Linder Assails "Buchanan Republicans" in Debate
08-04-02 | Theodore R.

Posted on 08/04/2002 8:09:32 PM PDT by Theodore R.

In his debate with primary opponent Bob Barr, GA Republican Representative John Linder characterized himself as a "Reagan Republican," whereas he implied that his opponent is more of a "slash-and-burn" version of a "Buchanan Republican." Linder said that he, like Reagan, would find a "pony" inside a barn of manure, whereas the Buchanan point-of-view would be to blame someone for not cleaning out the barn.

The one-hour debate was carried over GA public TV and C-SPAN. I thought that Barr outperformed Linder. I would like to hear comments from others who may have seen the exchange. Barr seemed able to offer more in-depth answers, whereas Linder was more of a generalist. Linder claimed that Barr seeks the limelight, whereas he works "quietly and behind the scenes."

Barr endorsed Linder's proposed national sales tax to replace the income tax but then chided Linder for being able to convince only seven other congressman to join him in the push for the national sales tax.

Linder said in the exchange that he represents more than twice as many constitutents in the revamped 7th District as does Barr. He suggested that Barr should be running in another district, painting the outspoken former federal prosecutor as an interloper in the 7th District. The program also featured an ad showing Charlton Heston's strong support for Barr. The primary is August 20, and the winner is certain to hold the seat for the hard-pressed GA GOP in the fall.

Sounds like both of them have spent too much time with Jim Traficant.
That proposal reeks of corruption.

The only thing the great Bob Barr and Pat have in common is the fact that they're both patriots.

Politically, Pat is closer to Nader than Barr.

Here's an analogy somone gave me on the differences between all four presidential canidates in 2000. You have a car, and the engine is blown out. Gore would say raise taxes on the people who have cars, then offer a tax break for people who car pool so that you can go to work, this way gov't makes money and you somone will drive you, Nader would say, cars are evil, raise taxes on everyone who has a car, and we will use that to subsidize public transportation to take you to work (or lose your job, and we will raise taxes on everyone to support you on welfare and other public social programs),Buchanan would say "serves you right for buying a jap car, next time, I'll shoot you in the head you ever do that again, he would ban forign cars, and tell you to work in a american auto factory, and Bush, would give you a tax break so that you could buy a new engine or new car and call it a work expense since you need to go to work. I guess Forbes would just want a flat tax so that you could afford a new car on your own anyway.

You read it here first, folks.

And Willie, your beloved progressive income tax will be cast upon the ash heap of history! However, after the NRST becomes the law of the land, you and you followers can continue to pay income taxes if you so desire!

The rest of us will rejoice and enjoy our new found FReedoms, Liberties and economic prosperity!

“I have sworn upon the altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man.” [Thomas Jefferson, letter to Benjamin Rush, 1800.]

David Schippers described Bob Barr as "a hero" for his work during the Impeachment trial.

For his courage there alone, the man deserves re-election.

One of the seven was Gary Condit and the other "sales tax" bill is was the Tauzin/Traficant bill....a couple of real winners there...One's gone to prison the other should.

Correct me if I'm wrong but much of what Reagan said was actually written by Buchanan.

I would support Bob Barr's election compaign even if the NYT photographed him in drag lying in a skid-row gutter. That guy was a tremendous festering thorn in the side of the Krinton White House and, in my opinion, he deserves the support of anyone that loves the Republic - even if he is a initiate of the tin foil brigade.

You're wrong, Buchanan was a speechwriter for Richard Nixon, as was William Safire.

Buchanan ran the Communication Dept. during the early Reagan years, and hired the likes of Peggy Noonan. So, while he wasn't a "Reagan Speechwriter," he was the writers' boss.

I generally agree with your posts but we part company on this one. I'm strongly in favor of a national sales tax. It makes tax evasion far more difficult and greatly shrinks the IRS.

Seems like Linder is already well-skilled at shoveling manure...
