As for any "accidents," the old crone doesn't own the world any more. She's just another junior Senator.
McAuliffe, Gephardt Caught In Scam
In October of 1987, Terry McAuliffe and other Democrats formed a politically connected bank. McAuliffe and several other Democratic Party stalwarts founded what was called Federal City Bank, which drew many of its clients from its own political connections, including labor committees and political action committees. While running the Federal City Bank, McAuliffe also served as finance director for Dick Gephardt's failed presidential campaign in 1988. Federal City Bank, run by McAuliffe, made an unsecured loan to the Gephardt campaign. The New York Times reported the story on February 13th, 1988. The headline was "Gephardt received two unsecured loans from bank." ....
This isn't Gephardt's only experience with funny money. We've done the research and we have tracked down a Washington Post story, concerning a Gephardt funny money tax deal with a home in North Carolina. Gephardt claimed a homestead exemption for a home in North Carolina in which he didn't live enough days to claim it as a home, yet he took the tax deduction that comes with the homestead exemption. When this was discovered he was allowed to correct the mistake. He failed to report his half-interest in this beach front vacation property, and yet took a homestead deduction on it. He was allowed to correct the mistake, but he only did so after it made news.

He now plans to shave the beard, and create a pair of eyebrows from it.
Everyone can relax now, and watch USC pummel Iowa on ABC.
(Ditto for Daschle and Jo, Jos.. Joeseeeph Lieeeeeberman, the seeeeerial naaaaasal whiiiiner.. )
ROFL ;^D
I was trying to find a way to express this contradiction---but, you've done it much better than I ever could. Thanks!
Understatement of the year, and the year is young..
;)
This alone should be enough to disqualify him. What connects him to the "real" America and life outside the Beltway?
Gephardt is just another Liberal policy wonk who confuses power with morality and politics with Salvation!
LOL...he just looks like a pimp..
I stand to be corrected, but I believe our twentieth President, James Garfield, was an Ohio representative directly elected to the White House. (1880 election)
But you're right, it is rare. Also rare for a sitting Senator to be elected:
1. Warren G. Harding and
2. John F. Kennedy
are the only two I know of.
Yeah, but the GOP has been wiping out the Democratic governors. The Dems won some state houses this year but it's not like any of those governors can turn around and start running for President in 2004. The most popular Southern governor possibilities got zapped in November trying to get reelected. That leaves them with Greyout Davis as their lone possible for 2004. Well, except for small state loonies like Dean. *weg*
So it's up to the loonies in the Senate and House to save the day for the "I hate America" Party.
